Vampire Progenitor System

Chapter 366: Return and Division

The return from the hidden sector pulled on longer than the passage in.

There was no chatter in the wake of the blind silence that remained sealed behind. The metronome pulse carried on as if meeting with the higher being had never been the reason for such a meeting. Lucifer led them through the outer layers in careful stillness. Nyx kept herself to her darkness. Aeloria had the rear lined in the same tight concentration that had been used to force the gap. Heron and the two Origin operatives watched for the second wave that never came.

When the weight of the outer lattices of the Vampire Realm finally caged them in, the distance felt less empty. The monitoring sites took them at once.

Lucian was waiting on the outer observation platform when they landed. Zane and Anita had been with him and when Lucian saw their features upon landing, he was not surprised to know the expedition had more to return with.

"You reached something," Lucian said.

Lucifer gave a single nod and stepped onto the platform proper. "We reached the edge of the enclave. We forced a window. We saw the harvest."

Lucifer did not put a mask on whatever he reported. He told them what the enclave looked like, how the old progenitors were being chained at the edges of the orb, how the authority was being siphoned away from them in measured amounts, and how the being leading the process had drawn forth to make its declaration. He told them Damaris and Lilith were still alive. He told them the being had worked his growth into it’s plans for retrieving something it knew as Father. He told them the harvest had reached closer to completion than any of them had considered wanting it to reach.

When he finished, the platform was empty save for the distance carrying the repeating pulse of the metronome.

Zane was the first to clear it. His red eyes remained fixed on Lucifer. "So the clock is real, the prisoners are real, and the thing keeping them already thinks your power adds to its material list. That is a hard report to like."

Anita’s blood ribbons drifted in tight, uneasy coils. "If the drag on the new seats is in the same siphon, each cycle of that pulse is hurting the replacements as well as the originals. We cannot afford to treat the enclave as a far off problem anymore."

Lucian’s shadows moved slowly around his boots. "What do you need?"

"Division of strength," Lucifer said. "We cannot empty the realms and throw everything at the enclave at once. If we do, the next pressure spike will break through while we are gone. At the same time, we cannot keep standing on the walls and pretending the harvest will wait for us to feel ready. We split the board. One part holds the realms. The other part prepares for a real breach."

Aeloria stepped forward. The tension of holding the gap before still lingered in the tightness around her eyes, but her voice was clear. "The breach team will need high-output fighters that can survive contact with the final barriers. The defense side will need enough command strength to hold the major seats from collapsing under another coordinated test. If we get the split wrong, we lose on both fronts."

Nyx’s living darkness curled along the edges of the platform. "Then we stop arguing about whether the risk is a good enough one. The being has already declared the outcome it expects. The only answer is to be faster than its schedule. Lucifer, Lucian, and I can mark the first division of names today. Aeloria can correct it when she has finished measuring how much of her own strength she can risk outside the starfire seals."

Lucian looked from Nyx to Lucifer. "You are asking me to hold the realms with fewer of our stronger pieces on the board."

"I am asking you to hold them long enough for us to cut the siphon," Lucifer replied. "If the orb hits threshold, the walls will not matter. Whatever it is they are trying to retrieve will not care how well we reinforced the outer districts."

The weight of that settled over them. No one liked it. No one could deny it clean.

Zane exhaled out his nose and rolled one shoulder. "Then we start the list. Who stays. Who goes. Who can be shifted between the two sides if the situation turns. The longer we stand here reiterating how awful the clock is, the more cycles of it that complete."

Anita already had a thin blood construct drawn up above her palm, ready to take names and assignments. "We do it in layers. First layer: non-negotiable defense. Second layer: breach candidates. Third layer: reserves who can swing either way. We keep the new progenitors protected as much as possible. Most of them are still too unstable to get tossed into a direct assault on the enclave."

Heron spoke for the first time since returning. "I go with the breach team. The measuring constructs adapted to standard force. They will adapt again. You will need someone who can change inside the fight."

Lucifer met the empty eyes of the Draugr and gave a short nod. "You are on the list."

Aeloria cast their gazes out to the distance of the hidden sector. "We begin the division now. By the time the next full day ends, I want both versions of the teams locked. After that, we prepare for contact with the final walls. No more reconnaissance runs. The next crossing is for entry."

Lucifer looked once more at the people on the platform. Lucian, Zane, Anita, Heron, Aeloria, Nyx. He could see the personal weight of Damaris and Lilith’s situation sitting alongside the necessity of protecting the realms.

"Then we divide the board," he said. "And we do it with understanding that each name we move carries a cost. I will not pretend otherwise."

The metronome pulse sounded again across the outer lattices, patient and steady.

Inside the Vampire Realm, the work to split the strength between defense and assault had begun. Outside, the harvest continued as on the same schedule the being had refused to change.

The return was over.

The division had begun.
