Transmigrated As A Stepdad In A Fantasy Doujin World
Chapter 72. The Face-Off
Chapter 72: 72. The Face-Off
Brianna reached him first.
She closed the last few steps at a near run and threw her arms around Kael without hesitation, pressing her body against his in an unrestrained hug.
The sudden close hug surprised everyone around them.
Seraphine’s crimson eyes narrowed. Eira’s hand tightened on his sleeve.
Dean and Ryn both froze for a moment.
"Kael, where were you? I didn’t see you for days," Brianna said, rubbing herself against him without any attempt to hide it.
Dean’s rough voice cut in at once with an annoyed tone.
"Enough, Brianna. He’s married. Let him go."
’Well, I already popped two of her green holes, so a hug is not that a big deal, Dean.’
Ryn’s expression darkened with clear jealousy at the open attention she was giving another man.
Tina stepped forward, took Brianna by the arm, and pulled her back with practiced calm.
"It seems she got a little too excited."
Inside, Tina’s thoughts took its own turn.
’I also want to hug him, but it can wait until Ryn and Dean are not present. A simple embrace is not improper, yet doing it so shamelessly in front of them the way this green orc just did is unnecessary.’
Kael took in their gear while the moment settled.
Brianna wore only a light chain-style armor with nothing underneath.
The green curves of her breasts showed through the gaps in several places, and at one open link the edge of a nipple was clearly visible.
Tina’s armor was more modest, layered over a short pair of pants that ended at mid-thigh, her staff resting easily in one hand.
Dean and Ryn both stood in heavier plate that covered them from shoulder to knee.
Ryn’s gaze slid past Kael and settled on Eira and Seraphine with open, lingering lust.
Eira felt the weight of that look and immediately stepped behind Kael, using his body as a shield.
Seraphine met the same stare with cold crimson eyes and held it until Ryn finally looked away and muttered something to divert attention.
Kael’s thought was quiet and cold.
’Just wait until this war. I’ll show you some very good dreams while I fuck your sister and your mother to oblivion.’
A deep, rolling howl rose from the five chained beasts at the edge of the open ground.
The sound carried across the entire field and made several lower-ranked fighters flinch.
The creatures had probably sensed the approaching demon army.
These beasts were known as Warforged Titans.
In past campaigns they had been used both as heavy shock troops and as living mounts capable of carrying rankers across long distances at speed.
Controlling them required either priests or mental-type mages who could bind the animals’ will through sustained focus.
High-ranking fighters could also keep them in line through pure aura pressure, the dense force of their presence enough to make the Titans submit without a formal contract.
Each of the five stood taller than three men, bodies covered in dark, plated hide that looked almost metallic under the fading light.
Long curved horns rose from their skulls.
Thick chains still held them to the iron posts driven deep into the earth, yet the metal already strained as the animals shifted and howled again, the raw sound rolling outward like a warning that the real fight was only moments away.
Lily’s voice cut across the field, louder and sharper than her usual gentle tone.
"Everyone into formation! Move!"
The order snapped the remaining rankers into motion.
Lily, Amber, Lina, and Mira took their positions near the Warforged Titans.
Dean and Ryn moved forward to join the front line of brawlers without looking back.
Brianna stayed at Kael’s side.
Tina turned and climbed the nearest wall stair toward one of the upper bases, staff in hand, ready to take an archer’s role from the height.
Kael gathered Eira and Seraphine and headed toward Amber.
Four of the Titans already carried riders.
Amber sat astride the nearest one, Lily on the next, Lina on the third, and Mira on the fourth.
The fifth beast stood riderless in the center of the group, chains still locked but its head turned toward the darkening tree line.
Amber looked down at them.
"Come up all of you. Sit with me."
Brianna and Seraphine leaped first, landing lightly on the broad plated back.
Kael lifted Eira into a princess carry and followed in a single powerful jump, settling onto the Titan with her still held against his chest.
The special treatment did not go unnoticed.
Both Brianna and Seraphine shot quick, jealous glances at the smaller girl in his arms.
Eira pressed herself tighter against him, soft breasts flattening against his chest as she breathed in.
’Mmh, dad’s scent is so nice.’
Amber glanced back at the four of them once they were settled.
"Stay low when the first wave hits. The Titans can take the initial charge better than any of us on foot."
She started to say more, then her expression changed.
Her eyes narrowed and fixed on the dark trees of jungle ahead.
Her expression become more serious as she sensed something ahead of us.
Across the entire field the noise of the human rankers died away.
Conversations stopped. Armor stopped clanking.
Even the restless shifting of feet went still.
A new sound rose from the trees in its place, a steady, heavy marching that grew louder with every second.
The battlefield itself was a wide, open stretch of packed earth between the thick outer wall of Grayhollow and the edge of the jungle.
The wall ran for miles in both directions, a continuous barrier that protected the town.
Beyond it the jungle stretched north for thousands of miles toward the demon continent.
To the south of Grayhollow lay the heartlands of the Aetherion Empire.
The open ground between the trees and the wall measured at least a full mile in width and stretched even farther along the wall’s length, a natural killing field that had been chosen for exactly this kind of stand.
From the opposite side of that open ground the first trees began to fall.
One after another the tall trunks toppled outward with deep, cracking impacts, clearing a path as something massive forced its way forward through the dense growth.
The marching sound swelled until it filled the air, and every ranker on the field understood that the demon army had finally arrived.
Outside the timber gates of Grayhollow the dust rose in thick clouds as three separate legions of the demon army came together on the open mile of ground.
In the center the Red Horde pushed forward in a solid wave.
These were crimson-skinned fighters with twin horns and heavily built frames.
They moved with raw power, swinging iron hatchets and heavy clubs designed to smash through any wooden barrier.
At the front of their column a large horned general rode a tusked Hell-Boar covered in spikes.
The beast served as a living battering ram, its armored body already aimed at the human lines.
The Red Horde kept tight ranks, their boots hitting the ground in near unison while their deep-red skin caught the last of the evening light.
On the left flank the Mindbreakers advanced more carefully.
Pale lavender-blue lesser succubi walked among them, their short ram-like horns making them easy to tell apart from the crimson troops.
Their hands glowed with flickering violet psychic flames as they prepared to send out waves of pure mental pain strong enough to drop defenders to their knees.
A slender cambion general guided the group from the back of a skinless, six-legged Gloom-Stalker that moved silently over the outer debris.
Even from a distance the air around the Mindbreakers carried a faint, unpleasant pressure that made the nearest human rankers shift without knowing why.
On the right flank the Heartseekers secured the edge of the advance with unnatural accuracy.
Male and female archers with deep brown skin drew bows made from flexible black bone.
Each one had a vertically slit third eye that glowed faintly on their forehead, letting them track heartbeats even through solid cover.
Their scarred warlord directed them from atop a horse-sized Brimstone Charger, an obsidian-scaled reptilian hound that spat small embers into the dirt with every breath.
The Heartseekers did not rush.
Their steps stayed measured, arrows already nocked, third eyes sweeping the human formation with cold precision.
Above the three advancing legions a lesser dragon with dark wings circled in slow, deliberate arcs.
Envy sat casually astride its back, pale skin and sharp, resentful features clear even from a distance.
Long black hair shifted with the wind.
Dark eyes scanned the human formation without urgency.
Among the central ranks of the Brimstone Fleshlings the red-skinned Oni from the dungeon walked with heavy steps, pure black eyes fixed forward, the metal shackles that once coiled around his arms now hanging loose and ready.
The human lines answered the approaching threat with disciplined silence.
The front rank of brawlers locked shields edge to edge, heavy boots planted in the ground.
Behind them the secondary sword line waited with blades drawn, ready to fill any gap the moment the first collision came.
Archers along the flanks and on the wall bases held their strings at half-draw, eyes fixed on the tree line.
In the protected center the mages and the small number of priests stood ready, staffs and crystals already gathering light.
The five Warforged Titans shifted under their riders, plated hide creaking, long horns lowered toward the open ground as if they too understood the weight of the coming charge.
The two armies stood face to face across the open mile of ground.
The air between them felt thick and heavy, every ranker on both sides locked in a tense, waiting silence.
Dust drifted low across the field.
The blue mana barrier above Grayhollow hummed steadily behind the human lines. No one spoke.
No one moved beyond the small adjustments required to keep formation.
Envy’s gaze swept the human ranks once and settled immediately on the handsome blond man seated on the Warforged Titan.
’Why does she always get the best-looking man? I’m not ugly. That pink-haired bitch will come after him too. She’s good at seducing men. I should probably take care of him first.’
