Chapter 339: Four Records Entered and None Became the Past

Hessa gave every source its own gate.

Four weighted tabs rested within reach of Jiang’s beak. Blue marked the modern atlas. White marked the English translation packet of Jon Gudmundsson’s critical account. Black marked the scholarly collection. Red marked the Basque-Icelandic glossary images.

Pecking one tab closed the other three.

Conti verified four physical index rows through Signature One. Her database access remained suspended. Paolo witnessed the current check through his sealed key row. Neither acquired the local packets or custody over Jiang.

The three Catch8 alarms stayed visible beside the archive board. North, south, and shore remained unsounded.

Jiang settled breast-down between the same two padded chocks. Pressure60 allowed Abyss Pressure again, but Memory Dive selected no nonphysical source for containment. His feet, flippers, and tail stayed available for post-return checks.

"If one record starts borrowing from another, stop me," he told Hessa.

"I will stop the method. You can keep your literary opinions."

Jiang lowered his beak and pecked blue.

The modern atlas replaced his current senses. Printed coastlines appeared with scale marks and selected modern labels. White water filled every unselected area. No ship, storm, person, year, or spoken word entered the reconstruction.

The provisional Westfjords label did not appear as a point. Jiang followed the printed coast with his attention and found only the labels the packet physically contained. When he tried to narrow one fjord into a reachable shore, the unselected area stayed white.

The atlas could show where modern editors placed names. It could not decide which wreck group, landing, farm, or killing interval the route meant.

Jiang selected the translated account packet.

The reconstruction produced English sentences on separate hanging rows. Each row carried its translation label and the later manuscript-copy chain attached to the packet. No human mouth moved. No voice claimed to be Jon Gudmundsson.

The account condemned collective killing and also preserved allegations of misconduct by some men. It did not turn either statement into Jiang’s own observation.

One row tried to open into a human face. The selected source contained no physical description sufficient to build it. The space stayed white.

"English rows appeared," Jiang said. "A translated sentence is not a man standing in front of me."

Hessa entered both answers separately. The source carried attributed criticism. Jiang’s return carried his current interpretation. Neither answer acquired authority over the other.

The scholarly collection reconstructed tables, citations, and separate event rows. Three ships wrecked in the September twentieth storm row. Later October killings occupied another row. Reported deaths31 and32 remained in adjacent boxes with no average between them.

The claimant branch wrote thirty-two across the white space beneath route-confirmed count.

The number arrived where readers wanted certainty most. Jiang understood the temptation. One clean total would make the panel easier to remember and every later argument easier to win.

It would also make one source disappear.

Memory Dive marked the addition before it could align with the selected source.

"The glossary gets twenty seconds," Jiang said. "The food gets every second after that."

Hessa accepted the limit. Jiang pecked red.

Manuscript images appeared as written word pairs. Their physical image dates stayed around1700. The packet’s research note allowed likely seventeenth-century compilation and recurring Basque-Icelandic contact. It did not place a surviving manuscript, named compiler, or fluent interpreter on a1615 beach.

The sentence carried the External Alternate Witness branch mark before its final word appeared. It matched no selected word pair, handwriting line, copy date, or physical source row.

Jiang left at00:11.

The reconstructed speaker vanished. The blank remained blank after return. Hessa checked the local images. Conti checked their four indexed features through Earth. Both passed4/4. The external sentence stayed outside the source packet and outside Jiang’s memory.

"It chose the blank because a blank cannot contradict it," Conti said.

Paolo tapped the two physical count boxes. "A blank can still refuse to become evidence."

Jiang disliked how much he enjoyed hearing a security officer defend an empty field. Earth had improved in oddly specific places while he was gone.

The north pair arrived first with their rope end and no authority over the south weight. The south pair returned with its separate float line. Nera and Olan brought the shore pocket between them, wet to the elbows and breathing hard.

All three equipment groups stayed physically separate on the counting floor. Water drained through slotted boards. The living pocket still moved, so nobody converted total wet mass into food before release.
