Vampire Progenitor System

Chapter 367: Gathering Strength

  • Next Chapter

The initial draft of the division list was completed before the twin moons reached their apogee.

Lucifer stood poised over the glowing projection table in the command hall with Lucian, Aeloria and Nyx as the names settled into two clear divisions. One set held the realms. The other would return to the hidden sector and attempt to break the enclave free. All appeared neat and orderly on the digital parchment but in practice the division was already causing friction.

Zane stood leaning against the edge of the table with his arms crossed, red eyes scanning the opposing columns. "You are taking Heron, Anita, me and a heavy Origin support line. That alone strips a significant portion of the Clan’s highest output from the capital and if the next pressure spike hits while we are gone Lucian will be standing in the Vampire Realm with a thinner wall than either of us are comfortable with."

Lucian did not disagree as his shadows remained still against the boots of his onyx armor. "I can hold the capital. I cannot promise I can hold it and respond to a second crisis within another of the realms at the same time. If you draw too many names into the breach team, the defense side takes on the status of a single point of failure."

Nyx’s living darkness slid along the floor near the table. "Then the defense side will have to work with what remains. The enclave will not open for a weak team. We have already seen the measuring constructs adapt. The final walls will be worse. A breach force assembled from the remnants will only die in the outer sector, giving the harvest more time."

Aeloria kept her gaze on the list. "We need at least one more high-output presence from outside of the Origin Clan. The new progenitors are still unstable but some of them have enough settled strength to matter. If even two of them join the breach team, the balance will change."

Lucifer nodded once. "Then we ask them. Not as an order, but as a choice. They already feel the drag from the siphon. They know what will happen if the orb reaches threshold."

The first meeting was held in an underground chamber beneath the Origin Palace.

Rhazor arrived with the heat still clinging to his scales and the focused aggression of a progenitor who had already paid for one invasion in blood. Remu came next, the witch-script beneath her skin calmer than it had been but marked with the ongoing tug from the other side of her seat. Dera was last, quiet and steady and carrying the weight of the Human seat with less obvious strain than the others.

Lucifer gave no preamble to the meeting, telling them plainly what the team had seen within the enclave, what the being had said and how close the harvest was to completion. He told them that the breach force would need support that could withstand the final barriers and told them how much the risks to their own realms would be during the time away.

The chamber was silent for a long moment before Rhazor spoke, his voice low and rough. "You are asking me to leave the Dragon Realm after it has already lost half its strongest fighters to Selene. If another attack comes while I am away, the seat I have just claimed will be standing on broken legs."

"I am asking you to help cut the process that is already pulling on every inherited seat," Lucifer replied, his voice even. "Including yours. The drag will not be limited to Remu. The longer the siphon runs, the more of you will feel it. If the orb finishes, the walls surrounding your realm will not be enough."

Remu’s hands curled against the edge of the table and the residual script along her forearms flickered once. "I can still feel the pull. It is quieter since you anchored me, but it is not gone. If that thing reaches threshold, I do not know how much of this seat will still be mine. I will go. Staying behind and waiting for the drain to finish it is not an option."

Dera looked between them and at Lucifer. "The human territories are quieter than the others, but they are not safe. If I leave, I leave them under secondary command. I can accept that risk if the breach team is actually strong enough to reach the chains. I will not accept it for a gesture. If we go, we go to break something, not to take another look and retreat."

Rhazor’s molten gold eyes remained fixed on Lucifer. Heat rolled off his shoulders in a slow wave. "You already took the measure of the outer defenses. You know the next wall will cost blood. If I join, I am not joining as a spare body. I will need a clear place in the line and a clear target when we reach the orb."

"You will have both," Lucifer said. "We are not assembling this team to stand near the enclave and hope. We are assembling it to force entry and cut the siphon before the counting finishes."

Rhazor was silent for another stretch of breath, then gave a short, sharp nod. "Then the Dragon seat is in. My realm will hate the gap I leave behind. They will hate the harvest more if it completes."

By the time the twin moons began their descent, the breach list had taken on a solidity.

Lucifer, Aeloria and Nyx formed the core while Heron, Zane and Anita anchored the Origin strength. Rhazor, Remu and Dera represented the weight of three settled seats and a small line of high-output support filled in the remaining gaps. On the division facing the outer sector, Lucian held the Vampire Realm with the rest of the Clan and the defensive lattice drawn as tight as it could go.

Not everyone was satisfied.

In the command hall after the final names had been secured, Zane looked over the completed division one final time and shook his head. "It is still a gamble. If the being leans on the realms the way it did before, Lucian will feel the missing weight immediately."

Lucian stood with his arms crossed, shadows quiet but dense. "Then I will hold until I cannot. After that, you will receive a recall signal regardless of the status of the enclave. Do not make me use it."

Aeloria closed the last of the projection layers. "The team is as strong as we can make it without stripping the realms bare. Any further delay only feeds the orb. We move as soon as the final preparations are complete."

Nyx’s black eyes reflected the fading light of the table. "Good. I am tired of watching a pulse count out the end of this place while we argue about how many walls we can still afford to staff."

Lucifer looked over the locked list one last time. The names on it were not a guarantee, but a decision. The harvest was still running and the chains were still holding and for the first time since the enclave had been discovered, the sealed universe was building real strength into the force that would reach it.

"Preparation ends soon," he said. "After that, we return into the dark and do not turn around until the siphon is cut or we are no longer able to keep walking."

No one in the hall argued with the shape of that ending.

Outside, the metronome pulse continued its steady work.

Within, the breach team had finally been gathered.
