Vampire Progenitor System
Chapter 360: Cracks in the New Seats
The decision to find the source of the harvest did not put the room at ease. It changed the tension that had filled the room.
Lucifer stood at the outer observation platform long after the others had begun to move. Lucian had left already to lay the first orders down – half the ready forces to reinforce the major realms, the other half to prepare for a controlled search beyond the known boundaries. Zane and Anita stayed long enough to lock in the current pulse data into the monitoring lattice before following. Heron disappeared into the deeper corridors without a word.
Aeloria stood beside Lucifer, her attention half on the repeating signal. Nyx had moved to the edge of the platform and was looking out into the dark beyond the seals as if she could already see the path they would have to take.
"You understand what this means for the new seats," Aeloria said quietly. "The moment you pull strong fighters away from the realms, every incomplete progenitor becomes a softer target. The metronome may be a timing tool, but it also acts as a distraction. Whatever is running the harvest will expect us to look outward."
Lucifer did not disagree. "Then we do not leave them unguarded. We take only what we need for the search and keep enough in place to respond to a second strike. I am not repeating the mistake of letting another seat get hit while we are busy looking elsewhere."
Nyx spoke without turning. "Good intention. Reality will test it soon enough."
She was right.
The first sign of trouble did not come from the outer boundary or the metronome pulse. It came from within the sealed universe.
A sharp, unstable spike of authority flared across the monitoring lattice less than an hour later. It was not an attack from outside. It was a progenitor seat fluctuating so hard it was picked up by all major sensors in range.
Lucifer felt it at the same time the alarms changed tone. The signature was familiar.
Remu.
The new Witch Progenitor’s authority was fluctuating wildly, spiking and collapsing in irregular waves that had nothing to do with normal growth or training. One moment the residual trace of her seat felt nearly steady and the next it was so thin that for a breath, it seemed ready to tear away from her entirely.
Lucian’s voice came through the emergency channel a moment later, tight and controlled. "We are getting the same reading from three different stations. Remu’s seat is destabilizing. The witch territories are already reporting secondary ward failures around her position. If it continues, she may lose the authority entirely or it may tear her apart trying to stay rooted."
Aeloria’s expression darkened. "That should not be possible this soon. A newly transferred seat can be unstable, but not at this level unless something is actively pulling at the other end of the connection."
Nyx’s living darkness coiled tighter around her shoulders. "The harvest. The old witch seat was one of the ones taken. If the siphon is still drawing on the residual structure of that seat, the new vessel can feel the drag. Remu is not only carrying a new authority, she is carrying one that is still being drained from the other side."
Lucifer was already moving towards the platform exit. "Where is she now?"
"Still in the witch territories," Lucian answered. "Local forces are trying to contain the fluctuations, but they are not equipped to handle a seat-level collapse. If you are going, go soon. The swings are getting wider."
Lucifer glanced at Aeloria and Nyx. "The search for the harvest source stays in motion. I am not shelving it. But I am not leaving her to be pulled apart by a drain she cannot even see. I will stabilize her first."
Aeloria gave a short nod. "Go. Nyx and I will keep mapping the metronome’s deeper structure while you handle the immediate crack. If the same drag begins showing in the other new seats, we will know the harvest is accelerating."
Nyx finally turned her black eyes towards him. "Do not take too long. Every cycle of that pulse is still counting. Saving one seat means nothing if the orb finishes before we reach it."
"I know," Lucifer said.
He left the platform at speed, space folding around him as he locked on to the unstable signature of the witch territories. Behind him, the metronome pulse continued its steady, patient rhythm, still marking progress on a harvest that had already begun to damage the replacements.
The witch territories smelled of scorched wards and overloaded crystal when Lucifer arrived.
Broken floating platforms drifted at uneven heights. Several of the older divination towers had cracked down their sides, leaking thin streams of residual magic into the air. In the center of the damage, in a wide courtyard of black stone, Remu was on her knees.
Dark witch-script crawled under her skin in irregular patterns, flaring bright one moment and nearly vanishing the next. Her breath came in hard, uneven pulls. Two of her remaining attendants tried to hold containment wards around her, but the wards kept shattering under the pressure of the fluctuating seat.
Remu looked up as Lucifer landed. Her eyes were bloodshot and too bright. "It feels like something is pulling from the other side of me," she said, voice strained but still clear. "Like the authority is rooted in my body, but the other end of it is being dragged somewhere I cannot reach. Every time I try to stabilize it, the drag gets worse."
Lucifer crossed the courtyard and dropped to one knee in front of her. He could feel the truth of her words in the structure of the seat itself. The Witch authority had accepted her as its new vessel, but a thin, persistent current was still flowing outward from her towards some distant point – towards the harvest and the orb that was feeding on the old generation.
"Hold still," he said. "I am going to anchor the seat from this side. It will not stop the drain completely, but it should stop it from tearing you apart while we work on the real source."
Remu gave a short, broken laugh that turned into a hiss of pain as another fluctuation ripped through her. "Please do it quickly. I can feel the edges of myself starting to fray."
Lucifer placed both hands on her shoulders and let his True Divine authority sink into the unstable lattice of the Witch seat. The drag from the far end of the connection fought him at once, cold and steady and uninterested in her survival. He did not try to cut it. He did not yet know where it led. Instead, he reinforced the local root of the authority, wrapping Remu’s claim in denser layers of power until the worst of the swings began to settle.
It took longer than he wanted. By the time the fluctuations dropped to a manageable level, Remu was shaking with exhaustion and the courtyard around them was scored with fresh cracks from the residual force.
She lifted her head slowly. The script under her skin had calmed to a dull glow. "That is better. Not gone. But better. Whatever is on the other end of this connection is still pulling. I can feel it like a second heartbeat that does not belong to me."
Lucifer rose to his feet. The metronome pulse was still faintly detectable even here, far from the outer boundary, a distant reminder that the harvest had not paused for any of them.
"The pull is coming from the same place that took the old progenitors," he said. "We are going after it. Until then, you do not stay alone. I will leave a support detail here to help you hold the seat stable. If the drag gets worse again, you signal at once."
Remu nodded once, still kneeling but no longer on the edge of collapse. "I will hold. Just find the other end of this and cut it. I did not ask for this seat so I could be used as a feeding tube for whatever is eating the old generation."
Lucifer looked at her for a moment longer, then turned his attention outward again. One seat had cracked and been temporarily reinforced. The others remained at risk. The pulse was still counting. And the real source of the drain was still out of reach.
The board had just made the cost of waiting clear.
