Chapter 352: End of the Debt

  • Next Chapter

Selene shoved herself off the cracked crater wall using both hands and starlight fluid still ran down her chin. The fused core in her chest worked hard to make sure she remained standing, but with each pulse it held more weight. Lucifer’s pressure pressed heavily on her like a second gravity, making it nearly impossible to properly breathe.

One final attempt.

Erasure gathered along her right arm in tight, desperate lance while termination energy coiled along her left. Both were thrown his way, aimed at the center of his chest to at least force him back and hopefully provide the room she needed to carve a path out of the caldera. The techniques left her hands clean and fast.

Lucifer did not move back.

His shadows rose in a wall to meet the erasure head on. At the same time a blood construct took shape across his forearm to intercept the termination strike, dispersing it with a hard pulse of True Divine authority. The remaining force only kicked around broken stone and hot dust around his feet. He continued to move forward through it, crimson eyes fixed on her with no hurry.

"You already know this is over," Lucifer stated calmly, his voice easily picked up over the ruined platform. "Your core is burning through what little you have left just to keep yourself on your feet. Each technique you throw is weaker than the one before it. I can feel it. Rhazor can feel it. Even your own body sees the same thing. Coming down is better than forcing me to finish this the hard way."

Selene spat starlight fluid to the side and pulled a broken laugh from her throat. "Standing down? After everything? Korrath tore his own core out and fed it to me to live. Your people made him do that. I did not come to all this just burn the wolf ranges and pick a fight with a prepared dragon seat just to raise my hands and walk away because the hybrid saw fit to arrive stronger than expected. If this is where the debt ends, then it ends with me still swinging."

She launched herself at him.

Rhazor moved at the same time from the left, dragon fire wrapped both fists, while Varkas and Syla closed the angles to ensure she did not slip past. Selene slipped under Rhazor’s first swing by instinct, trying to plant a termination palm against Lucifer’s ribs. She never made contact. Shadows wrapped around her wrist mid-strike and slammed her down into the basalt hard enough to crack the stone again. Air burst from her lungs. The fused core stuttered.

Lucifer kept his knee on her upper back, not in anger but with the clean weight of one that had already made their decision. Blood constructs hovered near her neck and spine, ready but not yet driven in.

"You should have stopped after the wolves," he said now quieter. "Or you should have come straight for me at the start. Hunting the new seats only prolonged this and made it bloodier than need be. Korrath made his choice. You did not have to turn the whole board into payment for it."

Selene’s white-fire eyes burned up at him from the broken stone. For a moment the rage remained, but underneath it a more weary and honest look came through. "Easy words from the one that grew stronger in safety while the rest of us were already in the fire. You think I wanted this iteration of the debt? Of course I wanted them to feel the same hole he left. If the only way to do that was to cut down the pillars they cared about, then that is how I took. I am not going to pretend it was clean. I am also not going to apologize for it while I still have breath."

Rhazor stood a few paces away, chest still marked by previous wounds, molten gold eyes hard. "She has said enough. My people are lying across this caldera because of her. End it."

Aeloria’s voice reached the trio from the sealed edge of the battlefield. "Do it cleanly. No drawn out punishment. She is already beaten."

Nyx only watched with living darkness quiet around her shoulders, offering no argument to either side.

Lucifer looked down at Selene for a long second before the pressure of his authority did not lessen. At the time of his movement, it was without wasted motion. The blood constructs drove forward in a single, precise sequence aimed to end the support of the fused core and the body that housed it. Selene tried to erase the attack in one final reflex. The True Divine edge on the constructs simply overpowered the attempt.

The light in her white-fire eyes went out.

The fused core flared once, violently before breaking apart into scattered residual energy that floated across the broken basalt before fading. Selene’s body stilled under Lucifer’s hand. The constant, grating pressure of her presence was gone from the caldera as if someone had cut a string.

For a moment the only sounds left were the low crackle of the leftover fires and a rough breathing of the dragonkin still standing.

Lucifer rose slowly, shadows and blood constructs dissolving around him. He looked at what remained of Selene for a short time before turning his attention to the Rhazor and survivors.

"It is finished," he said. "She will not touch another seat."

Rhazor gave a single heavy nod, still watching the place where Selene had fallen. "My people will remember the cost. Make sure your side does too."

Aeloria and Nyx crossed the ruined platform to join the trio. Aeloria’s eyes moved over the dead and wounded dragonkin, then to Lucifer, measuring the fact he had finished it without hesitation once the decision was made. Nyx studied the fading traces of the broken core with a more clinical interest.

"She is gone," Nyx said. "Which removes one active hunter from the board. It also puts a very bright mark on you. Anything that has been watching this universe will have felt a core-bearing Reaver die under True Divine force. Whatever has been testing the outer edges will not consider it a small event."

Lucifer looked out past the crater rim toward the wider sealed universe. The burden of the kill now sat cleanly on his shoulders without celebration and without regret.

"I know," he said. "Let them feel it. I am done sitting behind the seals while people connected to me get hunted. If ending her paints a larger target on me, then the target was already coming anyway."

Around them the caldera remained filled with smoke, blood, and the quiet after a hard fight. Selene’s debt had been cut short. The wider consequences of its conclusion were only now starting to move.
