Chapter 289: The Six Black Seeds Tried to Close the Confluence

  • Next Chapter

All six hooks pulled.

Maelin’s hall did not move.

Everything around it did.

Salt-Suture’s drowned road bent upward through the starwater. Across the flood, the cloudshear’s broken wing dragged sideways. Borrowed legs hauled the road serpent across the hall’s opened roof.

Beyond the rain, three approaching roads curved toward the same center.

Around Jiang, the confluence folded like a fist learning where its fingers belonged.

He slid across Maelin’s new floor as the overturned hall tipped again.

Raska stopped him with one bare foot.

"I am running out of dry ways to catch you."

Jiang dug his claws into a root seam. "Try having more feet."

Six stolen cries answered from the road serpent.

Raska looked through the roof opening. "I withdraw the suggestion."

Its black seed pulsed beneath the jaw.

From the flood, the cloudshear’s seed answered, followed by the brinehart’s deeper beat. Three more pulses came through roads still hidden behind rain and bone.

Each answer tightened a red hook.

Kessa stood on what had once been Maelin’s wall. Water poured past her knees and into the open founder roots.

"Where do they meet?"

Aylin pointed toward the shed dorsal plate.

Her finger followed each load in turn. Salt-Suture’s hook ran through a flood channel. An inward stone feather carried the cloudshear’s. Screaming grafts carried the serpent’s.

Three farther hooks had already pierced the joints of their approaching roads.

None of the seeds needed to move the same kind of body. They needed every road to pull toward one shared hollow.

Dead bone had rolled above the flooded hall. Its master seed opened along the middle, not like a flower, but like a gill cut into something that had never breathed.

Red water entered through six narrow channels.

It left through none.

"Inside that vent," Aylin said.

Kessa looked at the slit, then at Jiang.

"No one enters that."

Jiang had not volunteered.

That did not improve her answer.

"Cut the master seed from here," Kessa said.

Aylin shook her head. "Every hook is carrying part of it. Cut one side blindly and the other five close the wound."

"Then make one road pull wrong."

Neither woman looked toward Tavra until the Salt-Suture channel began to glow.

Borrowed legs drove the serpent into the hall.

One grafted hoof punched through the remaining ceiling root. A hooked paw followed and clawed at empty air while its red thread dragged the limb toward the master seed.

Beneath the serpent’s jaw, its rider kept cutting.

His knife reached a taloned graft. The talons opened around his wrist instead of the hall, holding still long enough for him to find the thread.

Then the cage pulled.

The serpent’s body twisted.

Rider and talons vanished beneath its jaw.

Before anyone saw whether the cut landed, the graft vanished from view.

A red channel swelled through the drowned Salt-Suture road.

Every surviving saltglass house rose from the silt. Broken bells rang as the current fitted roofs back against walls and walls against their old bridge.

For one breath, Salt-Suture came home.

The rider who had tried to close Tavra’s flood wheel stared down through Maelin’s open roof.

"The road remembers us."

Raska did not release Jiang.

"It remembers the hook."

The rebuilt bridge turned toward the master seed.

Its houses locked together and became a cage wall. Doors opened inward. Flood channels narrowed around the brinehart’s throat.

Tavra surfaced between the antlers.

Her loose braid clung across her face. One shoulder hung lower after the saltglass strike, but her shell knife remained in her hand.

"Cut the red vein!" Raska called.

The Salt-Suture rider caught her speaking shell.

"If she cuts it, the road cannot find us again."

"It found you now."

"That is our home."

Below him, a carved shell cup spun through a window that had rebuilt around it.

Tavra saw the cup.

She also saw the flood channel closing around the brinehart’s left gill.

The host struck the new saltglass wall with its antlers.

Red pressure forced the wall back into shape.

Tavra put her knife against the glowing vein where it ran beneath the road.

The rider in Maelin’s hall went pale.

"Tavra, do not do this."

She looked up at him.

"I drowned my room before you drowned the host."

The rider could have leaped for the channel rope. Instead, he tore the small bridge bell from his collar and closed it inside his fist.

Two Salt-Suture children had been watching the rebuilt houses. He moved them behind Hest before Tavra’s knife came down.

Tavra cut the glowing vein.

Salt-Suture did not break cleanly.

Its returning road pulled one way while the brinehart’s flood pulled another. Saltglass stretched until every house became a bright, thin wound.

The carved cup disappeared first.

The remaining roofs followed.

Bridge bells gave one ruined note and burst.

Water rushed through the severed vein against the red current.

The entire cage shuddered.

Blue road-light vanished from every Salt-Suture collar in the hall. The rider opened his hand, but the little bridge bell no longer knew which way home lay.

No replacement road appeared.

No hidden bridge preserved what Tavra had cut.

One hook loosened from the dead dorsal plate.

Not enough to open a road.

Enough to open the gill-shaped vent.

Jiang pulled free of Raska’s foot.

Kessa stepped into his path.

"You did not answer me."

"You answered for yourself already."

"It was a good answer."

"Keep this cloth warm."

He pushed his breast against the strip of dry cloth hanging from Aylin’s belt.

She understood and tore it free.

The cloth would not warm him now. It could keep the wet founder root from closing behind his tail.

Aylin wrapped it once around that root.

"No second pull," she said.

Their old boundary, stripped to the part that mattered.

Jiang tapped her wrist once with his beak.

Kessa still had room to block the vent with her body.

She stepped aside instead.

"I am not calling this fate if you die in there," she said.

"Call it bad timing."

"I have been doing that all day."

Jiang dove through the opening.

Starwater closed over his clear inner eyelids.

He used the working flipper and his stronger foot. The unstable leg trailed close to his body, and every kick dragged cold across the damaged coat under his shoulder.

Tavra’s severed road current struck him from the side.

Red pressure met it from ahead.

The two currents did not cancel. They twisted around one another, making a narrow rolling path toward the vent.

Jiang entered already moving.

No keel skill turned him.

His own webbed foot did.

The master seed’s slit tightened around his back. Dead bone scraped the working flipper, forcing it closed.

He continued with his feet and beak.

His lungs had not recovered from the brinehart’s throat. Pressure gathered beneath his breastbone, urging him to spend air before the vent gave him any place to surface.

Behind him, the founder root began crushing Aylin’s cloth.

He would not get a gentle retreat.

Inside, six root channels joined around an empty center.

They were building a place for him.

Copied white feathers lined the hollow. Breathwood’s stolen pattern continued down every channel, waiting to complete itself against his living coat.

Each seed sent a different pain through the roots. The brinehart’s channel clenched like a held breath. Stone ground inside the cloudshear’s. Borrowed joints kicked through the serpent’s line.

The cage had translated six wounded bodies into six reasons Jiang should surrender his own.

Jiang touched none of them.

He braced his stronger foot on the slick inner wall and drove along the red flow.

The current reached his shoulder.

It slid across the intact oilcoat, just as it had beside the brinehart and beneath Saela’s hook.

The movement was passive and useful, but it was not his.

Ahead, the channels narrowed. If he kept the same angle, the red pressure would carry him into the feather-lined hollow and call the arrival a choice.

Jiang opened his working flipper as far as the vent allowed.

The edge caught moving water.

His body began to roll.

Pain bit through the shoulder before he reached the angle he needed.

He could let the current finish the turn.

Instead, he kicked across it.

The stronger webbed foot drove down. His beak struck the opposite root and held for one ugly heartbeat.

Jiang turned his black back against the red flow.

Water fought the direction his feathers naturally shed it.

The foreign mark tried to settle.

Still, Jiang kept moving.

Red light crawled toward skin exposed beneath the old scar.

Jiang rolled harder, forcing the current over intact coat before it could find the damaged edge.

At last, the mark slipped.

So did the oil beneath it.

A dark sheen tore from his feathers and spun into the red channel.

Cold reached the skin at once.

Not the slow cold of soaked plumage. This had teeth. It sank through the stripped shoulder and closed around the joint.

His working flipper stopped halfway through the next stroke.

Jiang kicked before panic could make the choice for him.

The red mark left his body.

It struck the copied feathers inside the hollow and embedded there instead.

For the first time, Jiang had made it shed where he chose.

The System appeared only after the oil was gone.

[Physical proof accepted: one contacted foreign current shed from Jiang’s moving submerged coat.]

[Evolution refinement offered: Countercurrent Oil I | Cost: EP1]

[While fully submerged and already moving, shed one contacted directional current or route-mark from your own feathers.]

[The contacted coat section loses protective oil until restored by preening and true rest.]

[Cannot free another body, remove an embedded seed, start movement, carry, heal, warm, or reveal a route.]

[Accept Countercurrent Oil I now?]

Jiang read the cost while his stripped shoulder went numb.

The refinement could shed a current from his feathers. It could not remove the master seed around him, cut Tavra’s hook, free the cloudshear, or make his injured flipper move.

Even purchased, it would need Jiang moving before it could help.

The cage was trying to take that condition away.

Outside the vent, Tavra’s countercurrent weakened.

Salt-Suture’s last road light went dark.

The loosened hook caught again.

All six seeds pulled.

Copied feathers closed over the vent behind Jiang.

The confluence became a cage with him inside it.

The offer waited for his answer.
