Chapter 472: Boiling River

The heavy, suffocating silence that settled over the ruins of the Bone Church was short-lived.

With the three primary core crystals shattered and Malakor turned to dust, the remaining structural integrity of the gargantuan cathedral gave way entirely. High above, the soaring arches carved from ancient dragon skulls cracked and groaned before crashing down into the abyss, taking tons of bone spires and iron rib-plating with them.

"This whole sector is coming down!" Falcon yelled, her golden eyes reflecting the falling debris. She helped Kyle to his feet, keeping a supportive arm around his waist while her four dark brown tails twitched nervously, ready to ignite with emerald fire if a falling boulder came too close.

"The northern passage," Seraphina said, her blue hair whipping around her face as she pointed her ocean trident toward a massive archway at the rear of the cavern. The collapse hadn’t reached that section yet; the archway was carved from solid, unfused volcanic granite rather than bone. "That’s the exit leading out of Sector Two!"

"Then we run," Yua grinned, though her chest was heaving and her pale forehead was slick with sweat. "I’m not getting buried under a mountain of old skeletons after all that work."

Kyle took a deep breath, forcing his legs to stabilize as the severe core fatigue from his Full Synchrony Protocol slowly began to recede. The pitch-black demon flames were gone from his skin, returning to his inner core where they flickered weakly. "I can walk. Let’s move."

They sprinted across the crumbling obsidian ledge, leaping over widening fissures in the stone just as huge chunks of the ceiling smashed into the ground behind them. Seraphina led the way, using a continuous stream of pressurized sea water to knock aside falling debris, while Falcon and Yua flanked Kyle. They ducked under the heavy granite archway just as a deafening rumble signaled the complete, irreversible cave-in of the Bone Church behind them.

A wall of thick gray dust blew through the archway, but the heavy granite doors slammed shut under automated mechanical locks, sealing off the destroyed cathedral for good.

Beyond the exit of Sector Two lay **The Boiling River of Dross**—Sector Three.

The transition from the freezing, bone-chilled cathedral to this new sector was immediate and oppressive. The air temperature spiked by nearly eighty degrees in a matter of seconds, becoming so thick and dry that breathing felt like inhaling liquid fire.

They stood on a narrow obsidian cliff edge overlooking a gargantuan volcanic canyon that stretched as far as the eye could see. Three hundred feet below them, a massive, roaring river of dark red magma—heavily saturated with caustic blood-rot and sulfur—churned violently through the floor of the canyon. The atmosphere was a nightmare of shimmering heat haze, thick yellow sulfur gas, and dense clouds of toxic crimson steam rising from the liquid dross.

"Unbelievable," Falcon gasped, coughing slightly as the harsh sulfur air hit her throat. "The air itself is trying to cook us alive."

"It’s not just heat," Seraphina said, stepping to the front of the ledge. She held her ocean trident in both hands, her face pale as she inspected the boiling river. "The liquid below is dross—a toxic fusion of volcanic lava and refined blood-rot acid. Standard elemental water evaporates before it even touches that stuff."

’Scanning environment,’ Snow’s calm voice echoed in Kyle’s mind, bringing a welcome sense of clarity through the sweltering heat. ’Kyle, the ambient temperature in Sector Three exceeds five hundred degrees Celsius. Prolonged exposure without thermal protection will cause internal organ failure within twelve minutes. Furthermore, the local spatial grid is completely locked down by high-density volcanic arrays. No spatial leaps are possible across the canyon.’

Kyle wiped a bead of sweat from his forehead, his dark slitted eyes scanning the vast expanse of the boiling river. "There’s no bridge."

"No bridge, no boats, and we can’t walk on that liquid," Yua said, leaning over the edge to look down at the bubbling magma. She spat over the side; her saliva evaporated into steam before it traveled ten feet. "How are we supposed to cross a river three miles wide?"

"We don’t cross on foot," Kyle said. He turned to Seraphina and Falcon. "We need a combined barrier. Seraphina, can you create a continuous sphere of compressed sea water?"

Seraphina nodded, though her jaw was set tight. "I can, but at these temperatures, the water will boil away in seconds unless I have a cooling agent to stabilize the outer layer."

"That’s where my green fire comes in," Falcon said, stepping forward. Her four brown tails swished behind her, their tips igniting with intense, emerald-green poison flames. "My green poison fire isn’t just hot—it has an endothermic corrosive property when condensed. If I wrap my green fire around Seraphina’s water, it will create a thermal isolation barrier. The heat won’t be able to penetrate."

"A steam-shield propulsion," Yua realized, her red eyes lighting up. "Seraphina provides the liquid hull, Falcon provides the thermal insulation, and the heat from the river below will expand the steam between the layers to propel us across like an airship!"

"Precisely," Kyle said, his dark coat rustling in the thermal draft. "Set it up. We aren’t the only ones in this canyon."

As if on cue, a series of high-pitched, terrifying shrieks pierced through the roaring sound of the boiling river.

High above the crimson steam clouds, dozens of massive shadows emerged. They were **Blood-Drakes**—reptilian Void beasts with leathery crimson wings, jagged obsidian teeth, and scales forged from hardened volcanic slag. Their eyes glowed with yellow hatred as they caught sight of the four figures on the cliff ledge.

"They smell our vitality," Yua growled, her pale claws extending as dark blood-mana crackled around her forearms. "Looks like we’re having airborne pests for company."

"Form the barrier now!" Kyle commanded.

Seraphina slammed the butt of her ocean trident onto the stone floor. "Ocean Art: Sovereign Hydro-Sphere!"

A massive torrent of crystal-clear sea water erupted from her trident, expanding outward to form a perfectly spherical, thirty-foot bubble around the four of them. The heat inside the bubble instantly dropped, replaced by cool, moisture-rich air that allowed them all to breathe normally again.

Falcon immediately followed up. She threw her hands wide, her four brown tails blasting four concentrated streams of emerald poison fire onto the outer surface of the water bubble. The green flames spread rapidly, forming a shimmering, emerald-and-blue energy shell that repelled the scorching heat radiating from the river below.

"Propulsion locked!" Falcon shouted, her dark brown skin glowing with effort. "Hold on tight!"

With a powerful push from Falcon’s tail-fire, the insulated water bubble shot off the obsidian cliff, gliding out over the roaring, boiling River of Dross like a shining meteor.

The sensation of floating three hundred feet above a three-mile-wide river of liquid magma and blood-rot was harrowing.

Below them, massive geysers of dark red dross exploded into the air, splashing against the outer green-and-blue barrier. Every time the caustic dross hit the shell, a violent hiss echoed through the bubble, but Falcon’s endothermic green fire neutralized the acidic heat, preventing the inner sea water from boiling away.

"It’s holding!" Yua laughed, standing near the edge of the water wall and looking down at the churning lava below. "You two actually pulled it off!"

"Don’t celebrate yet!" Seraphina warned, her teeth clenched as sweat dripped down her neck. Maintaining the structural density of the water sphere against the atmospheric pressure was taking a massive toll on her stamina. "The drakes are closing in!"

A pack of eight Blood-Drakes swooped down from the steam clouds, their massive wings beating against the hot air as they surrounded the floating bubble. The lead drake, a beast with a forty-foot wingspan and a head crowned with jagged bone horns, opened its massive maw and loosed a stream of liquid volcanic fire straight at the bubble’s top dome.

*BOOM!*

The impact of the fire-breath caused the entire water sphere to shudder violently, tilting sideways as its forward momentum was disrupted.

"I’ve got the top!" Kyle called out.

He leaped upward inside the bubble, his shadow blade drawn. He didn’t need to exit the barrier completely; he simply extended his blade through the upper layer of Seraphina’s water, coating the steel in a dense layer of pitch-black demon fire.

"Demon Art: Shadow Slash!" Kyle roared, swinging his blade in a broad horizontal arc.

A twenty-foot crescent of dark, ravenous demon fire burst through the upper wall of the sphere, slicing clean through the stream of volcanic fire and catching the lead Blood-Drake across its chest. The pitch-black flames consumed the beast’s volcanic scales in an instant, causing the creature to screech in agony before plunging headfirst into the boiling dross river below, where it dissolved into ash.

"Nice shot!" Yua cheered. "My turn!"

Two more drakes lunged at the sides of the bubble, their massive obsidian talons scraping against Falcon’s green poison fire layer. Yua stepped up to the edge, her crimson claws glowing with concentrated blood-mana. Instead of shooting fire, Yua thrust her hands outward, extending ten long, razor-thin threads of blood-mana straight through the barrier.

The blood-threads wrapped tightly around the necks and wings of the two drakes. Yua grinned wickedly and yanked her arms backward with immense physical force.

*CRACK-CRACK!*

The two massive beasts were yanked violently toward each other, their heads colliding with enough force to shatter their skulls. Yua released the threads, letting their limp bodies fall into the boiling river below.

"We’re halfway across!" Falcon called out, her voice strained as her green poison fire flickered slightly. "The heat density in the middle of the river is twice as high! Seraphina, give me more water pressure!"

"I’m giving you everything I have!" Seraphina grit her teeth, her azure eyes burning with pure determination as she drove more ocean mana into her trident.

The thermal pressure in the center of the canyon was insane. The air outside the bubble reached nearly eight hundred degrees, turning the outer emerald fire into a roaring, blinding furnace. Huge waves of dross splashed up from below, reaching fifty feet into the air like grasping hands of liquid magma.

’Kyle,’ Snow warned in his mind. ’A high-density energy signature is emerging from the deep channel of the river directly ahead. It is a sector guardian.’

Before Kyle could alert the group, the surface of the boiling river exploded.

A gargantuan beast rose from the depths of the dross—a **Volcanic Blood-Hydra**. It had three massive, serpentine heads covered in thick, obsidian-plated scales, with eyes that glowed like molten gold. Each head was as large as a house, and its long, scaled necks were dripping with boiling magma and blood-rot acid.

The central head let out a deafening, metallic roar that created a physical shockwave across the river, sending massive ripples through Seraphina’s water bubble.

"A Hydra?!" Falcon gasped, her four tails whipping frantically. "How can anything live in liquid dross?!"

"It’s infused with the sector core’s residual energy!" Seraphina shouted, struggling to keep the bubble stable as the shockwave pushed them backward. "If it hits us with a direct strike, the barrier will collapse!"

The three heads of the Hydra reared back simultaneously, their wide maws gathering huge spheres of concentrated, boiling dross and dark blood-magic.

"We don’t have time to dodge!" Yua yelled.

Kyle stepped to the front of the bubble, his dark slitted eyes locking onto the central head of the Hydra. His core fatigue was still present, but the sheer urgency of the situation forced his dark element to respond. He raised his left hand, his pitch-black gauntlet flaring with concentrated demon fire.

"Seraphina, Falcon—focus all propulsion forward!" Kyle ordered, his voice cold and steady. "Don’t stop the bubble. Drive it straight through!"

"Are you crazy?!" Falcon shouted, but she immediately redirected her green tail-fire to blast backward, sending the bubble surging forward at maximum speed right toward the three-headed monster.

"Yua, support my strike!" Kyle commanded.

"Got it!" Yua stepped beside him, pressing her palms against the back of his shoulders, channeling her rich crimson blood-mana directly into Kyle’s body to bolster his depleted reserves.

With Yua’s blood-mana fueling his core, Kyle’s shadow blade expanded into a thirty-foot column of pure, screaming black demon fire that devoured the light inside the water sphere.

The Hydra unleashed its triple attack—three massive torrents of boiling dross and dark blood-fire shot straight toward the speeding bubble.

"Demon Blood Art: Abyssal Cleaver!" Kyle screamed.

He swung his blade downward with every ounce of strength in his body.

The thirty-foot column of black demon fire shot through the front of the water barrier, combining with Yua’s crimson blood-mana to form a colossal, dark red and black energy blade. The energy blade sliced cleanly through the Hydra’s triple breath attack, parting the streams of boiling dross like water, and cleaved straight down through the central and right heads of the giant beast!

*BOOOOOOM!*

The central and right heads of the Volcanic Hydra were instantly decapitated, their massive neck stumps erupting in a shower of dark, smoking blood before being consumed by Kyle’s black demon fire.

The remaining left head screeched in horror as its body collapsed back into the boiling river, creating a massive tidal wave of dross that parted cleanly around the speeding water bubble.

With nothing left standing in their path, the insulated water sphere shot out of the central canyon channel, speeding across the final mile of the boiling river like a bullet.

*THUD!*

The water bubble touched down smoothly on the cool, dark granite landing on the far side of the Boiling River of Dross.

Seraphina released her hold on her trident, and the water barrier dissolved into a fine, refreshing mist that washed over the four of them, instantly cooling their overheated skin. Falcon collapsed onto her knees, panting heavily as her green poison fire vanished from her four tails, which lay limp on the stone floor.

"We... we made it..." Falcon wheezed, wiping sweat from her brow and flashing a tired grin. "I never want to see a river of magma again as long as I live."

Seraphina leaned heavily on her trident, nodding in agreement. "The elemental friction was intense... but we crossed Sector Three without losing anyone."

Yua rolled her shoulders, shaking out her arms as she looked back across the three-mile expanse of boiling dross. The ruined body of the Hydra was sinking beneath the magma, and the remaining Blood-Drakes had scattered into the high steam clouds, terrified by Kyle’s demon fire.

"That was a hell of a ride," Yua chuckled, walking over to Kyle and clapping him on the back. "Your dark element cuts through everything, doesn’t it?"

Kyle stood at the edge of the landing, his dark coat settling around him. His breathing was steady, though his dark brown eyes showed the deep weariness of back-to-back high-tier battles. He looked down at his gauntlet, watching the last wisps of black smoke fade into his skin.

"Four sectors clear," Kyle said softly, turning his gaze toward the dark, winding mountain pass ahead.

Beyond the granite landing lay the final stretch of the Crimson Ridge—a towering, razor-thin mountain pass carved between two colossal peaks of dark volcanic glass. At the very end of the pass, looming against the blood-red sky, was the immense, multi-spired fortress of the Blood Moon Clan.

"Sector Four is the Obsidian Pass," Kyle said, his voice dropping into a low, icy register as he drew his coat tight. "The final choke point before the central castle. There are no more core puzzles or river traps. Just the Lieutenant’s elite honor guard standing between us and the fortress doors."

Falcon pushed herself up, her four tails swishing back to life as her golden eyes burned with renewed energy. "Then let’s go finish this."

Seraphina raised her ocean trident, her blue eyes fixed on the distant castle spires. "We stand with you, Kyle."

With the Boiling River of Dross behind them, the four of them turned their backs on the fiery canyon and stepped onto the dark stone path of the Obsidian Pass, ready to shatter the final gate.
