Transformed into a Penguin: My Evolution Penguin System
Chapter 305: Jiang Chose No Hands and a Better Dive
The declaration panel gave Jiang a human handprint.
Five fingers spread across the glass, each long enough to reach the load-gate latch he had failed to touch. A second outline showed a Polar Warden lifting the forty-two-kilogram bar with room to spare.
His right flipper covered less than half the palm.
"That feels impartial," Jiang said.
Miri Kest remained beside the exterior verification slate. "It may be displaying the limitation with the clearest recent result."
"It may be enjoying itself."
The Unchosen Witness stood behind the comparison mirror. Its clear feet had returned to their smaller geometry, and the borrowed hands were gone. It watched the handprint without touching any of the three source panels.
[SPECIES GOAL DECLARATION]
[Current-body limitation required1]
[Penguin adaptation target required1]
[Declaration owner:Jiang]
[Construct authority0 | witness answer0]
Jiang raised his beak toward the open line.
"Retain my current safe lift below thirty-eight kilograms."
[REJECTED]
[Measured condition:temporary injury state]
[Species limitation required]
His wake-keel wound had already stretched from eight millimeters to one centimeter. Mobility sat at ten percent. Pressure Heart remained above the line that prohibited deliberate diving. The system would let him hate any of those values, but it would not let him pretend damage was anatomy.
Aylin crouched outside the declaration boundary. She did not reach for him.
"You could name the lack of hands," she said.
"I noticed the enormous picture."
"I meant that you could name it without calling it shameful."
Jiang turned enough to see her boots and the edge of her oilcoat. "The gate did not care about my emotional growth. It wanted fingers."
"The gate was built by something selling fingers."
That was the problem.
Polar Warden had solved the lift. Deep-Current Emperor would have reached Nera and Miri faster. Crown Physician could close wounds. White Road Sovereign could carry four people through sealed roads. Every refused body had demonstrated real utility before presenting the behavior it intended to remove.
The handprint was honest about one thing. Jiang would meet more latches he could not operate.
He put his left foot on the declaration strip. Claws found the shallow grooves where no human sole could hold.
"Native grasping hands remain zero," he said. "For Abyssal Emperor Penguin I."
The system did not accept it at once.
[LIMITATION SCOPE CHECK]
[Native form only]
[Alternate Form affected0]
[Tools prohibited0]
[Assistance prohibited0]
[Future evolution tiers bound0]
[Current evolution tier bound1]
"That is narrower than forever," Hessa said.
"Forever is a terrible unit for testing anything."
Aylin looked at the flipper nearest her. "And narrower than saying you will never want hands."
"I want them now. I wanted them at the grate. I will want them at the next door designed by a tall idiot." Jiang pressed the flipper against the human print. "I am choosing which body has to earn the answer."
[LIMITATION DECLARED]
[Abyssal Emperor Penguin I native grasping hands0]
[Humanoid native adaptation eligibility closed for current tier]
[Alternate Form unchanged]
[Reward0 | stat change0 | EP0]
The Polar Warden outline vanished from the declaration panel. Its offer record remained behind the witness with activation0 and payment0, but it no longer occupied Jiang’s current species-goal route.
The loss was practical. He could still use Human Form within its timer. He could still ask for a person, rope, lever, harness, or tool. He could not complete this evolution tier by growing a convenient pair of native hands and calling the result a better penguin.
The second declaration line opened beneath his feet.
[PENGUIN ADAPTATION TARGET]
[Select one measurable function]
[Cold retention | underwater propulsion | dive circulation | feather recovery | colony call]
Jiang read the list twice.
Cold retention would help with fuel at zero. Feather recovery would protect the exposed wake keel. Underwater propulsion offered speed without Deep-Current’s permanent payments. A stronger colony call might reach hundreds without borrowing leadership.
Each answer could keep someone alive.
Nera’s hand was wrapped because his current body had reached the grate and failed to release it. That failure kept trying to turn the choice back toward strength.
Miri tapped the ordinary slate with one fingernail. "The requested target is a function, not a finished skill. Choosing it does not prove you can survive the test."
"I gathered that from the system’s long history of generosity."
He studied the route beyond the gate. The deeper rail ended at a low flooded throat. Black water pressed against a clear seal thirty-four centimeters high. A penguin could enter. A Polar Warden could not.
His Pressure Heart read sixty-four percent.
Deliberate diving remained prohibited above sixty.
Deep-Current Emperor had offered to lower submerged heart load to forty-six by removing three behaviors. Jiang had refused the body, but the measured need remained. Speed would only deliver him to the bottom faster if his heart could not manage the descent.
"Dive circulation," he said.
Three new lines requested precision.
[TARGET FUNCTION INCOMPLETE]
[Preserve which tissues?]
[Restrict which tissues?]
[Required recovery condition?]
"It wants me to design blood now."
"It wants to know what success means before it sells you an approximation," Aylin said.
"That is almost responsible. I distrust it more."
He considered the way cold had entered his feet before his core, the way Pressure Heart turned every hard effort into a shared countdown, and the way his flippers still drove him through water when walking hurt.
"Preserve flow to brain and heart," Jiang said. "Restrict the outer muscles during a measured descent, without losing the return stroke. Recovery means I surface under my own power with no lasting tissue damage and no other body carrying the oxygen cost."
[TARGET DECLARED]
[Provisional name:Selective Dive Circulation]
[Preserve:brain | heart]
[Restrict:peripheral muscle]
[Recovery:independent surface return]
[Permanent tissue damage permitted0]
[Transferred living cost permitted0]
[Current progress0/3 proofs]
No warmth entered his blood. Pressure remained sixty-four. Cold remained zero of forty-seven. The system granted no hidden breath, no stronger stroke, and no point for choosing an attractive sentence.
Instead, the flooded throat unlocked.
[EARNED EVOLUTION ROUTE OPEN]
[Proof1:controlled restriction]
[Proof2:functional return stroke]
[Proof3:independent recovery]
[Field qualification requires Pressure Heart60% or lower]
[Current Pressure Heart64%]
[Jiang entry:prohibited]
The clear seal withdrew four centimeters and stopped.
Black water pushed into the gap. The comparison rail dipped beneath it, passed through the narrow throat, and continued beyond the reach of exterior light. Small marks along the rail matched the Unchosen Witness’s clear feet.
The witness approached the water.
"Stay behind the line," Jiang said.
It stopped because the route line closed, not because it obeyed him.
[USEFUL EXTERNAL CONSTRUCT]
[Prior task scope complete]
[New cooperation required]
[Current choice0 | command relation0]
Hessa moved the verification slate between the witness and the flooded gap. "Any task beyond this point needs a fresh bounded answer and an ending condition. Its unsupported conclusions remain unsupported."
The witness compared Jiang’s prohibited-entry line with its own material body. Living pressure load did not apply to seven pieces of clear construct material. It could fit the throat. It could follow the rail. It could also return with an archive result and arrange the cause any way it pleased.
A new offer appeared on the glass.
[DEEPER BODY ARCHIVE INSPECTION]
[Eligible entrant:Unchosen Witness]
[Maximum interval06:00]
[Reversible trail required]
[Source citation requirement0]
[Exterior verifier required1]
[Archive payment displayed after first contact]
"There it is," Jiang said. "The price waits underwater."
Aylin stood and read the six-minute line. "You cannot follow at sixty-four."
"And the thing that can follow has already decided evidence is optional."
Six minutes offered enough time to reach an archive he had just made relevant. It also offered enough time for the labyrinth to teach the witness another useful mistake.
Seven minutes had passed.
Food stood1:36. Fuel remained0. Residents remained133. Catch5 stayed complete with workers ended6/6 and command0. Holders remained4 with western vacancy1 and Huddle consent0. Camp occupants and entrants remained0.
Jiang’s EP0, Pressure64%, Cold0/47, mobility10%, wound1.0cm, feather loss4, water deficit0.11L, Weather Wake0/residue0, and molt65% remained unchanged. Native grasping hands0 became bound for Abyssal Emperor Penguin I. Selective Dive Circulation opened at proofs0/3 with field entry prohibited above Pressure60.
Unchosen Witness remained material7/geometry5/5/alternatives4/outcomes1, source citation0, unsourced conclusions2/released2/supported0, and authority0. The archive interval remained unaccepted.
Jiang had chosen the body that needed the answer.
The only entrant who could fetch it did not need the truth.
