Vampire Progenitor System

Chapter 349: Dragon Caldera

Rhazor stood on the top of the black basalt platform situated right at the center of the primary caldera, his scaled arms folded across the broad, still-warm chest, where the recent seat transfer still lingered in its aftereffects. Dark crimson scales ran down his jaw to his neck and forearms, growing thicker around the shoulders, where the Dragon authority had settled the most firmly. His eyes burned a steady molten gold. Around him the high-ranking dragonkin maintained their positions with the discipline that was less common for the forces with the less disciplined officers.

Varkas stood to the right, broad-winged and grey-scaled, the oldest among the surviving wing commanders, and the one who had managed to keep the outer perches organized while Rhazor finished the seat stabilizing. To his left, Syla kept low to the stone, her leaner frame clad in lighter bronze scales, with a long spear of the volcanic glass resting across her shoulders. Behind them the twin brothers Kaelith and Renn kept the high ledges, with the dozen other ranked fighters, their wings half-spread to dive at the command. They were not a formal army with banners and ranks borrowed from the other realms. They were Rhazor’s people – the survivors of the old dragon territories, who had accepted the new progenitor without hesitation once the seat chose him.

Selene descended into the superheated air above the caldera and stopped just beyond the range. The white-fire lines traced her starlight form. The fused core sat quiet and dense in her chest.

Rhazor was the first to speak, his voice cleanly cutting through the heat-haze. "You’re the one who hit the wolf ranges."

"Yess."

"You’re not walking out of here the same way."

Selene answered with movement.

She dropped into the caldera like a cutting blade. Erasure laced with termination carved a clean line towards the platform. Varkas intercepted first, wings snapping wide as he dropped from the right flank and met the oncoming strike with a wall of the compressed heat and scale. The clash lit the crater in harsh white and red. Selene’s power sheared through the outer layer of his defense and forced him back, but enough was enough for Syla to close from the opposite side, volcanic glass spear thrusting for Selene’s ribs.

Selene twisted, let the spear pass close enough to score a thin line of starlight fluid across her side, and answered with a short-range termination pulse that cracked the stone beneath Syla’s feet and sent her sideways. Rhazor was already moving.

The new Dragon Progenitor did not waste motion on roar or display. He closed the distance with the dense, grounded power of the seat fully accepted, a scaled fist carrying enough force to warp the air. Selene caught the blow on a layered shield of erasure and still slid several meters across the basalt, heels carving trenches. Heat followed the impact – dragon fire that tried to cling and burn through her defenses, rather than simply explode outward.

Kaelith and Renn dove from the high ledges, with the rest of the ranked fighters. Coordinated streams of fire and claw forced Selene to split her attention. She erased two of the diving forms completely and terminated a third mid-flight, but the survivors adjusted immediately, opening distance and cycling back into overlapping attack lanes. This was not the disorganized rush of the werewolf stronghold. Rhazor’s people fought like a single organism that had already decided it preferred to die in formation.

Selene’s white-fire eyes narrowed. The fused core pulsed harder. She stopped matching the broad exchanges and started cutting with precision. A narrow lance of pure termination punched through the Varkas’s left wing, sending the grey-scaled commander to spiral into the crater wall. Syla recovered and came again; Selene met the spear mid-thrust, erased the upper half of the weapon, and drove an open palm into Syla’s chest, hard enough to fold the bronze-scaled fighter into the stone.

Rhazor took the opening.

He hit Selene from the side with a full-commitment strike, that combined the raw progenitor strength and concentrated dragon fire. The impact drove her across platform and into the far crater wall, hard enough to spiderweb it, with starlight fluid spraying from her mouth. The fused core stuttered once, before stabilizing. Selene pushed herself out of the cratered stone, white-fire lines flickering, and wiped the fluid away with the back of her hand.

"Better," she said quietly.

She stopped holding back the full output of the core.

Erasure and termination expanded in a sudden, violent sphere that forced every remaining dragonkin to scatter or die. Two more ranked fighters vanished mid-dive. Kaelith took a glancing cut that opened his side to the bone and still tried to press the attack until Renn dragged him clear. Varkas, with his wing ruined, dragged himself into a defensive position near the platform, keeping firing controlled heat lances to restrict Selene’s angles.

Rhazor met her in the center of the caldera again. This time the exchange was pure attrition. Scaled fists against fused starlight. Dragon fire against erasure. Progenitor authority against the residual will of a Reaver who had already decided grief was best answered with bodies. Stone cracked. The air itself began to thin under the repeated collisions. Selene landed a termination-laced strike that opened a deep gouge across Rhazor’s chest and took the return blow that nearly collapsed her left side in exchange.

They separated by several meters, both breathing harder, both still standing.

Around them the surviving members of Rhazor’s people reformed as best they could – bloodied, reduced in numbers, but still in position. Syla had risen again, her spear gone, claws extended. Varkas held the high ground with one working wing. The twins and the remaining ranked fighters kept the flanks closed.

Selene’s white-fire gaze swept the formation once. The werewolf ranges had been a slaughter. This was a war of attrition she could still win, but not without paying for every meter.

A new pressure brushed the outer edge of the Dragon Realm.

Dense. Clean. True Divine at a baseline that registered even through the heat and violence of the caldera. Moving fast and directly towards them.

Rhazor felt it. Selene felt it. Every surviving dragonkin on the ledges felt it.

Lucifer’s unrestricted presence was coming.

Selene’s expression did not change, but the fused core pulsed once in cold recognition. Rhazor shifted his stance slightly, molten gold eyes tracking the same approaching signature, while still maintaining Selene in his primary field of view.

The fight was not over.

But the conditions of the fight had changed for everyone inside the caldera.
