Chapter 52: Chapter 52: Critical Situation

Azura finally stopped flailing, accepting her fate as a terrestrial being rather than a graceful sea creature. The floor had won. She had lost. Peace had been made.

And then Caelian made his move.

He approached her with the fluid grace of a man who had practiced looking effortlessly charming in front of mirrors since puberty. He bent down, took both her hands with theatrical tenderness, and pulled her to her feet as if she were a damsel in distress and he was the hero of a romance novel that hadn’t yet been cancelled for poor sales.

His smile was immaculate. His eyes were warm. His voice was a velvet purr.

"Don’t be embarrassed when you fall," he said, squeezing her hands gently. "You don’t need to act like this anymore. From now on, if you fall a thousand times, I’ll catch you a thousand times."

He paused, letting the words hang in the air like a perfectly timed mic drop.

Azura stared at him.

Her brain, which had never been courted before, short-circuited. Sparks flew. Error messages flashed. The system was rebooting.

In her original world, she had never dated. Never been flirted with. Never had a man look at her like she was something other than "that weird girl who talks to her sketchbook."

But even she, with her zero romantic experience, could recognize this.

This was flirting.

This was definitely flirting.

This was the kind of flirting that made her want to crawl back into the coffin and close the lid forever.

And yet, her mouth—that traitorous, unfiltered organ—decided to speak before her brain could intervene.

"Thank you for offering to help me if I fall over and over again," she said, nodding seriously. "But if I fall a thousand times, I’d rather go to the hospital to get checked out. Because if I’m falling that much, something is clearly wrong with my legs. Or my balance. Or my life choices. Actually, maybe I’ll invent some high-tech butt pads and knee guards. Patent them. Sell them to old people and clumsy people like me. Who knows—I might become a billionaire thanks to the inspiration I got from falling a thousand times."

She beamed at him.

"You could be my business partner. We’ll call it... ButtGuard?. Patent pending."

Caelian’s eye twitched.

It was subtle. Barely noticeable. But it was there—a tiny betrayal of the utter bewilderment coursing through his veins.

He had prepared for many reactions.

A blush. A push. A shy thank-you. A cold dismissal. Even a slap.

But a business pitch for butt pads?

That was not in any of his playbooks.

He felt, for the first time in his life, genuinely outflanked by a woman.

I need to update my playbook. This woman runs on different firmware.

Caesar, meanwhile, was having the time of his life.

He slapped his thigh so hard it echoed through the room. "PFFFTTT—!!!" He doubled over, wheezing. "She’d rather go to the hospital than be helped by you, brother! Turns out you’re less charming than a doctor and a—" he gasped for air, "—a BUTT GUARD! A literal butt guard! You just got out-charmed by protective gear for the posterior! You were right earlier—she definitely has a type—but it’s clearly NOT YOU!"

Caelian’s smile didn’t waver. But his eye twitched again.

He released Azura’s hands with practiced calm. Then, without a word, he bent down, picked up the coffin lid that had been discarded on the floor, and hurled it at Caesar’s face like a professional frisbee player aiming for the championship.

Caesar, despite still wheezing, caught it one-handed without even looking. The lid splintered against his palm, breaking into two useless halves that clattered to the floor.

"Cute throw," he said, still grinning. "Did you learn that from the pretty boy training manual?"

Caelian’s smile finally cracked into a sneer. "It’s funny hearing all that from you, Caesar. Considering just an hour ago, you were still traumatized by her. And now you’re acting all brave? Go on, then. Touch her. Or maybe even look at her...."

His lips moved silently, forming two words that only Caesar could read.

Meat. Bun.

Caesar’s face went from smug to scarlet in 0.3 seconds.

The memory came rushing back—being trapped between Azura’s bare chest, suffocating in a valley of softness so extreme it had nearly killed him. The shame. The confusion. The almost death by boobs.

"SHUT UP, YOU PRETTY BOY!" Caesar roared, kicking the broken coffin lid pieces across the room. "WHEN WE TRIED TO KIDNAP HER AND SHE SLAPPED YOU IN HER SLEEP—"

Azura had been thoroughly enjoying the show. Front-row seats to the Blackwood brothers’ domestic violence comedy hour, complete with flying coffin lid and crimson-faced insults. She was honestly impressed by their strength—and their commitment to nearly killing each other over what seemed to be a very stupid reason.

But then her brain, which could usually analyze a situation in milliseconds, slammed into gear like a rusty engine that had just been threatened with a jumpstart.

Kidnap...

Oh right.

She almost forgot about that part.

Why was she even thinking about letting them kick her away? Her entire goal was to cling to them like a desperate koala to stop them from going to the Crimson Crest Pack. Because they were planning to kidnap Selena and—

Wait.

She froze mid-thought.

Something was off.

Why did their words sound like they had met her before? Why did it feel like she was the kidnapping target instead of the female lead?

Her eyes narrowed. Her internal detective mode activated. She could practically hear the dramatic detective theme music playing in her head.

She marched forward, planting herself between Caelian and Caesar like a referee about to break up a kindergarten fight. She struck a pose—one hand up, one hand pointing dramatically at them, legs shoulder-width apart.

"HEY HEY HEY! Gentlemen! Break it up! No fighting in the no-fighting zone, which is everywhere!" she announced, her voice carrying the authority of someone who had absolutely no authority.

Both brothers stopped, staring at her like she’d grown a second head.

"I overheard your little conversation while I was playing dead in that very comfortable coffin. You said something about kidnapping someone tonight. And I just want to say—please don’t do that!"

She jabbed a finger at them.

"It’s a CRIME. A real one. With jail time and everything. If you have a kidnapping fetish, that’s between you and your therapist—but I will GLADLY volunteer as your victim instead of whatever poor soul you’re targeting! Take me instead! I’ll be your kidnapping victim! Even though there’s absolutely no point in kidnapping me because I’m useless, my wolf is hibernating, and I have the reputation of a reformed villain who now preaches about my sister like she’s a religious figure. And—"

She glanced over her shoulder at Kyler, who had been silently observing the chaos like a man watching ants fight over a crumb.

"Well, I’ve technically already been kidnapped by your uncle since an hour ago. Brought here without being told why. Transported to this suite in a coffin, might I add. In case anyone was wondering about the trauma I’m currently processing."

Kyler didn’t even look up. He picked up his glass, swirling the crimson liquid inside.

"When we check out of this hotel," he said flatly, "I’ll swap the coffin for a suitcase."

Azura’s soul left her body for a solid three seconds.

"NO—" she flailed her arms, "—THANK YOU! I appreciate the upgrade from corpse-container to luggage, truly, I do, but I was actually complaining! Not requesting a better transport vehicle!"

She took a deep breath, centering herself.

"Forget the coffin. Forget the suitcase. I just want to know what’s really going on!" She glared at the triplets. "Why am I here? Why do you both argue like you’ve known me for days when today is literally the first time I’ve ever laid eyes on your suspiciously handsome faces?"

Azura swiveled and pointed an accusatory finger at Caesar like a prosecutor delivering a final, damning verdict.

"And YOU! What you just said—accusing me of slapping your brother! That is SLANDER! That is defamation of character! I have never laid a hand on—"

"Not only did you slap me," Caelian interrupted smoothly, flashing her a teasing grin that made her want to slap him again just to prove a point, "you also kicked me."

Azura’s mouth opened wide.

Caesar shifted awkwardly, clearly debating whether honesty was the best policy. He opted for it, though he couldn’t quite meet her eyes.

"You also... almost made me choke to death. Because of your... boobs."

A long, painful silence descended.

Absolute, deafening silence.

Azura’s brain short-circuited. She could practically hear the dial-up internet sound echoing in her skull.

"...WHAT DO YOU MEAN, ’BECAUSE OF MY BOOBS’?!" she shrieked, gesturing wildly at her chest. "HOW DOES THAT EVEN WORK?! Did they grow legs and strangle you?! Did they develop sentience and decide to commit homicide via suffocation?! Are they secretly weapons of mass destruction that I’ve been blissfully unaware of?!"

She looked down at her own cleavage with deep suspicion.

"Have you two been plotting against me this whole time?!"

Azura was genuinely baffled. Had she developed amnesia so severe that she forgot committing assault with her own chesticles?

Before she could spiral further into her existential crisis, Caelus’s voice cut through from directly behind her—so close that she nearly jumped out of her skin.

"And about the kidnapping..." he said calmly, his breath ghosting past her ear, "you didn’t need to volunteer."

She whirled around, heart pounding.

"Because from the very beginning..." Caelus’s eyes bore into hers with unnerving intensity. "...you were the target of our kidnapping."

Azura’s soul left her body for the second time in one minute.

"...EXCUSE ME?!"

Her head was spinning. In the five days she’d been trapped in this world, she had grown accustomed to cryptic nonsense, veiled secrets, and a plot she couldn’t follow because she never actually read the damn book. But THIS? This took the cake, ate it, and demanded seconds.

"WHY?!" she demanded, throwing her hands up. "What possible reason could you have for wanting to kidnap ME?!"

"Because you’re our stepsister," Caelus stated flatly.

Azura blinked.

"...And also our fated mate."

Azura felt as though a giant, cartoonish question mark had materialized out of thin air and slammed directly onto her head.

She knew—she KNEW—from the steamy Chapters she’d skimmed in sheer panic that Selena was supposed to be their fated mate. Every single version of every single trope screamed that fact. Her gut feeling was screaming at her like a fire alarm that this was a massive misunderstanding.

But HOW?!

Before she could interrogate them further, a sharp knock interrupted the chaos.

Wilson opened the door, and Noah and Oliver practically stumbled inside. They froze at the sight of Azura—surrounded by the triplets like she was some kind of rare artifact on display, with Kyler lounging nearby like a bored cat—before quickly snapping to attention.

"Alphas," Oliver reported urgently, "we just got a report from our pack security. Suspicious movements near our border. And our scouts also confirmed that Alpha Aiden is secretly working with rogue groups to plan something near our territory. We need to return now."

Caelus absorbed the information with a stony expression, then nodded.

"We’ll head back immediately. But we need to be cautious. If Aiden knows we’re in this city, he’s likely already leaked our location. By the time we drive to the airport, his men will be waiting to take us out." He paused, his jaw tightening. "He knows we can’t shift in human territory. He’ll be heavily armed."

Caesar’s grin stretched wide, his eyes gleaming with barely contained excitement. He was already barking orders at Noah and Oliver—security formations, tactical positioning, weapons check—like a kid told they could stay up past bedtime.

Caelian, meanwhile, glanced at Kyler while pulling out his phone to contact someone about preparing their private jet.

"Uncle, you’re coming back too, right?"

Kyler simply nodded, rising from his seat with the fluid grace of a predator finally deciding to move.

He adjusted his cuff.

"Someone has to make sure you idiots don’t get yourselves killed."

Even though Azura’s brain was screaming at her that THIS WAS A CRITICAL SITUATION—that there were rogues, border threats, assassination plots, and a whole buffet of danger waiting for them—her mouth, unfortunately, had not received the memo.

"I know this is an emergency!" she blurted out, chasing after the triplets like a lost puppy. "I KNOW! BUT WE WERE IN THE MIDDLE OF A LIFE-CHANGING REVELATION HERE! You can’t just DROP ’you’re our fated mate’ on me and then pivot to WOLF POLITICS like it’s a commercial break! Could you—when you have a moment after you’ve assigned your men, called your plane, and planned your tactical genocide or whatever—just briefly explain what you mean by me being your fated mate?! And also the boobs thing?! I need a TIMELINE! I need a DIAGRAM! Because I refuse to believe that my chest has been committing crimes without my knowledge or consent—"

And then—

Something cold and sharp pricked her neck.

Azura’s eyes went wide. Her hand instinctively flew to the spot, fingers brushing against the tiny dart now embedded in her skin.

"Wh—"

Her words slurred. The world tilted. The hotel suite’s chandelier suddenly looked very, very wobbly.

Before her knees could buckle, strong arms caught her—and the last thing she registered was a voice, smooth and irritatingly calm, speaking as if discussing the weather.

"She’s too noisy. And her chaotic energy is frankly alarming. I’m genuinely concerned that what should be a straightforward fight will somehow turn into an apocalyptic battlefield because she trips over a rock and accidentally blows up a building."

Another voice snorted.

"Better to sedate her. When she wakes up, she’ll already be safely inside our territory. Problem solved."

Azura wanted to protest. She wanted to scream, "I AM A GROWN WOMAN, YOU CAN’T JUST DRUG ME LIKE A RUNAWAY BULLDOG!"

But her body had already surrendered to the sweet, sweet embrace of unconsciousness.

Her final coherent thought was:

I swear to God, if I wake up in another coffin—

Then everything went dark.
