Triple X System
Chapter 482: Inner Circle
The heavy silence that fell over the Royal Strategy Chamber was far colder than the subterranean vaults beneath the keep.
No one moved. The high councilors, who only moments prior had been shouting and pounding their fists against the oak table over falling barrier percentages, sat frozen in their high-backed chairs. Their eyes shifted nervously between the dark blood-gold signet ring resting on the stone map and the pale-blue spatial light pulsing softly from Kyle’s right palm.
Standing at the head of the long table, King Troy did not sit back down. His broad, armored chest rose and fell in slow, heavy breaths as his sharp, battle-hardened gaze locked onto Kyle. The king was a veteran of a hundred campaigns, a ruler who had watched his kingdom transform into an iron fortress, but he was also a master of reading raw power. He didn’t need a system diagnostic to know that the young man standing ten paces away was no longer just a talented warrior returning from an expedition.
Kyle’s presence filled the gargantuan room. The ambient shadows along the stone walls leaned inward toward his boots, responsive to the subtle, grounded pressure of his newly evolved Demon Knight core.
Princess Lumia took another step toward the edge of the map table, her hands resting on the smooth stone. Her pale face, usually so composed and distant during high war council meetings, betrayed a rare mixture of disbelief and profound relief. "Kyle... when you say the logs were fed to Ona... you are certain the leak originated from this table?"
"Ona was a puppet, but she wasn’t a mastermind," Kyle said, his voice flat, calm, and utterly devoid of hesitation. "She didn’t have the high-tier clearance required to override the subterranean ley-line safety locks at the Iron Works six months ago. She was given manual override codes that only three people in this kingdom possess."
Behind him, Falcon stepped forward slightly, her four dark brown tails swishing in a slow, predatory rhythm. Her golden eyes scanned the faces of the seated councilors, her fingers resting lightly near her belt where her glass vials of recovery liquid sat. "And those override codes weren’t stolen. They were handed over on a velvet cushion while Kyle was pushed into the Dead Ravine."
"This is absurd!"
Councilor Varos—the elderly high advisor who had been shouting about the barrier percentages minutes earlier—stood up so fast his heavy oak chair scraped violently against the stone floor. His face was flushed red, his thin hands trembling as he pointed a wrinkled finger across the table. "Your Majesty! Are we to sit here and allow a returnee, regardless of his deeds at the Crimson Ridge, to sling treasonous accusations at the High Council?! We have poured every drop of our lives into holding this capital together while he was missing!"
"Sit down, Varos," King Troy said. His voice was low, but it carried a weight that made the old councilor’s jaw snap shut instantly. The king’s eyes never left Kyle. "Let him speak."
Kyle didn’t raise his voice. He didn’t draw his dark shadow blade, nor did he flare his dark demon fire. He simply took three slow, deliberate steps forward, his boots clicking rhythmically against the stone floor until he stood directly opposite Councilor Varos and the quiet, broad-shouldered man sitting to Varos’s left—Minister Hallow, the keeper of the royal treasury and former overseer of the Iron Works’ supply lines.
"Six months ago," Kyle spoke softly, his slitted dark eyes fixing on Minister Hallow’s pale, sweating face, "when the ley-line instability first spiked in Sector Four, two official reports were filed. One was sent to Princess Lumia’s desk, claiming the fluctuation was caused by natural seismic shifting in the lower mantle. The second report was sent to a covert blood-crystal array in the Bone Church."
Hallow’s knuckles turned white as he gripped the edge of the table. "You... you have no proof of such an array—"
"I broke the array myself," Kyle cut him off cleanly. "I crushed the core, erased Malakor the Arch-Lich, and wiped Lord Cassian’s network from the face of the plateau. When I broke that third core, the spatial threads connecting the church to the kingdom’s inner line snapped. The secondary feedback didn’t vanish, Hallow. It recorded the primary soul-signature of the sender."
Kyle raised his gauntleted hand, flexing his iron fingers.
HUMMMMMMMMM...
A faint, violet spatial projection erupted from the Spire Key in his palm, expanding over the center of the strategy table. The pale-blue light formed an intricate, rotating geometric diagram of the kingdom’s subterranean ley-line network, detailing every single mana transfer made over the past year. Highlighting two specific nodes beneath the Iron Works were bright crimson text lines displaying manual override signatures—signatures stamped with Minister Hallow’s private royal seal and Councilor Varos’s secondary clearance code.
The strategy chamber fell into a terrifying, suffocating quiet.
Princess Lumia’s breath hitched. She looked at the glowing violet diagram floating over the map, then turned her head slowly toward Hallow and Varos. "Hallow... Varos... you signed off on the ley-line diversion? While our guards were bleeding on the outer wall?"
"It... it was for the survival of the state!" Varos stammered, his red face instantly turning as pale as ash as he backed away from the table, his knees trembling. "The Blood Moon Clan was overwhelming us! Lord Cassian promised... he promised that if we fed them the raw ley-line mana to open their sector gates, they would leave the central capital untouched! We were saving the kingdom!"
"You were selling the kingdom," Seraphina said coldly, stepping up beside Kyle. She held her royal ocean trident vertically, its blue prongs glowing with a soft, threatening light. "You fed your own soldiers’ vitality to a vampire lord so you could sit in comfortable chairs and pretend you were managing a crisis."
"You fools," King Troy whispered.
The king slowly rose to his full height. His heavy iron armor clanked, and his hand rested on the hilt of his massive greatsword. His battle-scarred face was a mask of absolute, terrifying fury. "You compromised our lower barriers, crippled our iron works, and allowed Ona to corrupt our guards... for a covenant with a monster?"
"Your Majesty, please!" Minister Hallow cried out, suddenly pushing himself back from the table and drawing a hidden, blood-stained short-dagger from inside his heavy robes. His eyes were wide with blind, cornered panic. "The Spire is opening! The lower realms are doomed anyway! Cassian was supposed to—"
Before Hallow could finish his sentence, or even raise his dagger, a shadow erased the light between him and the table.
Yua didn’t wait for a royal command.
She moved with the instantaneous, feral speed of a demon brawler, blurring across the stone floor in a fraction of a millisecond. Her pale hand, trailing razor-thin ribbons of crimson blood-mana, clamped around Hallow’s throat with bone-crushing force, lifting the fully grown minister off his feet and slamming his back hard against the reinforced stone wall behind the council table.
THUMP!
Hallow’s dagger clattered uselessly onto the floor as he clawed frantically at Yua’s hand, his legs kicking wildly in the air as his face turned dark purple.
"You talk too much for a worm," Yua purred, her sharp red eyes flashing with wild amusement, her ivory fangs bared inches from his nose. "Boss, can I break his neck now? He’s making my ears hurt."
"Keep him alive," Kyle commanded smoothly, not even turning his head. "King Troy needs the names of every sub-officer in their supply chain."
"Fine, fine," Yua sighed dramatically, though her grip did not loosen an inch as she pinned the choking minister against the wall like a bug on a board.
On the other side of the table, Councilor Varos dropped to his knees, weeping hysterically and pressing his forehead against the cold stone floor. "Mercy, Your Majesty! Mercy! We were deceived! We didn’t know Conner would return with the Spire Key!"
King Troy looked down at the kneeling old man with cold, unyielding disgust. He raised his hand, gesturing toward the elite guards standing at the perimeter of the room.
"Arrest Councilor Varos and Minister Hallow," King Troy commanded, his voice echoing through the chamber like an iron hammer. "Strip their families of all royal titles, seize their estates, and place them in the lowest subterranean cells beneath the keep. Every sub-officer listed in their supply logs is to be detained before nightfall."
"At once, Your Majesty!" the captain of the guard shouted, saluting sharply before leading six armored guards forward to drag the weeping councilor and the choking minister out of the chamber.
As the heavy oak double doors slammed shut behind the guards, taking the pathetic cries of the traitors with them, the remaining councilors and generals sat in stunned, terrified silence. They kept their eyes fixed on the map table, not daring to make a sound or catch Kyle’s eye.
King Troy walked around the head of the table, stopping a few feet from Kyle. The king looked down at the dark blood-gold signet ring of Lord Cassian, then looked at the quiet, unyielding posture of the young warrior before him.
"Six months ago, when you vanished into the Dead Ravine, I feared we had lost our sharpest blade," King Troy said softly, his deep voice carrying a rare, personal warmth. He extended his heavy, armored hand, resting it firmly on Kyle’s left shoulder. "You didn’t just survive, Kyle. You came back and saved this kingdom twice over."
"The kingdom saved itself by holding the line while we were gone," Kyle replied quietly, meeting the king’s gaze without flinching. "The Blood Moon Clan is destroyed, but the Crimson Ridge is only the outer door. The Spire is open, Your Majesty."
Princess Lumia walked over to stand beside her father, her blue eyes shining as she looked at Kyle, Falcon, Seraphina, and Yua. "The transit gateway you unlocked... does it truly link directly from the archives to the first tier?"
"It does," Seraphina answered for him, inclining her head politely toward the princess. "The Spire Key grants Kyle administrative authority over the High Plateau’s spatial grid. The portal in your lower vaults is completely secure, immune to external interception. The Lumia Kingdom is no longer isolated."
"A direct path to the higher realms..." Princess Lumia murmured, her hands coming together over her chest as a genuine, radiant smile finally broke across her face. "No more fear of being surrounded by the void corruption. We can rebuild."
"We rebuild starting today," King Troy declared, turning to face his remaining generals and councilors. "Clear this room. Prepare a full royal banquet for our champions tonight, and issue a kingdom-wide decree. The war against the Blood Moon is won!"
The remaining generals stood up instantly, saluting with fierce, renewed vigor, their previous panic completely replaced by pride and relief.
As the council chamber began to clear, Falcon leaned over toward Kyle, her four dark brown tails giving a light, relaxed swish behind her back. "A royal banquet, huh? Does that mean real food, or more of those dry military rations we’ve been eating for three weeks?"
"If there isn’t a whole roasted boar and five barrels of sweet wine," Yua chimed in, walking back from the wall while wiping her hands on her trousers, "I’m going to go down to the dungeons and chew on Minister Hallow’s other leg."
Kyle couldn’t help the faint, quiet smirk that touched his lips as he looked at his team. The heavy burden of the long climb through the Crimson Ridge, the brutal battle on the High Altar, and the tense confrontation with Cassian seemed to lift from their shoulders, replaced by the warm, safe atmosphere of the keep.
He looked down at his right hand, where the faint, pale-blue light of the Spire Key hummed quietly against his palm, resting beneath his gauntlet.
The purge of the inner circle was complete. The kingdom was secure, his allies were safe, and their base on the High Plateau was locked tight.
Tonight, they would rest, eat, and celebrate their victory. But as Kyle looked out through the high stained-glass windows of the strategy chamber toward the distant, glowing line of the Spire rising into the sky, he knew that this peace was merely a brief breath between Chapters.
Tomorrow, the true climb into the higher tiers would begin.
