Triple X System
Chapter 422: Nile Death(2)
The descent into the vast valley beneath the subterranean waterfall was a silent, grueling ordeal that pushed every member of their small group to the absolute brink of human endurance.
With Elara unconscious, Marcus and two of the stronger male refugees took turns carrying her frail body across the narrow, jagged basalt ledge that spiraled down the damp cliff face. The mist rising from the valley floor was thick, pale white, and strangely sticky, clinging to their clothing and skin like a wet shroud. Every time a stray drift of the vapor touched the outer edge of the dying light barrier, it made a terrifying, low sizzling sound, slowly eroding the golden magic bit by bit.
Kyle walked at the very front of the line, his left hand holding Yua’s securely, their fingers interwoven in a tight, protective grip. His right hand remained low, his shadow-infused boots treading softly over the slick, bone-littered stone path.
[Kyle,] Snow’s voice spoke smoothly inside his mind, her presence carrying a soft, intimate warmth that anchored his racing thoughts amidst the suffocating gloom. [The atmospheric density inside the valley is changing rapidly. The white mist ahead is composed of aerosolized necrotic spores. It is not merely toxic air—it is a hive-mind spore culture known as the Living Rot.]
’How bad is it, Snow?’ Kyle asked silently, his dark eyes narrowing as he peered into the murky pale fog twenty yards ahead.
[If the barrier fails completely, the spores will enter through any exposed mucous membranes or open wounds,] Snow explained, her tone deeply analytical yet brimming with genuine worry for him. [Once inside, they begin consuming organic cellular structure, replacing living muscle with rigid spore husks within less than twenty minutes. Kyle, you must not let Yua or the refugees inhale even a fraction of a breath outside the purified zone.]
’What about my demon scales?’ Kyle queried mentally. ’Can they filter it?’
[Your scales provide complete physical surface immunity,] Snow reassured him gently, her voice pulsing with gentle confidence. [However, the physical effort required to carry or defend forty-seven people in this dense atmosphere will exhaust your shadow reserves rapidly. You need to find a safe zone to allow Elara time to regain her consciousness and core energy.]
Yua pulled her cloak tighter around her shoulders, her crimson eyes glowing like two burning coals in the dim, white gloom. She looked at the giant, bone-like pillars rising out of the earth around them—massive, bleached ribcages of long-extinct cosmic beasts that curved over the valley floor like a ribcage tunnel.
"This is the burial ground of the First Beasts," Yua whispered, her voice low and raspy as she leaned her head slightly toward Kyle’s shoulder while they walked. "Ancient lore in the vampire archives spoke of a place on Kraken where dead leviathans were brought to rot so their marrow could feed the planet’s core. The fog isn’t natural, Kyle. It’s the digestive fluid of the world itself."
"Digestive fluid..." Kyle muttered, checking his step as he reached the bottom of the spiral path.
His boots sank two inches into a soft, spongy ground that felt unnervingly like damp velvet. The entire floor of the valley was covered in a deep carpet of pale, fleshy moss that hummed with a faint, nauseating vibration whenever a boot pressed down on it.
Marcus stumbled to a stop behind them, panting heavily as he adjusted his grip on Elara’s unconscious form. "Kyle... the light dome... it’s shrinking."
Kyle turned his head instantly.
The pale golden sphere cast by Elara’s wand—now held loosely in Marcus’s free hand—had compressed from a wide, forty-foot dome down to a tight, trembling bubble barely twelve feet across. The forty-seven refugees were packed together like cattle, their shoulders pressed tight against one another, their faces pale with sheer panic as the swirling white fog clawed at the thin golden glass.
"She’s losing her passive mana connection," Kyle said, his voice hard with resolve as he stepped back toward the cluster of humans. "Marcus, hand me her wand."
Kyle took the wooden shaft from Marcus’s hand. The moment his fingers brushed the polished grain, his shadow core reacted violently, dark essence crackling along his arm as the divine light magic inside the wand resisted his dark aura.
[Kyle, do not attempt to channel light magic directly,] Snow warned him instantly, her tone sharp and alert. [Your dark nature will shatter the wand’s crystalline core! Instead, let me act as a bridge. I can convert a portion of your raw vital stamina into neutral mana and feed it into the wand’s storage matrix!]
’Do it, Snow!’ Kyle commanded in his thoughts.
A warm, gentle sensation washed through Kyle’s nervous system as Snow initiated the conversion process. He felt a sudden, sharp dip in his physical strength—a momentary wave of dizziness that made his knees tremble—but a second later, a brilliant, clean pulse of golden light erupted from the tip of Elara’s wand.
The shrinking air sphere expanded violently outward, blasting the encroaching white fog twenty feet back with a soft, resonant hum.
The refugees let out a collective, ragged sob of pure relief, falling to their knees on the soft, fleshy carpet of the valley floor.
Yua caught Kyle’s arm as he swayed slightly from the energy drain, her crimson eyes wide with concern. "Kyle! You’re burning your own strength to fuel her focus!"
"I’m fine," Kyle gritted out, forcing his legs to stay locked as he smiled down at her pale, lovely face. "Snow bridged the gap for me. It’s just physical fatigue."
Yua reached up, her cool, delicate fingers tracing the line of his jaw, her eyes searching his with an intense, fierce devotion that went far deeper than any words could express. "You give too much of yourself to keep everyone breathing. If you collapse, Kyle... who keeps us alive?"
"You do," Kyle said simply, gazing straight into her shining red eyes. "You and I. We don’t drop until every single one of these people is safe."
Yua’s lips parted slightly, a soft, breathless sound escaping her throat before a warm, breathtaking smile touched her lips. She leaned up on her tiptoes, pressing her lips gently against his cheek, leaving a lingering warmth on his cold skin. "Then let’s keep moving, my love."
[Sensors detecting multiple high-speed bio-signatures moving within the fog at ground level,] Snow announced, her voice shifting back into high-priority alert status, though her tone remained grounded and focused for him. [They are moving beneath the pale moss layer. Distance: sixty yards and closing fast.]
"Yua, heads up," Kyle warned aloud, handing Elara’s wand back to Marcus. "Keep that wand pointed straight up, Marcus. Don’t let go of it no matter what happens."
Marcus nodded grimly, clutching the glowing wooden shaft with both hands as if it were his own soul.
Yua stepped out beyond the golden perimeter, her boots making a soft squelching sound on the pale carpet. She raised her hands, two sharp, crystalline blood daggers instantly forming around her fingers, their crimson hue glowing brilliantly against the milky white fog.
"What’s coming, Snow?" Kyle asked mentally, his **Kirlin Eyes** flaring into life as he stood beside Yua.
[Bone-Crawler Larvae,] Snow reported directly in his mind, highlighting the heat signatures beneath the ground in bright red outline bands. [A-Rank necrotic scavengers. They navigate through the fleshy root systems of the valley floor. They are armless, segmented beasts with razor-sharp bone mandibles capable of crushing solid steel.]
"They’re traveling under the carpet," Kyle told Yua, pointing toward three rapidly approaching ripples in the pale moss sixty feet out. "They’re coming in fast."
"Let them come," Yua whispered, her eyes flashing with lethal anticipation.
She didn’t wait for the creatures to breach the surface. She slammed her right heel hard onto the ground, unleashing **Sanguine Domain: Blood Spike Harvest**.
*THUMP-THUMP-THUMP!*
Dozens of razor-sharp, six-foot spears of hardened crimson blood erupted from the ground in a devastating forward line, impaling the soil across thirty yards.
Thick, yellow necrotic fluid sprayed into the air as three massive, thick-bodied, blind creatures were thrust out of the ground, skewered straight through their segmented torsos by Yua’s blood spears. They thrashed wildly, their massive bone mandibles snapping uselessly at the cold air before going completely limp.
"Target down!" Yua called out, her voice filled with pride as she turned back to glance at Kyle.
[Caution, Kyle!] Snow shouted inside his head, her voice spiking with sudden, frantic energy. [The blood spray from those creatures is volatile! It reacts violently with the necrotic fog!]
Before Kyle could yell a warning, the yellow fluid dripping from the dead larvae hit the pale white mist.
*BOOM!*
A massive chemical detonation ignited in mid-air, a wave of pale green fire expanding outward through the fog and rushing straight toward the fragile golden air barrier where the refugees were huddled.
"ELARA’S WARD CAN’T TAKE THAT FIRE!" Marcus screamed.
Kyle didn’t think. He didn’t hesitate.
**Abyssal Talon Manifest + Transformation**
[Consuming remaining Demon Reserve...]
In less than a fraction of a second, black demonic scales armored his skin, and his shadow leg erupted into jagged, void-forged armor.
Kyle blurred across the gap, placing his armored body directly between the rushing green fireball and the terrified refugees.
**Abyssal Wall: Dark Aegis**
Kyle swept his shadow leg in a wide, sweeping arc across the air, pulling the ambient shadows of the valley around his body to form a massive, ten-foot barrier of solid black shadow-fire.
The green explosive flames slammed into Kyle’s shadow wall with deafening force!
*BOOOOOOOOM!*
The ground shook violently, throwing several refugees to their hands and knees. The blinding green heat washed over Kyle’s shadow wall, the sheer thermal energy melting his dark scales and scorching his arms, but he didn’t yield an inch. He roared through gritted teeth, pushing every ounce of his remaining strength into the barrier until the explosive wave finally dissipated into thin air.
When the smoke cleared, Kyle stood kneeling in the pale ash, dark smoke curling from his scorched arms, his breath coming in heavy, ragged gasps.
"KYLE!" Yua screamed, dropping her blood daggers and rushing to his side, throwing her arms around his neck and pulling his head against her chest. "Kyle! Are you hurt? Talk to me!"
Kyle let his transformation recede, his normal skin returning, covered in light soot but completely intact. He looked up into Yua’s tear-filled crimson eyes, offering her a faint, tired grin. "I told you... I won’t drop."
Yua sobbed out a soft laugh, pulling him tight against her, her face buried in his neck as she held him as if she would never let him go again.
[You were incredible, Kyle,] Snow’s voice spoke softly inside his skull, her tone laced with overwhelming relief, tenderness, and quiet pride. [The explosion cleared a massive path through the pale fog ahead. The entrance to the final region is visible just three hundred yards from here.]
Kyle rested his head against Yua’s shoulder for three brief seconds, feeling her warm heart beating against his chest, before he pushed himself up to his feet, keeping her hand locked tightly in his.
"Marcus! Keep moving!" Kyle called out, pointing toward the clear, fog-free tunnel visible between two massive bone pillars ahead. "We’re almost out of the valley!"
With Yua by his side, Elara safely carried in the center, and Snow guiding his every step inside his mind, Kyle led the survivors of humanity forward toward the fourth and final region of Planet Kraken: The Wandering Spring.
