Chapter 1949 - 1948: Ant Race Takes the Blame
Chapter 1949: Chapter 1948: Ant Race Takes the Blame
Yan Lie then dispatched his subordinates to search around, while setting up a new camp near the original one.
Just as Li Feng anticipated, after making these decisions, Yan Lie began to wait in place, without reporting upwards.
Because at this stage of gathering troops, they didn’t even know who to listen to, nor where to send the information.
Of course, the main reason is that this is the heart of the Barbaric, making it unimaginable for human cultivators to appear here and then flatten one of their camps.
So they could only rely on some known information to find the reason, such as beast tides, which are very common in the Southern Ten Thousand Mountains within the Demon Country. Every year, there are some beast tides in the mountains.
After all, the living space in the mountain is limited. Although the Demon Clan, like humans, are intelligent beings, the spiritual beasts and Xuan Beasts are not foolish. The stronger the spiritual beast, the higher its spiritual wisdom, sometimes not less than the Demon Clan and humans. However, spiritual beasts are scattered, each with its territory, rarely uniting.
But the expansion or sometimes enslavement of beasts by the Demon Clan can anger these overlords of the mountains, who would then launch a retaliatory beast tide.
So beast tides might be an unfamiliar term to Ancestor Dragon City, but to the Demon Clan, they are a commonplace event. The Demon Clan’s martial tendencies have even been honed from the waves of beast tide invasions.
A night passed like this.
Yan Lie’s subordinates, the Wolf Riders, naturally didn’t harvest much because Li Feng had cleaned up before leaving, burning all the corpses to prevent any trace from being identified, and then drove away the meat beasts and some mounts.
As for the traces left by Li Feng’s group riding the Horned Rhinoceros, there was no need to over-conceal. After all, many thousand-men teams had passed through this place, making it hard to link any marks with the previous day’s disaster.
"Any findings?"
"Reporting to the princely heir, last night, a scouting team discovered some gnawed bodies of kobolds in the forest, seemingly from a dispatched logging team. Additionally, numerous traces of fire were found in the woods."
"The scouts penetrated deeper and found a gap connecting to the Molten Lava Land. Although dangerous and arduous, it is indeed passable, making me suspect the Ant Race."
The Bei Clan think tank reported, though the received intelligence wasn’t entirely like this. Despite finding the gap, the traces in the forest weren’t significant enough to constitute a beast tide. Still, a beast tide might not only run on the ground; it could also fly in the sky.
So, fewer traces on the ground could be explained, and since that gap was extremely difficult to traverse, it’s plausible that the majority of the beast tide consisted of flying spiritual beasts, particularly the Ant Race’s Flying King Ant legion from Molten Lava Land.
"The Ant Race?"
Upon hearing this, Yan Lie indeed speculated towards the Ant Race. After all, the Ant Race, capable as they are, could achieve such feats. In the last major battle, they had followed the Vermilion Bird to fight against the Demon Country, leaving a deep impression with their legion.
Individually weak, yet forming massive legions, they are indeed a formidable opponent.
With the eruption of the Molten Lava Volcano, the Ant Race’s territory was the first to bear the brunt. In the absence of the Vermilion Bird, this force of the Ant Race has indeed become a source of chaos.
As for any mutual understanding between the Ant Race and the Demon Country, such matters wouldn’t be widely spread, and Yan Lie was unaware.
Linking everything to the Ant Race all of a sudden made perfect sense.
"If it’s the Ant Race, then they really are a trouble. The Ant Race’s legion is quite large, and if this trouble isn’t resolved, our Demon Country advancing to the First Line Pass might face attacks from all sides. If the back route is cut off...!"
Realizing this point, Yan Lie’s eyes coldly flickered.
"We shall camp here temporarily, notify the rear to be wary of sneak attacks, gather forces quickly towards me, and send a message back to the tribe to inform my father, letting him explain this to our Demon General."
"Perhaps before attacking the First Line Pass of Ancestor Dragon City, we might need to clear the rear first."
"Yes, princely heir."
Yan Lie stood with his hands behind his back, observing the Molten Lava Volcano shrouded within a field of volcanic clouds. The Half Border Mountain blocked most of the drifting volcanic ash, yet some still floated out.
Meanwhile, just as Yan Lie naturally pinned everything on the Ant Race, Bi Fang flew back.
"In that camp, only more than two hundred wolf riders came towards us, leaving those kobolds behind. Before this, two Demon Clan thousand-men teams continued north without getting involved."
"Only more than two hundred Wolf Riders came?"
"Really underestimated those kobolds." Li Feng scoffed. Although kobolds are among the inferior Demon Clan, their combat strength isn’t feeble. It just shows the arrogance of the Wolf Riders’ leader, completely disregarding the kobolds.
"Prepare for battle."
The Wolf Riders are light cavalry, moving swiftly. It barely took half an hour after Bi Fang’s report before they appeared in Li Feng’s sight.
No need for Li Feng to call out, when the Wolf Riders galloped past, the Personal Guard Camp, already ambushed underground, suddenly sprang up, lifting the cover from their bodies and directly attacking the bellies of the Wolf Riders jumping overhead.
Instantly, the Wolf Riders flipped over, with nearly half of the more than two hundred riders falling. Although the rest escaped disaster, with Lei Ba and others joining the fray, they immediately engaged in battle with the Wolf Riders.
Though not superior in numbers, they held their ground, especially having the advantage of a surprise attack.
Instantly, chaos engulfed the Wolf Riders.
Li Feng did not intervene directly, taking a position on the side as reinforcement.
"Human cultivators, tricked by those damned kobolds." The leading Wolf Clan leader, although arrogant, was somewhat knowledgeable. Seeing human cultivators attacking, though bewildered, he recognized the gravity of the situation.
"Flee, scatter, and then spread the information that human cultivators have infiltrated the Barbaric heartland."
With that, the Wolf Clan leader turned his mount and didn’t attempt to rescue fellow clansmen, leading the remaining mounted Wolf Riders to break through in one direction.
Unfortunately, they chose the wrong direction, heading straight towards Li Feng’s position.
Seeing a dozen Wolf Riders approaching, Li Feng directly hurled the Soul-breaking Needle. A chilling star flashed, and instantly the approaching Wolf Riders fell one after another.
By the time they reached Li Feng, only a few Wolf Riders remained. Li Feng sneered coldly, facing the oncoming lead Wolf Rider, unleashed a Hu Ben punch. Instantly, the flames transformed into a fierce tiger descending a mountain, pouncing upon the charging Wolf Rider with a roar.
Facing the nearly overwhelming momentum, the lead Wolf Rider’s pupils contracted, and in the next second, he was engulfed by the scarlet flames.
It’s said that wolves have iron bones and tofu waists, but under Li Feng’s punch, the wolf beneath the leader spewed fire from seven orifices.
The Wolf Rider leader barely escaped by leaping off the mount at the last moment.
"Who are you, daring to venture deep into the Barbaric Grassland? Now the grassland is swarming with our Demon Country forces, even if you take me down, you’re doomed with no way out."
Li Feng curled his lips, gazing at the opponent: "Who said I intend to flee? I’ll walk straight out in the open; let’s see which of your Demon Clan can stop me."
"Heh, such arrogance, now take my claw."
