Vampire Progenitor System

Chapter 359: The Metronome’s Purpose

  • Next Chapter

The repeating pulse had not ceased since dawn.

Lucifer stood at the outer observation platform and counted the forty plus cycles the signal had already completed when he arrived. Each one followed the same pattern, the same weight, and the same determination to refuse concealment. It did not seek to breach any limitations, only to dictate a rhythm that every monitoring station in the Vampire Realm was forced to continue watching.

Lucian stood over the main projection table with Zane and Anita. Heron waited near the edge of the surface, silent as ever. Aeloria and Nyx arrived just before Lucifer, already focused on the information streams feeding in from the outer lattice structures.

Lucifer paused at the edge of the table and watched another cycle repeat. The low, steady note of the pulse resonated within the projected image.

’ It is not attacking ,’

Lucian said, his shadows writhing against the base of the table, ’We have reinforced the secondary barriers, pulled the outer patrols inward. Something has attempted to force its way through, but it simply... counts.’

Zane folded his arms and glared at the pattern of light within the projection. ’Counting implies there is an end, or a number it intends to reach before it does something more direct. Either way, a polite weapon is not an acceptable risk.’

Anita’s blood ribbons coiled slowly against her shoulders. ’Polite is not the word I would use. This thing is not interested in us at all. It serves some purpose, and we are an annoyance it refuses to acknowledge.’

Lucifer’s gaze shifted to Aeloria. ’You and Nyx have had the longest exposure to the residual structure. What is it doing?’

Aeloria did not take her gaze off the image in the projection. Silver strands of her hair caught the light as she said, ’It is not a weapon, certainly not in the traditional sense. It is a synchronizing lock, the pulse is keyed to some external process. Every time it completes a cycle, it allows whatever is on the receiving end to advance in measured increments. The presence of the signal itself is an accommodation to facilitate that transfer.’

Nyx’s living shadow undulated against her skin. ’In layman’s terms, it is an oscillator keeping a steady beat. There is something being fed or bled from something else in consistent quantities and this pulse is the metronome regulating the flow. Their open transmission of it suggests they either believe we can ignore it entirely, or they want our attention on the sound while the actual process occurs in some location we do not yet know about.’

Lucian drew his jaw tight. ’So we have options. We can assume it is a feint and trace whatever force is feeding this pulse to find the true source of the attack, or we can assume it is a prelude to an assault and reinforce our defenses in preparation for when the counting stops.’

’Both ,’

Lucifer said, his voice as evenly measured as the pulse repeating across the platforms. He felt the weight of it in his chest, the certainty pressing outward against the space between them. ’If this has any connection to the forces that captured the progenitors, we do not have the luxury of choosing one over the other. To ignore it would be as reckless as advancing against the outer boundary without understanding where or what we are confronting.’

Zane exhaled sharply. ’You are suggesting we devote resources to both. We maintain the perimeter, but begin tracing this pulse to its source.’

’Yes, ’ Lucifer said. He watched Aeloria as she finally turned her full attention to him. ’The risk is obvious. If you remove enough elements at the heart of the realms to investigate this, without establishing the true nature of the threat, then the next hunting force will find easy acquisition in the exposed seats.’

Nyx curled her lips into a humorless smile. ’If you do not investigate, the pulse will continue until the process on the receiving end is complete. Judging by the strength of the signal, that should not be assumed to be a small thing. You can defend these seats with every available asset and still fail because whatever is being constructed will reach completion on schedule.’

For several moments an uncomfortable stillness settled over those gathered as the pulse repeated, ignoring their concerns. It was Heron who finally spoke, his voice as carefully composed as it always was.

’The signal is not random, against the known parameters of the residual drains we witnessed with the old progenitors, if we can predict where the intervals fall we may be able to determine a correlation.’

Anita glanced at him, then back at the projection. ’You are suggesting if this particular rate matches the speed at which we saw the captured authorities being withdrawn when the progenitors’ vanished...’

’...that would give us the approximate velocity with which they must be advancing, ’ Heron said. ’Their pulse, their drain, are all increments of regularity.’

Lucifer looked at Aeloria and Nyx. ’Can you prove that?’

Aeloria was already manipulating the flows of information around the table, drawing up the oldest projections of the residual structures that remained after the old progenitors had first vanished. Nyx worked the shadows into the streams of data to build another comparison. It only took a fraction of a cycle for her to stop and narrow in on something specific.

Aeloria turned toward Lucifer, her expression tightening. ’The intervals match, very closely. Against the limited data we had available from around the time of the last major drain, every cycle of this pulse fits within the parameters of measured frequency at which captured authorities have been withdrawn.’

Nyx’s black eyes darkened. ’Which means every time one of those pulses has sounded, the old progenitors have been bled of another fraction of their essence, and whatever it is that feeds upon them has grown stronger.’

Lucian’s shadows had stilled against the base of the table. ’Then we are measuring something against a clock, but we do not know how much time remains.’

Lucifer turned and watched another pulse complete its measured cycle. He could hear the weight of it in the sound it made.

’Then they stop pretending it is a warning and we find the source of the drain, ’ Lucifer said. ’Before the counting stops.’

Aeloria met his gaze. ’That is going to require looking into every exposed boundary we have.’

’I know ,’ Lucifer said. ’But it would not be very satisfying to simply raise these walls and retreat behind them knowing it is only delaying the inevitable. I am tired of delaying inevitability without control.’

The pulse resonated low against the platforms once more and, for the first time, everyone in the room heard the sound for what it truly was.

Not a threat of confrontation.

But a note of progression. And it was counting.
