Chapter 288: Stone Wings Fell Inward Over Maelin’s Hall

  • Next Chapter

Stone wings did not flap above Maelin’s hall.

They folded into the creature wearing them.

Jiang saw the first grey point punch through the cloudshear’s breast. Another followed beside it, then a whole fan of stone feathers drove inward from both wings.

The flying host tried to open wider.

Its own new bones stabbed deeper.

Black blood sheeted across the white belly as the cloudshear fell toward the hall.

"Open the roof," Kessa said.

Hest stared at her.

Water already filled his boots. The cracked founder rib bowed across his shoulders, and every breath made the split undercroft wall spit more starwater.

"That is the roof," he said.

"Then teach it to move."

Kessa hooked both hands beneath Maelin’s oldest ceiling root.

Valea cut beside her.

Above them, families dragged children away from the widening seam. Salt-Suture riders helped Bone Orchard fighters move the injured, though several still watched one another’s knives.

Jiang stood where Raska had set him.

Cold water ran from his belly. Along the bare seam below his Wake Scar, soaked feathers left his skin raw and numb.

He wanted one breath without something falling.

The confluence declined his request.

A blow struck the underside of the hall.

Borrowed feet scraped along dead road bone below them.

Jiang looked through the split wall and saw a serpent climbing out of the green water. Its body moved in one long ripple. The legs stitched along its flanks did not.

One paw clawed backward.

A hoof kicked at empty water.

Two narrow talons fought each other for the same hold.

Red thread ran from every borrowed joint to a black seed behind the serpent’s jaw.

The creature opened its mouth, but the sound came from the grafted legs. Six frightened cries broke loose at once.

Raska heard the grafts cry.

Her face changed before she covered it with anger.

"Close the lower channel."

She caught the flood wheel Tavra had forced open and leaned her whole body into it.

Far below, an antler rose through the green dark.

Tavra clung to it with one arm. The brinehart’s gills opened beneath her, drawing the same current Raska was trying to cut.

"Leave it," Tavra shouted through a speaking shell.

"My hall is sinking."

"My host is breathing."

"Your host is leaving."

"So is your hall."

Raska hauled the wheel harder.

Tavra climbed along the antler, reached a hanging channel rope, and wrapped it around her bleeding forearm.

Neither woman looked at Jiang.

That made the choice honest.

The cloudshear struck Maelin’s outer roots.

Stone screamed against dead bone. One inward wing tore through the upper floor while the other caught on a detached road span.

The whole hall lurched.

Jiang’s unstable leg went out from under him.

Aylin caught him against her shin rather than lifting him. Her other hand held a strand of Natural Essence against the ceiling root Valea was cutting.

"It is trying to turn," she said.

Jiang looked up through the broken floor.

Aylin was painfully right.

The cloudshear’s living wing muscles pulled toward open water. Its stone feathers answered the black seed instead, forcing its body toward the shed master seed.

Someone still rode between those wings.

A woman hung from a torn saddle strap with stone dust packed into her hair. Her left arm ended at the elbow. With the other, she hammered at the feather piercing the cloudshear’s lung.

Two Stone-Pinion riders behind her pulled steering lines toward Maelin’s hall.

"Saela!" one shouted. "Leave the lung. We have the key!"

Saela Dorran looked down.

Her gaze passed over Kessa and Aylin before fixing on Jiang.

A red hook uncoiled from the cloudshear’s saddle. Its point carried a ring lined with short white feathers.

Short white penguin feathers.

Jiang recognized his own pattern before the hook moved.

Breathwood had copied it into the world. The Armada had learned how to grow bait from the copy.

The hook drove through the broken floor.

Aylin’s Natural Essence tightened.

"Your choice," she said.

She could have burned it aside before he answered.

Still, she did not.

Jiang shoved off her ankle.

His working flipper opened just enough to turn his breast. The hook missed the Wake Scar and scraped along intact black feathers.

Red pressure slid with it.

For one dangerous breath, the oilcoat sent the mark toward his tail.

Then the ring snapped shut around empty water.

Jiang caught its feather lining in his beak.

The white fibers tasted of old salt and Breathwood sap. Nothing living remained in them.

He planted his stronger foot against the floor and tore backward.

The hook tried to follow the shape of his coat.

His bad leg folded.

Raska released the channel wheel long enough to kick the hook’s shaft.

"He said no," she told the riders above.

"It cannot hear him!" one rider called.

Saela drove her hammer into the inward feather again.

"I can," Saela answered.

The stone feather cracked.

The cloudshear screamed in its own voice.

Its body twisted toward the open water beneath the hall.

That water still belonged to two needs.

Raska could close it and keep Maelin’s damaged floor above the flood.

Tavra could hold it open for the brinehart’s gills.

Now the falling cloudshear needed it to survive the drop.

Jiang released the false feathers from his beak.

They spun against the current and stuck to the torn part of his coat.

No System offer appeared.

For once, that was good.

He had not chosen how the red pressure moved. He had only refused where someone else wanted it to end.

Below, the road serpent rammed its borrowed legs into Maelin’s lower roots.

One human rider straddled its neck. Another hung beneath the jaw, trying to cut red thread from a stolen paw without cutting the living graft.

Their road arrived behind them in loops of black reed and wet chain.

Every loop tightened around the hall.

"Kessa, move it!" Hest shouted.

The ceiling root would not move while the hall’s old founder joints held it.

Kessa looked at the names carved into the beam.

Maelin Oss had cut the first one. Later guild leaders had added their own until the root became a history no one could lift without asking the dead.

Kessa buried her knife beneath Maelin’s name.

For a moment, her hand stopped.

Then she cut the whole carved section free.

The upper roof opened.

Rain, black blood, and a falling cloudshear entered Maelin’s hall.

Hest threw himself sideways with the founder rib.

Valea severed the roots behind him before they could drag his spine into the wall.

Aylin dropped beside Jiang and covered him with her shoulder as stone feathers passed through the gap.

They did not strike.

The falling cloudshear did.

Its broken wing drove through the opened roof, across the empty upper floor, and out through the undercroft seam.

Maelin’s hall began to roll.

Myrn lowered her head beneath the tilting side.

Her injured front leg shook before she touched it.

Sivra ran between Myrn and the falling wall.

"You hold this, you lose the leg."

Myrn shoved her muzzle against Sivra’s chest.

The mount could have moved her.

Instead, Myrn stepped back.

She let Maelin’s hall fall.

People screamed as the floor turned beneath them.

Kessa screamed over them.

"Go with the fall!"

Bone Orchard fighters pulled instead of bracing. Salt-Suture riders broke the remaining glass partitions. Families slid across wet boards toward the side that had become the floor.

Myrn charged the empty road span caught beneath the cloudshear’s other wing.

Her good shoulder struck first.

The dead span rolled out from under Maelin’s roots and carried the trapped stone wing with it.

Freed of that anchor, the cloudshear dropped through the open undercroft.

Raska still held the flood wheel.

Tavra still held the rope.

Their eyes met across the water.

Raska let the wheel go.

The channel opened fully.

Starwater swallowed the cloudshear before its stone breast hit the serpent below.

The plunge ripped Tavra from her rope.

Saela cut her own saddle strap and fell after the host.

For an instant, she passed Jiang close enough to touch him.

A feather ring remained tied around her wrist.

She tore it loose with her teeth and spat it into the flooded hall.

"Stone-Pinion has no key," she said.

Then she vanished after the cloudshear.

Its body sank through green water.

Real wings tried to spread around inward stone. One opened enough to turn the host away from Maelin’s broken roots.

The other could not.

Saela reached it and pressed her remaining hand against living skin, not a steering line.

Below them, Tavra found the brinehart’s antler again.

Raska watched both riders disappear.

"I hate every guild at this confluence," she said.

Hest coughed water. "You are in one."

"That is why I began with mine."

Jiang might have laughed if his chest had not hurt.

The hall settled on its side.

No roof remained above them. The opened founder root hung into the flood, stripped of Maelin’s carved name.

Kessa picked the broken section out of the water.

She held it once, then passed it to a child who needed something solid.

The road serpent climbed over the drowned cloudshear.

Its borrowed paws found purchase where the stone wings had broken the hall. Red thread drew every leg toward a different angle, wrenching the serpent’s long spine between them.

Jiang saw the rider beneath its jaw cut one thread.

A black paw stopped screaming.

The remaining grafts pulled harder.

Above the confluence, four distant red lanterns brightened.

The brinehart’s seed answered from below.

The cloudshear’s seed answered inside its bleeding breast.

The serpent’s seed answered beneath its jaw.

Three more replies came through approaching roads.

The shed master seed opened on the dead dorsal plate.

Six red hooks shot outward.

One caught the drowned Salt-Suture road.

One pierced the cloudshear’s broken stone wing.

One buried itself in the serpent’s borrowed legs.

The others found roads still hidden beyond the rain.

All six lines drew tight around Maelin’s hall.

The confluence began to fold into a cage.
