Urban God of Rebate: Infinite Returns Of Women And Powers
Chapter 299: The Thread II
"Yes."
"The contacts you traced," he said. "The people who were asked about the photograph. Were any of them in the financial sector. Not the entertainment side. Finance."
A pause.
"The marketing person at the label," said Kwon slowly. "She mentioned something in passing. She said the person who called had asked about the label’s corporate structure first. Like they were establishing the label’s business context before moving to the talent question."
"Corporate structure," said Sean.
"She thought it was standard background research," said Kwon. "She said they knew specific things about the label’s parent company that you’d have to look up."
"Or already know," said Sean.
A longer pause.
"You think it’s the same person," said Kwon.
"I think it might be the same investigation," said Sean. "Not the photograph specifically and the financial questions specifically. One investigation that’s building a picture from multiple angles simultaneously."
Kwon was quiet for a moment.
"That’s a more serious situation than I modeled," he said.
"Yes," said Sean.
"What do we do," said Kwon.
"Nothing yet," said Sean. "I need to understand what they have before I decide how to respond. Moving before that is how you confirm the things they’re still trying to confirm."
"I can hold for now," said Kwon. "But Sean. Olivia is going to find out. Not from me. From Yuna or Sori or someone in the building who notices I’m having more phone calls than usual."
"Let me tell her," said Sean.
"When," said Kwon.
He thought about it.
"Thursday evening," he said. "After the Fischer call. I’ll know more by then."
"Thursday," said Kwon. "Alright." He paused. "She’s going to want to be useful. It’s how she handles things."
"I know," said Sean.
"Don’t let her try to manage it herself," said Kwon. "She’ll want to call someone or release a statement or make it simpler than it is."
"I’ll handle her," said Sean.
"I know you will," said Kwon. And then with the specific warmth he kept mostly hidden: "That’s why I called you first."
The call ended.
Sean sat at his desk.
He had the board call prep document. The cap table revision. The Thomas Reeve question. The Fischer call Thursday. Clara’s twelve days. Amara’s forty-one slides and the eighth question getting closer. Mia at thirty-one minutes and probably already at twenty-five.
And underneath all of it, two parallel threads that might be one thread, moving toward something he couldn’t fully see yet.
He texted Max.
The financial inquiries and the photograph situation. Is there any possibility they’re connected. Same source, different angles.
Max replied in six minutes. I’ve been sitting with that question since your call. The methodology overlap is significant enough that I can’t rule it out. Give me until tomorrow.
Tomorrow, said Sean.
He picked up his coffee.
Cold now. He’d been on calls long enough that the coffee had gone cold, which happened on days with too many things in them.
He went to the campus café.
Bought another.
[8 dollars spent]
[Balance: $68,760,603]
[16 dollars received — 2x baseline]
[New Balance: $68,760,619]
He sat at a corner table and thought about a professional financial investigator who was good enough to be invisible and careful enough to use third-party contacts and thorough enough to build a picture from multiple angles.
And then he thought about the photograph.
Lobby of the Reine Hotel. Taken from outside through the glass. Telephoto lens. Someone who had known where to be and when.
’That requires specific information,’ he thought. ’Not general surveillance. Someone told them about the Reine specifically.’
He thought about who knew about the Reine.
Olivia. Kwon. James. The hotel itself.
And anyone who had been watching closely enough in the weeks after the showcase.
He pulled out his phone.
He texted James.
The evening of the showcase. After Olivia’s performance. When we went to the Reine. Were we followed.
James replied in under a minute.
I’ve been reviewing that evening since Kwon’s call sir. There was a car that maintained consistent distance from us between the venue and the hotel. I noted it at the time as a possibility and then lost it in traffic. I should have flagged it.
You’re flagging it now, said Sean. That’s what matters. Can you describe the car.
Dark blue sedan. I didn’t get the plate clearly. Midsize, recent model.
That’s enough for now, said Sean. Thank you James.
Of course sir, said James. I’m sorry I didn’t say something sooner.
You’re saying something now, said Sean.
He put his phone in his pocket and looked at the campus moving around him.
Someone had followed them from the showcase.
That was months ago.
Which meant this investigation had been building for longer than two weeks.
Which meant whoever had commissioned it had been patient enough to build slowly.
That told him something specific about who he was dealing with.
Patient. Well-resourced. Professionally executed. Building from multiple angles simultaneously.
He thought about who in his life that description applied to.
He came up with three names.
One of them he was going to have to take seriously.
He took out his phone and opened a new note.
He wrote the three names.
He looked at them.
Then he put his phone away and finished his coffee and went back to his desk and picked up Clara’s board call prep document and read it from the beginning, properly, the way she’d written it to be read.
The board call was tomorrow.
The Fischer call was Thursday.
Everything else could be held until he had more of the picture.
He’d built enough things carefully enough to know that moving before the picture was complete was how careful things fell apart.
He read.
==================
Three miles away Isabelle Crane was on the phone.
"The university faculty contact," she said. "He confirmed the lecture series invitation. He said Miller declined politely and specifically. Not a brush-off. A considered no."
"Meaning what," said the voice.
"Meaning he doesn’t want attention," said Isabelle. "He’s been building visible positions in public markets while simultaneously keeping his personal profile as low as possible. That’s a deliberate balance." She paused. "Most eighteen year olds with this kind of money lean into it. He’s doing the opposite."
