Chapter 51: Chapter 51: Existential Crisis

The silence that descended upon the room was so thick you could have spread it on toast and served it at a funeral brunch.

Azura, still frozen in her seal-seizure-sadako-chimera pose, could practically hear the anime sound effect of a crow flying overhead.

Caw. Caw. Caw.

It was the kind of awkward silence that made people question their life choices, their existence, and why they hadn’t just stayed in bed that morning.

But Azura, to her credit—or perhaps her complete lack of self-preservation instincts—decided to double down.

If I’m already in the deep end... I might as well start doing synchronized swimming.

Her plan was simple: act so bizarre, so utterly unhinged, that Kyler would be too weirded out to demand compensation for the scooter incident. Maybe he’d even kick her out so fast he’d forget she existed.

A win-win. Foolproof. Bulletproof. Idiot-proof.

YES. GENIUS. FULL UNHINGE. ACTIVATE.

She thrust both arms out in front of her like a Jiangshi—a hopping Chinese vampire—and shot upright into a sitting position with the stiffness of a board that had just discovered consciousness after a century-long nap.

Then she crouched, raised both arms in the air like a cheerleader who had been possessed by the spirit of a drunken mime, and announced at the top of her lungs:

"TA-DAAAAAAA!!!! I’M AWAKE!!!"

She wiggled her fingers for emphasis.

"..."

The silence that followed was so profound that it felt like the room itself had died and gone to heaven just to escape this moment.

Even Wilson—who had been standing in the corner of the room trying to become one with the wallpaper—seriously considered jumping out the window. The 47th-floor window. Just to escape the secondhand embarrassment.

The triplets, meanwhile, were processing a very specific kind of shock.

It wasn’t the shock of seeing the woman they’d been trying to kidnap for days suddenly appear in front of them.

It wasn’t even the shock of finding her inside a coffin in their uncle’s hotel suite.

It was the shock of watching that woman—the very same woman they’d been tracking, hunting, and planning to drag back to their pack—do something that no sane person would ever do in front of strangers, let alone inside a coffin, let alone in front of their uncle’s potential fated mate declaration.

The absurdity was so overwhelming that the impact of the reveal barely registered.

Inside their minds, the wolves were having a collective existential crisis.

Ryder, Caesar’s wolf, let out a mournful howl that echoed through Caesar’s skull like a funeral dirge.

’WHY, CAESAR?! WHY?! Out of all the she-wolves in the world—the elegant ones, the sane ones, the ones who don’t emerge from coffins like possessed jack-in-the-boxes—we got THIS as our fated mate?! Her sanity is SUSPECT. I want a refund!’

Caesar, staring at the crouching, arm-waving, ta-da-shouting woman in a coffin, tries to find the silver lining.

’Take the lesson from this, buddy. We will NEVER be bored with a crazy mate.’

Ryder howled in protest. ’THAT’S NOT A COMFORT!’

’And besides,’ Caesar added, a strange, reluctant fondness creeping into his voice, ’there’s nothing we can do about it. She already sexually harassed me before. She has to take accountability for that. That’s just the law.’

’THERE IS NO LAW SAYING THAT!’

’There is now. I’m making it.’

Meanwhile, Leander, Caelian’s wolf, let out a long, weary sigh that carried the weight of a thousand disappointments.

’...at least she’s pretty.’ Leander said, his voice tinged with desperate optimism. ’I just hope her wolf is pretty too. That’s all I ask. Please. Let the wolf be pretty. Let me have this one thing.’

Caelian rubbed his temples internally.

’Your priorities concern me, Leander... but I get what you mean.’

Zephyr, Kyler’s wolf, simply closed his eyes. Not in contemplation. Not in prayer. In denial.

He did not want to be part of this.

He did not want to witness this.

He did not want to acknowledge that this chaos gremlin currently crouching in a coffin like a deranged meerkat was his fated mate.

’I only thought she was an idiot. I didn’t expect her to be... THIS.’

Even Kyler—the Icicle King, the man who had stared down rival Alphas without flinching, the man who had negotiated peace treaties with packs that wanted his head on a pike—had no idea how to respond.

’I also didn’t expect this strange creature to be such a rare species of disaster.’

’Kyler,’ Zephyr’s voice carried a note of long-suffering patience, ’although I didn’t want to witness her insanity... at least stop looking at our mate like she’s an exotic pet you’re considering purchasing.’

’I can’t.’

’Then look away.’

’I can’t do that either.’

’...then I’m going to sleep. Wake me when this is over.’

But amidst all the chaos, one wolf remained calm.

Vander, Caelus’s wolf, watched the scene unfold with an expression that could only be described as... fond.

’She’s... actually cute.’

Caelus’s mental processing ground to a halt.

’...is this kind of eccentric behavior your type?’

’I didn’t know it was either. But apparently, yes.’

’Vander, you’re a noble, mature, dignified wolf.’

’I know.’

’And you like THIS?’

’She’s entertaining. I like entertaining. Sue me.’

Caelus would never, in a million years, say this out loud. He had a reputation to uphold—the stoic, silver-haired strategist, the mind of the Midnight Hollow pack, a man carved from ice and silence.

But in the privacy of his own head, he admitted it.

She’s... weird.

A pause.

But... weirdly cute.

It wasn’t attraction—not yet, not really. It was more like discovering a rare species of flower that screamed instead of blooming, and finding yourself strangely charmed by its audacity.

Fresh. That was the word. This kind of chaos was... refreshing.

Vander hummed in approval inside his head. ’See? I told you. We have a type, apparently.’

’I don’t have a type.’

’You do now. Welcome to the club. Membership fee: one shred of dignity.’

Meanwhile, Azura, still crouched in the coffin like a gargoyle having an identity crisis, scanned the room.

She looked at Caelus—stoic, silent, observing her like she was a math problem he couldn’t solve.

She looked at Caesar—one eyebrow raised, lips twitching like he was fighting a smile and losing.

She looked at Caelian—grinning like a cat who’d just found a new toy that could embarrass itself on command.

She looked at Kyler—stone-faced, arms crossed, radiating the energy of a man questioning every life choice that had led him to this moment.

None of them had reacted.

Just... silence.

Azura felt a pang of disappointment, but she quickly shoved it into a mental drawer labeled "Emotions to Process Never."

Not even a twitch?! Not even a tiny little ’what the hell is wrong with you’?! COME ON, GUYS! I’m performing my HEART out here!

Well. At least the silence gave her time to admire the view.

She let her gaze wander across the four alphas like she was window shopping at a high-end boutique she couldn’t afford but was determined to browse anyway. Caelus’s sharp jawline. Caesar’s broad shoulders. Caelian’s annoyingly perfect smirk. Kyler’s... everything.

Her mental battery charged rapidly.

Alright. Beauty absorbed. Time to exit stage left. Or, you know, exit the coffin.

She placed both hands on the edge of the coffin, ready to make a graceful exit. A dignified exit. An exit that would make them forget everything that had just happened and remember her as a mysterious, elegant woman who definitely did not just ta-da herself inside a box.

She swung one leg over the edge.

Then the other.

And then her foot caught on the lip of the coffin.

Time slowed down. Azura had a brief, crystalline moment to think: Oh no. Oh no no no no—

And then she kissed the floor with the grace of a bag of potatoes falling off a truck.

"Oof—?! OW?!"

Her body went flat on the carpet, arms splayed, legs twisted, dignity shattered into a million tiny pieces that scattered across the hotel room floor like confetti at a funeral.

She lay there.

Face-down.

Defeated.

Her wrist—the one she’d sprained during the scooter incident—should have flared up in pain. But to her surprise, it didn’t. It seemed that even in hibernation, her wolf’s self-healing abilities were still working overtime to keep this disaster of a body functional.

Small mercies.

But the embarrassment? That was not healing. That was metastasizing.

She wanted to run. She wanted to dig a hole. She wanted to cease existing and be reborn as a rock on a quiet mountain somewhere.

But instead, she did what any self-respecting person in a completely humiliating situation would do.

She committed to the bit.

She rolled onto her back, then stretched both arms out to the sides and lifted both legs into the air, wiggling them like an upside-down turtle having a seizure. A stranded mermaid who had given up on the ocean and decided to embrace terrestrial life.

"TA-DAAAAA!!!" she announced to the ceiling, her voice cracking slightly. "You DEFINITELY didn’t expect this plot twist, did you?! SURPRISE!!"

She didn’t even know what she was saying anymore. Words were just sounds. Her life was a performance art piece titled "Woman Who Should Have Stayed In Bed."

And at that exact moment, across four separate minds, the same thought surfaced simultaneously:

...could this woman be a patient who escaped from a mental hospital?

And is her wolf in hibernation because it’s too embarrassed to show its face?

Kyler finally broke his silence. His voice was flat. Dead. A man who had given up trying to understand the universe.

"...get up."

Azura, still flailing on the floor like a dying cockroach, replied with complete sincerity:

"I physically cannot. My dignity has left my body. I am just a shell now. A husk. Please bury me in this position."

Caesar let out a sound that was half-laugh, half-cry.

’Ryder. We’re doomed.’

’I know, Caesar. I know.’
