Urban God of Rebate: Infinite Returns Of Women And Powers
Chapter 298: The Thread
A brief pause at the shift in subject. Then Max’s voice changed slightly, the warmth that appeared when his sister was the topic. "She made me review her slides last night. Forty-one of them. She had notes on how I should give feedback. Written notes. About how to review her slides."
"Instructions for the audience," said Sean.
"Detailed instructions," said Max. "Font size, pacing, the specific things she wanted me to focus on." A pause. "Slide thirty-seven is the strongest thing I’ve seen her build. The policy gap she identified in the hospital data pipeline. She mapped it onto three other healthcare adjacent systems where the same gap exists and nobody has flagged it yet."
"The oversight body is going to have a long meeting," said Sean.
"Three weeks from Wednesday," said Max. "She’s already planning what she wears." Another pause. "She also asked me to tell you something."
"What," said Sean.
"She said the eighth question is getting closer to being asked," said Max. "I don’t know what that means. She didn’t explain it and when I asked she reorganized my coffee mugs."
Sean looked at the window.
"Tell her I’m ready when she is," he said.
"I’ll tell her," said Max. "She’ll reorganize something else in response."
The call ended.

Clara’s board call prep document was eight pages.
Sean read it properly, not the skim version, the actual read, and by page four he was already thinking about the Thomas Reeve question and whether Fischer’s introduction of the second investor was something that needed to be addressed directly or read carefully across the Thursday call first.
His phone buzzed at nine thirty.
Clara.
Not a call. A text, which meant she had something specific and had decided a text was more efficient than a call for this one piece of information.
Thomas Reeve. I found someone who worked with him directly at the Meridian acquisition company. She left the company a year after the acquisition. Voluntarily she says. She agreed to speak to me informally this morning.
What did she say, he replied.
She said Reeve resigned because of the post-acquisition integration approach. She said Meridian’s team came in and stripped the operational structure in a way that wasn’t what the acquisition terms implied. She said Reeve was vocal about it internally and was told his concerns were noted and should stop being expressed.
So he resigned rather than stay quiet, said Sean.
Yes, said Clara. Which tells you something specific about who he is.
It tells you he’s someone who left a comfortable advisory role because something was wrong, said Sean. That’s the second reason not the first.
The second reason is better for us, said Clara.
Yes, said Sean. It is.
A pause.
Sean, she said.
Yeah.
The Thursday call, she said. Fischer introducing someone who walked away from a Meridian situation. I don’t think that’s an accident.
No, said Sean. I don’t either.
He’s making a statement about what kind of round this is, said Clara. The people he’s bringing in aren’t just capital. They’re a specific kind of signal.
Sean looked at the prep document.
’She’s right,’ he thought. ’Fischer has been in this industry twenty-two years. He doesn’t make accidental introductions.’
Talk to Thomas Reeve before Thursday, he said. Not a formal conversation. Informal. You’ll know what to ask.
I already have his number, said Clara. I’ll call him this afternoon.
How are you feeling about the board call tomorrow, he said.
A pause. The kind she took when she was deciding whether to answer the professional version or the actual version.
Good, she said. Prepared. The parameters are right and I know them completely. Another pause. Twelve days.
He looked at that.
She’d adjusted the model.
Twelve days, he replied.
I don’t make optimistic models, she said. I make accurate ones. The Fischer call is Thursday. The board call is tomorrow. By Friday I’ll know exactly how much time there is.
Friday then, he said.
Friday, she confirmed.
He put his phone down and looked at the prep document and felt the specific warmth of something that was in motion and was moving correctly.
—-----------
Kwon called at eleven.
His voice had a different quality from the previous call. Not panicked. Kwon didn’t panic. But the professional composure was carrying something additional underneath it.
"The photograph situation," said Kwon. "It’s moved."
Sean sat up. "Tell me."
"Someone reached out to a person in our label’s marketing department yesterday," said Kwon. "Not a journalist. Not directly. Someone described as a research consultant asking about public appearances and relationship confirmations for talent at the label." He paused. "The marketing person didn’t think anything of it and answered general questions about public appearance policies. But one of the questions was specifically about whether the label confirmed or denied personal relationships."
"They’re building documentation," said Sean.
"That’s what it looks like," said Kwon. "The photograph gets significantly more useful if it’s accompanied by a label representative’s statement that the label neither confirms nor denies." He paused. "That’s the language of something being prepared for publication."
Sean looked at the campus outside his window.
"Seven weeks," he said.
"Seven weeks and two days," said Kwon. "I’ve started counting differently."
"Who publishes this kind of material," said Sean. "Not the tabloid version. The industry-adjacent version. Someone who covers entertainment but with a specific angle toward finance or business connections."
"There are three publications I can think of," said Kwon. "One of them had a story six months ago about a rival label’s investment structure that was quite specific. The kind of specific you get when someone feeds you the angle."
"Fed stories," said Sean. "Meaning someone has done this before."
"Meaning someone knows how to make information appear to come from multiple directions simultaneously," said Kwon. "Which makes it harder to address directly because there’s no single source to contain."
Sean thought about what Max had said.
The financial inquiries and the photograph. Both moving in the same two-week window. Both indirect. Both using third parties to do the approaching.
He thought about that.
"Kwon," he said.
