Vampire Progenitor System

Chapter 351: Caldera War

  • Next Chapter

The first outright fight between the three major powers ripped the center of the caldera asunder.

And Lucifer certainly didn’t hold back in the engagement, managing to send a layered cascade of True Divine authority into the volcanic air as soon as the stalemate ended. Thickened shadows stitched together into solid constructs while blood-forged blades emerged along both of his arms, the conceptual weight of the old Pseudo-Divine iteration not existing in the present version. He took the first sphere of erasure and termination that Selene threw at him dead-on and showed no movement to get out of the way.

Selene immediately sensed the change.

The fused core within her chest throbbed powerfully as she put more output into the sphere, trying to push the opponent back in turn the same way she had done to any and all previous adversaries. It didn’t last less than a second before the newly arrived pressure crushed the outer layers of the sphere and continued inwards. The woman had to break off the technique and evade sideways through a wall of her own erasure, narrowly avoiding the descending blood blade which carved a thick furrow through the basalt at the spot she had previously stood.

"You’ve changed," Selene observed as she reappeared some several meters to the side, white-fire lines dancing along her body. Her voice carried the sharp edge of someone recalculating everything they thought they knew on the fly. "The last time your people fought me, they used numbers and organization to make me work for the kill. And now you walk in here, swatting away techniques that could erase entire high ranking beasts from the face of the wolf ranges in one motion. How long were they keeping you sealed away, hybrid? How much did they pour into you while the rest of us bled?"

Lucifer continued to advance without replying straight away, shadows spreading before him in the widening domain which sought to pin her angles. And when the man chose to speak, the words were devoid of any hurry and carried the calm assurance of someone who didn’t need to prove anything with words.

"Long enough," the reply eventually came. "Long enough to stop thinking of every fight as a desperate climb. You came here thinking the new seats were still soft enough to be broken before anyone could organize a proper response. That option is no longer available, as you are not getting to collect your debt by cutting down people who were never even there when Korrath fell."

Rhazor took advantage of the conversation to close in from the opposite flank, the dragon fire beginning to gather around both of the scaled fists. "Less talking, more hitting. She’s already laid half my people flat. I am not in the mood to hear her explain why she gets to keep doing this while she stands on my stone."

He threw himself at Selene with the full force of the Dragon seat behind the charge. Said woman twisted, erasing the head of fire, and attempted to terminate the rest of the technique before it could strike. The effort didn’t fully succeed, the progenitor authority of Rhazor punching through the weakened erasure to clip her sharply across the shoulder and send a spray of starlight liquid into the hot air.

Selene skidded across the pitted platform, leaving shallow furrows in the stone before she came to a halt with a tighter set to her expression. The fused core had already begun compensating, repairing the greater part of the damage, but the ease with which she had been able to massacre the opponents in the earlier phases was no longer there. Lucifer’s overwhelming baseline and Rhazor’s territorial presence took a greater toll with every movement.

Varkas, still limping with the one ruined wing, opened up with covering heat lances from a higher ledge to constrict her withdrawal options. Syla and the remaining ranked fighters adjusted their formation to keep the flanks closed, no longer attempting to finish the opponents off but seeking to deny Selene the isolation she favored. Nyx’s darkness already sealed the upper rims of the crater. Aeloria held the periphery of the battlefield under absolute and silent control, making anything interfering with the engagement extremely difficult.

Selene’s white-fire eyes swept over the formation and returned to Lucifer. "You talk of debt as if you understood the concept. Korrath tore out his own core and shoved it into my hands so I would live. Your people, your Origin Clan, your Draugr and your carefully crafted weapons, forced that upon him. I am not here because I enjoy the sport of hunting new seats. I am here because someone has to answer for that, and the universe will not do it for me. And if the only language this place understands is the removal of pillars, I will keep removing them until the debt is paid in full."

Lucifer’s shadows gathered, denser blood constructs reappearing along his arms than before. When he chose to speak, there was no dramatic flair or increased volume in his voice, merely the certainty of the man who had already made up his mind.

"That the ledger stops with me," Lucifer replied. "You want someone to answer for Korrath? I am the answer. Not Ken, not the dragon seat, not whatever other isolated target you had in mind to break. One chance to stand down and leave this realm without me having to put you down hard enough that the fused core won’t reassemble you. And after that, I stop being restrained about it."

Selene let out a short, raw laugh. "Restrained. You arrive at a level that already makes my current output look like child’s play and you call this being restrained? Please. Show me what the sealed hybrid is like when he stops pretending to hold the edges."

She committed fully.

The fused core burned at its current peak, erasure and termination weaving together into a dense field which attempted to unmake everything at a widening radius from the woman’s center of gravity. Dragonkin on the closer ledges had to scatter or be unmade outright. Rhazor planted his feet and pushed back against the oncoming tide with all the strength of his seat and focused fire, his scales already cracking under the strain. Lucifer refused to retreat, stepping into the field and layering Umbral Throne and Blood Mandate together in a way that simply overwhelmed the technique.

The change in baselines was no longer on the level of noticeable shifts. What Selene could manage as her strongest sustained output simply bent and broke under the weight of the True Divine pressure. Lucifer’s follow-up strike impacted clean, a shadow reinforced blood construct slamming into her and sending the woman into the crater wall with enough force to leave a sizable impact crater in the stone. Starlight liquid sprayed across the rock, the white-fire veins along Selene’s body flickering erratically as the fused core fought to compensate.

Rhazor didn’t waste the opening, closing in with Varkas and Syla to pin angles while Lucifer kept the woman pinned with his own baseline pressure.

Selene hung onto the crumbled wall for a moment, gasping for breath as starlight liquid trickled from the corner of her mouth. Her white-fire eyes remained locked onto Lucifer, something in her expression no longer purely analytical.

"You really did surpass it," she murmured, voice rough. "Whatever they were turning you into within that sealed place, it managed to work. You’re not the same existence that left residual traces on the previous battles. You’re something the current board isn’t ready for."

Lucifer maintained the pressure, shadows and blood authority keeping her firmly in place while Rhazor’s people closed in. "Last chance. Stand down."

Selene’s response was the final push of the fused core, the effort not meant to win the exchange but create a single, lasting disruption large enough to carve out an escape. The entire caldera trembled at the attempt, and for the barest fraction of a second the layered seals Nyx and Aeloria had layered around the battlefield flickered.

It wasn’t enough.

Lucifer’s authority crushed the effort before it could fully manifest, and the opening closed.

The battle was no longer a matter of equals.

It was a question of how much longer Selene would last against a hybrid that had already surpassed her.
