Transformed into a Penguin: My Evolution Penguin System
Chapter 340: They Counted the Fish Before They Counted the Dead
The living pocket moved before anyone reached for a scale.
Nera Holt ordered the slotted floor cleared. Olan Sorn opened the shore cord while the north and south pairs kept their own float lines slack. No rookery worker touched the other line, and neither human claimed the net.

Seven fish remained alive inside the release fold. Nera counted bodies. Olan counted the fold openings. Black-Crown’s pair checked the north gap, and Split-Beak’s pair checked the south gap under separate calls.
The first opening was too narrow for the largest fish. Olan stopped pulling before the body struck the cord.
"Wider by one hand," Nera said.
Olan changed his own shore knot. The north pair lifted its float after Black-Crown’s answer. The south pair held position until Split-Beak answered separately.
The second opening let the largest fish turn without scraping either side.

All seven living fish left under their own movement. None returned to the fold.
Jiang’s head followed the largest one toward the water. Quiet Brood shortened the involuntary turn to0.2s. Jiang chose not to follow, but the empty space where the fish had been stayed painfully interesting.
Emperor Molt had increased his appetite34%. The system had not improved his dignity by the same amount.
Aylin noticed the turn and stepped away from the release lane instead of blocking him. "Do you need distance?"
"I need the scale to finish before I develop opinions about evidence."
She moved the research case farther from the edible board. It was practical help, asked through a question, and it created no touch or command.

The wet gear drained for one minute. Water fell through the boards instead of entering the catch total. Each equipment group was weighed before the edible catch, then weighed again after removal.

Jiang did not receive a system reward for letting six other people finish competent work. The absence improved his opinion of the system by an amount too small to record.
Hessa waited until the living release gate closed before returning one historical packet to the archive floor.
"Food first," she said.
"I noticed," Jiang replied. "History has survived four centuries. Lunch had fifteen minutes."
Conti opened the Earth verifier lane. She carried no database access and no custody authority. The new scene gate came from the physical research packet and the added source review, not from the claimant branch.

The first cleared row named the night of September twentieth, 1615. The University of Nevada, Reno scholarly edition described three Basque whaling ships lost during a severe storm in a fjord near Trekyllisvik.
Near did not become on a specific beach.
Aylin asked why the blank mattered when nobody intended a physical crossing.
Hessa placed the wreck-night row and the later-October row two hand-widths apart. "Because a reconstruction can make distance feel like sequence. Give it one convenient shore, and readers will watch the ships break while the killings begin around them. The records do not support that scene."
Conti added three separate ship-loss counters. None carried a reachable crew label. "A wrong beach would also let the claimant choose which survivors belong to its route."
Jiang looked at the white coast sectors. "Then the blank is part of the map."

The second row held Strakatangi. University of Iceland research supported it as a seventeenth-century whaling-station archaeological site in Strandasysla, north of Holmavik, and institutional material described it as a possible Basque base camp.
The route tried to align Strakatangi with the claimant’s destination.
Hessa blocked the alignment.

The material rows came next.
National Museum evidence supported broad turf-house construction using turf, stone, and limited timber. It supplied no Westfjords floor plan. Period maritime research supported categories such as long coats, wool capes and trousers, wool socks, leather shoes or skin boots, and leather or hide outer garments.
No category became the verified clothing of a named survivor.
Jiang understood the temptation to skip that sentence. His own oilcoat shed water because a living penguin body maintained aligned feathers and oil. Wool and leather were equipment, not a promise that shipwrecked people stood warm and dry after a storm.
"Can the reconstruction show wet clothing?" Paolo asked.
"Only where a selected source says it was wet," Hessa answered. "A wreck makes exposure plausible. It does not inventory every coat."
The first scene would display equipment categories beside blank wearer rows. It would not drape a convenient dry cape over a person the records had not selected.

Jiang looked at six zeros and felt more secure than he would have under one invented gale.
The language row preserved contact without manufacturing a translator. The Basque-Icelandic glossary evidence supported recurring exchange. Surviving images dated around1700 and could not be placed in one1615 survivor’s hand.
The External Alternate Witness tried to attach its `ORIGINAL JIANG TRANSLATED THE RETURN` line to the contact field.
Conti rejected the attachment from Earth. "A later word list supports contact. It does not support that speaker."
Paolo closed the claimant row while leaving the glossary evidence visible. "Paper can preserve that people found words. It cannot volunteer one of them for this conversation."
Aylin declined the empty interpreter role as well. Her knowledge of route language did not become evidence that a stranded Basque speaker and an Icelandic household shared fluent speech in1615.

Nobody had entered it yet.
