Chapter 319: The Door He Outgrew Still Had Work Behind It

The copper struck stone again.

This time, Aylin counted the delay before the spirit seam answered.

[MATCHED STRIKE2]

[Physical route source1]

[Spirit seam response delay0.6s]

[Shared cause unverified]

Jiang stood outside the twenty-seven-centimeter route with his new breast facing the aperture. Dry recovery had restored mobility, but it had not changed the nine-centimeter difference between his body and the opening.

The sound proved something remained active beyond the comb.

It did not make Jiang smaller.

[LOST ROUTE ACCESS AUDIT]

[Current minimum aperture0.36m]

[Available aperture0.27m]

[Jiang compatibility0]

[Local evidence unresolved1]

[Alternate physical exit0]

[Catch7 return00:04]

[Food0:46]

Aylin laid three test boards on the dry strip. The first covered removable tools. The second covered smaller living bodies. The third covered exterior read-only lines.

"We test in that order," she said. "No living body enters because a tool fails."

"And nobody inherits my old route because they fit it."

[AUDIT TERMS]

[Tool failure creates living duty0]

[Geometric fit creates role0]

[Entry refusal valid]

[Retrieval plan required before insertion]

[Jiang command0 | Aylin command0]

The first tool was an empty reed probe nine centimeters wide and seven high. A removable copper line connected it to Hessa’s exterior counter. The probe carried no record, feather, blood, warmth, food, or system material.

Aylin pushed it with a mechanical wheel from the observer side. Jiang watched the retrieval line instead of touching the route.

[TOOL TEST1]

[Probe0.09x0.07m]

[Living material0]

[Spirit material0]

[Insertion begins]

The probe crossed the first one point two meters without resistance. At the molt-matched comb, five narrow teeth lowered around it.

The tool did not match Jiang’s old body because it had no body at all.

A side channel opened and returned the probe to the entrance.

[Comb passage0]

[Discard return1]

[Damage0 | attachment0]

[Evidence retrieved0]

The second tool carried a flexible contour sleeve built from the archived measurements of Jiang’s pre-molt body. It reproduced width, breast compression, and the old two-degree lateral angle without using skin, feather, soul, or memory.

[Retrieval line1]

The sleeve reached the comb. The teeth touched its outline, paused, and pushed it backward.

[Current molt signature0]

[Comb passage0]

[Return complete1]

[Recorded-body restoration0]

The old shape was insufficient without the living molt that had once answered it. Jiang had paid for a route that was both physically narrow and tied to a body he no longer possessed.

The Adverse Witness pressed against the rejected sleeve.

[ADVERSE WITNESS CONCLUSION11]

[Recorded geometry remains rightful entrant]

[Living carrier required1]

[Carrier assignment authority0]

[Source citation0]

The conclusion tried to turn a failed tool into a reason to put someone alive inside it.

No living assignment appeared in response.

The second board opened.

It listed current adult measurements from both rookery lines without names. Four north adults and six south adults were narrow enough to enter the outer aperture. None carried Jiang’s molt signature, and the comb response to another living body remained unmeasured.

[SMALLER-BODY GEOMETRY]

[Adults fitting outer aperture10]

[Comb compatibility known0/10]

[Retrieval beyond comb0]

[Evidence benefit guaranteed0]

[Living risk unbounded1]

Hessa presented the board separately to Black-Crown and Split-Beak.

Black-Crown refused to nominate a body from the north line. Split-Beak refused separately for the south. Their refusals did not speak for all ten adults, so Hessa opened direct anonymous answers.

All ten refusals returned separately.

[LIVING ENTRY ANSWERS]

[North refusals4/4]

[South refusals6/6]

[Orders0 | replacements0]

[Standing route duty0]

[Jiang burden transferred0]

The system left the route closed.

"That completes the living test," Jiang said.

The old voice behind the seam answered. "It completes nothing. They were afraid."

"Refusal is a result," Aylin said. "Fear does not make the body available."

The third board opened.

An exterior read-only line could carry vibration and optical intervals without carrying a tool past the comb. It could not retrieve objects, move a latch, or accept system material.

Hessa attached one end to the physical route’s entrance plate. Aylin placed the other against a recorder outside the spirit seam. Neither line crossed the white boundary.

[READ-ONLY LINE TEST]

[Physical contact:route entrance1]

[Spirit seam contact0]

[Matter crossing0]

[Signal sequence prepared5]

Hessa tapped one, three, two, four, and one.

The spirit seam answered every group after point six seconds.

[SEQUENCE MATCH]

[Physical groups5/5]

[Spirit responses5/5]

[Delay0.6s stable]

[Amplitude retained18%]

[Mass change0]

[Occupant action unverified]

The old voice spoke after the final group. "I did not make that sound."

Jiang believed the statement enough to test it, not enough to classify the speaker as honest.

Aylin asked the occupant to tap twice while Hessa left the physical plate untouched.

The seam tapped twice. The physical route remained silent.

[REVERSE SEQUENCE TEST]

[Occupant tap2]

[Spirit response2]

[Physical route response0]

[Bidirectional matter0]

[Physical-to-spirit observation1]

The route could produce a spirit echo. The spirit occupant could not strike back through the physical entrance.

That made the matched sounds an observation path, not a door.

Aylin still needed to identify what carried the observation.

She rotated the exterior archive index away from the five counted rooms and placed it on an unused sixth position. The physical contact line remained attached. Hessa tapped two beats, paused, and tapped one.

The physical plate recorded all three beats.

The spirit seam remained silent.

[INDEX ISOLATION TEST1]

[Archive position6 unused]

[Physical beats3/3]

[Spirit responses0/3]

[Matter transfer0]

Aylin restored the index to the five-room route without changing either contact line. Hessa repeated the same two-pause-one sequence.

The seam answered after the stable point-six-second delay.

[INDEX ISOLATION TEST2]

[Archive position5-room route]

[Physical beats3/3]

[Spirit responses3/3]

[Delay0.6s]

[Shared archive mapping1]

[Physical doorway0]

The archive index carried the observation relationship. It did not carry copper, stone, a living body, or authority over the latch.

The occupant tapped once while the index remained restored. The physical plate answered0, confirming the one-way result held even after the mapping was known.

[SHARED CAUSE IDENTIFIED]

[Cause:archive index mapping]

[Physical-to-spirit observation1]

[Spirit-to-physical effect0]

[Route opening0 | evidence retrieval0]

Jiang requested one final physical sequence. Hessa tapped five equal beats, then held the contact plate against the route.

The response returned as five beats followed by one longer drag.

Aylin compared the drag against the archive index.

[ROUTE STATUS READ]

[Indexed record rooms5]

[Readable contents0/5]

[Interior moving contact1]

[Latch state:closed]

[Living occupancy behind route0]

[Memory occupancy unmeasured]

The read-only line could count what remained. It could not open the latch or read the records.

Catch Seven reached its return marker while the status board was still visible.

[CATCH7 RETURN00:00]

[Workers6/6]

[Injuries0 | missing0]

[Catch count pending]

[Food0:42]

The workers had returned. Their living release and edible count still needed completion before the common Food clock could rise.

Jiang left the old route closed.

[LOST ROUTE AUDIT RESULT]

[Removable tools2/2 returned]

[Comb passages0/2]

[Living entries0 | refusals10]

[Read-only route signal1]

[Physical matter transfer0]

[Spirit-to-physical control0]

[Record rooms counted5]

[Contents read0/5]

[Old burden transferred0]

The five record rooms behind the physical route matched five narrow shadows forming behind the spirit seam.
