Transformed into a Penguin: My Evolution Penguin System
Chapter 296: The Better Swimmer Could Not Come Back Through the Camp
Deep-Current Emperor looked like the penguin Jiang might have chosen if the world contained only water.
He requested its complete terms under a preview-only answer. Both exterior releases remained staffed. Camp Site1 kept its awake twelve-minute limit, and the composite preview received six minutes inside Zone Two.
Aylin stayed outside her branch. The body offer belonged to Jiang, but Leth watched for any line that tried to make her relationship one of its physical components.
[COMPOSITE PREVIEW]
[Designation:Deep-Current Emperor]
[Activation0 | payment authorization0 | duration maximum06:00]
Jiang entered the native route on living entry12.
Camp Site1 remained empty when he reached it. The two broken brace rails, folded linen, and marker slate stayed in place. The witness cup remained sealed at7%.
Zone Two opened on his separate current answer.
[ZONE TWO ENTRY2]
Muscle, Pressure, and Speed leaned inward. Their separate beam outlines joined in the chamber center and built a penguin.
It stood lower through the breast than Jiang’s current emperor body and longer from beak to tail. Its flippers widened near the root, then narrowed into rigid steering edges. Dense black oilcoat covered the shoulders and back. The white breast, gold neck marks, and individual throat-call structures remained recognizable.
The body kept flippers instead of growing hands.
No human face waited beneath the beak.
The form was not punishment disguised as anatomy. It was a serious aquatic species branch.
Its four retained recognition channels covered individual throat timing, face and breast pattern, stance, and short-range contact call. Black-Crown and Split-Beak could still identify Jiang through the traits they currently used. Recognition did not make the branch a rookery office, merge either leader, or guarantee that they would accept what its altered behavior did after recognition.
[DEEP-CURRENT EMPEROR BODY]
[Penguin body continuity:retained]
[Oilcoat retained | emperor feet retained | rookery call recognition4/4]
[Hands0 | Human Form replacement0 | humanoid posture0]
The body terms listed its gains next.
[Aquatic acceleration:+72%]
[Sustained swim output:+49%]
[Submerged pressure tolerance:+44%]
[Effective Pressure Heart load while submerged64->46%]
[Weather Wake water-path efficiency:+31%]
[Feather Mail underwater turn lock:-4s]
The body could cross flooded distance that Jiang currently treated as prohibited. Below water, Pressure Heart would fall beneath60 and permit deliberate cardiac use. Weather Wake would follow a cleaner, longer body wake. Feather Mail’s automatic lock would release four seconds earlier during an underwater turn.
Those were not decorative numbers.
A Deep-Current Emperor could reach trapped divers, fight inside submerged structures, carry lines through pressure channels, and survive water that turned Jiang’s present heart into the first emergency.
The chamber rotated the body onto dry stone.
[Surface mobility10->6%]
[Minimum dry turn radius:2.4m]
[Wake-keel wound retained1.0cm]
[Standing recovery after sustained swim:+38s]
[Current0.27m comb compatibility0]
[Minimum return aperture0.41m]
The longer breast and steering flippers that made water movement efficient became a liability on land. Jiang would need more than twice his current turning space. His wound remained. After a serious swim, the body required thirty-eight additional seconds before stable dry movement.
It could enter Zone Two through the center transformation ring.
It could not return through the route Jiang had used to reach it.
The body offered a separate flooded exit descending beyond the six beams. That shaft had pressure depth, destination, and exterior release unmeasured. Accepting first and inspecting later would trade two proven returns for one unknown water route.
The shaft also had no measured air pocket. Deep-Current anatomy could remain submerged longer and tolerate more pressure, but neither advantage proved the destination contained breathable space, a surface opening, or anyone able to pull from the far side. Better diving converted an unknown route into a survivable risk, not a known return.
[Alternate Deep-Current exit1]
[Depth unmeasured | destination unmeasured | exterior answer0]
[Camp Site1 access after transformation0]
No destination answer appeared there.
The appetite cost appeared beside the molt.
[Current molt65%]
[Projected molt appetite demand:+52%]
[Oilcoat closure requires remaining normal growth25% plus deep-current keel growth14%]
[Current food reserve sufficient for transformation interval:FALSE]
The body preserved penguin anatomy by demanding penguin fuel. Its longer keel added four percentage points beyond Jiang’s current ten-percent wake-keel remainder. The refuge had food again, but not enough to support a new molt without taking a larger share from133 residents.
No starvation penalty was hidden. The form simply required more fish than the current route could spare.
Then Zone Two named the three behavioral payments combined from Muscle, Pressure, and Speed.
[Permanent payment1:remove refusal to accept assigned living burdens without current answer]
[Permanent payment2:remove emergency consent boundary learned from Aylin’s first reversion question]
[Permanent payment3:remove chosen affiliation behavior that waits for separately led rookery exits]
[Memory content retained | behavioral force removed]
[Return of payments0 | substitute record0]
Deep-Current Emperor retained rookery call recognition4/4. Jiang would know Black-Crown and Split-Beak, understand their separate leadership, and hear every refusal.
He would stop waiting for those answers when speed made waiting inefficient.
He would remember that Aylin once asked before lifting him. In an emergency, the stronger swimmer would treat current need as sufficient permission. He would remember that assigned burdens required living answers and accept them anyway when his body could carry more.
The form did not erase relationships.
It made their limits nonbinding.
Jiang asked whether the payments were charged once for permanent transformation or once per aquatic interval.
[Transformation type:permanent species branch]
[Payments charged once and permanent]
[Future Deep-Current strength use requires no additional memory tariff]
That made the offer more honest than a recurring rental. Three permanent losses bought a permanent, coherent body rather than ninety seconds of borrowed output.
It also made refusal harder.
Jiang could imagine a world where the flooded exit led beneath a trapped rookery and six seconds mattered more than every rule listed outside. The body might save lives his current form could not reach. Its land weakness was not moral failure. Its hunger was not vanity. Both were ordinary species costs.
The unacceptable part was not that the body specialized.
It was that specialization required Jiang to become easier to deploy.
He declined the permanent branch.
[DEEP-CURRENT EMPEROR DECLINED]
[Offer record retained | activation0 | payments0]
[Current body unchanged]
Zone Two did not destroy the outline. It moved the refused body to a glass recess where later outcomes could be compared against it.
Another recess opened on the opposite wall.
[POLAR WARDEN PREVIEW AVAILABLE]
[Hands and upright reach retained by recurring load tariff]
Jiang did not request the second body’s terms under the first offer interval.
He left Zone Two at05:21 and crossed Camp Site1 without changing inventory.
[ZONE TWO RETURN2]
Jiang returned through the native throat at11:42.
[LIVING RETURN12 | injury0 | body material0]
Twelve minutes had passed.
Food stood1:16. Fuel remained0. Residents remained133. Cala’s compact answer retained0:33. Jiang’s labyrinth entries/returns stood12/12. Aylin branch entries/returns stood3/3. Zone Two entries/returns stood2/2.
Deep-Current activation0, payment0, offer record1. Current EP0, Pressure64%, Cold0/47, mobility10%, wound1.0cm, feather loss4, water deficit0.11L, Weather Wake storage0/residue0, and molt65% remained unchanged.
The better swimmer waited behind glass.
Its unknown flooded exit pointed away from the only camp Jiang knew he could leave.
