Chapter 275: Maelin’s Hall Flew With Its Heart Still Empty

  • Next Chapter

The heartseed took Maelin’s place without knowing how she had stood.

Red fibers pulled the founder ribs shut. Hard and eager, the wounded wing drove toward the Armada lantern. The sound wing fought the turn, and between them the guildhall began to roll.

Jiang clung to the infected joint with both feet.

Pain had left the new scar along his keel and become something worse. It admitted the cold without argument. Each time his belly lifted from the warm red tissue, the road-current reached through his feathers and took whatever heat Aylin’s coat had left him.

Starcurrent Keel did nothing. He had made his one crossing, and the locked adaptation remained as useful as a door painted on a wall.

Kessa’s severance blade struck through the far wall of the moving pocket.

Mothglass entered behind Jiang, where she had cut a path after the fleeing core. Red tissue tightened around the blade and shoved it back. Kessa caught the hilt before it spun into open dark.

"Again!" Jiang called. In answer, the heartseed used his stolen voice.

Its copied beat moved through the founder ribs, across the infected wing, and into his breast. His lungs tried to follow. Its pause came too early. Jiang coughed against the red flesh and nearly lost his sound foot.

High-root pulled firm behind his coat.

Aylin had felt the slip. She did not drag him away. High-root held only enough of his weight for the webbed foot to spread again.

"He is still there," she shouted.

"I know where there is," Kessa said. "I need to know which part is him."

Jiang struck the tissue twice with his beak.

Jiang’s first knock disappeared into the heartseed’s rhythm. His second landed during its false pause and reached the blade as a hard tremor.

Kessa shifted the edge toward it.

Kessa’s next cut opened red tissue instead of living black glass.

Warm fluid burst across Jiang’s belly. For an instant, the widening Wake Scar drank the heat and lost it just as quickly. His legs shook, but the cut gave him a view into the founder wound.

The heartseed had no human heart inside it.

White roots turned around a red sac, squeezing stolen water through clear tubes that had already joined the hall’s flight channels. Every pulse sent the wounded wing toward the lantern. Every resisting stroke from the sound wing tore one of those tubes wider.

The seed was not steering with knowledge.

It was pulling on the first living answer it had found.

Across the bay, the sound flight wall buckled.

Hest set the bent yoke beneath its lowest rib. The wall came down anyway, forcing him onto one knee. Valea drove a wrapped barb through the yoke’s split end and into an empty scale hole, pinning the brace before it crushed his shoulder.

Three glasskites remained beneath the wall.

One darted through the gap over Hest’s back. The second caught a clear wingtip under a broken stall rail. Valea left the barb in place and went flat on her stomach, reaching with the wrapped end of another piece rather than grabbing the panicked creature.

The kite bit the wrapping, held on, and came free with it.

The third chose the higher wall and climbed over Hest’s head.

"I am beginning to dislike birds," Hest said through his teeth.

The stormmew on Kessa’s shoulder bit the top of her ear.

"You said that where they could hear."

Kessa drove the blade deeper. Outside, Myrn passed the sound wing in a falling turn. Her injured vanes barely opened. Her good wing struck the hall’s outward current and forced it against the heartseed’s pull.

Sivra stood at the hinge above her.

Red fibers had crossed the sound wall’s lowest joint, making Myrn’s stroke carry only part of its force into the hall. Sivra put her shortened name shard beneath those fibers. The old guild mark opened nothing. Its broken edge still cut when she leaned her body onto it.

"I can free the hinge," she told Myrn. "You choose what you do with it."

Myrn sawed one armored shoulder through the current and struck again.

The red fibers tightened over Sivra’s shard.

She pulled sideways rather than trying to overpower them. The fibers cut themselves against the broken name that no longer commanded either mount or hall.

The sound wing opened, and its full stroke ran through the guildhall.

Inside the founder wound, living clear tubes expanded around the borrowed heart. The red sac loosened for one breath as the hall drew flight from its own wing.

Jiang put both feet on it.

His webbing spread over the slick curve. He could not grip it, so he used the part of a penguin built to shove water backward. Toes wide, legs tucked, keel braced against the founder rib, he kicked.

The sac moved toward Kessa’s cut.

White roots caught around his unstable leg.

One curled above the old bite. Another slid between his toes. The copied call struck his breast again, and this time the heartseed changed its pressure around him.

It had found the fixed Breathwood pattern in his coat.

The red sac turned away from Kessa’s blade and opened toward Jiang.

"Of course," he rasped. "Everyone wants the coat after it is ruined."

He could feel the seed trying to make him its next living answer. Clear tubes brushed the root stain in the torn wrap. Cold and warmth fought across his belly while the white tendrils climbed.

Jiang lowered his keel onto them.

The widened Wake Scar hurt too badly for thought. He used the pain as a border. Red pressure lay beneath it. The hall’s living shiver came through the founder rib at his back.

He did not need Splitflow to tell him which one he wanted.

Jiang rolled. His coat scraped across the heartseed, letting the white roots follow the stolen pattern. His feet came off the red sac. For one breath he gave it exactly what it wanted: a path toward the mark it recognized.

Then he put the sac between his body and Kessa’s cut.

"Now!" Jiang shouted into the founder wound.

Kessa heard him this time. Maelin’s blade came through the red wall beside Jiang’s beak.

Kessa could not see the founder scar from where she stood. She could see the torn coat, the white roots reaching for it, and the red sac pressed beneath Jiang’s breast.

Her first angle would have cut him free by taking the marked cloth and the flesh under it.

Kessa stopped as the guildhall rolled closer to the lantern.

"Kessa." Aylin’s voice crossed the rolling bay.

"I know," Kessa said without looking away.

"No. You know where he is. Decide what you are cutting."

Kessa looked once at the empty founder ribs around the borrowed heart.

Then she turned Maelin’s blade away from Jiang and drove it through the white roots feeding the red sac.

"This is not her hall because it has her wound," Kessa said. "It is her hall because she let the living leave."

The roots parted, and Jiang kicked.

His webbed feet struck the sac while his keel rolled across its warm center. Kessa levered with the blade from outside. The heartseed tore free of the flight channels and entered the cut between them.

Red pressure collapsed, and the Armada lost its pull on the wounded wing.

For one terrible instant, it stopped moving at all.

Myrn hit the outside current with her sound wing. Sivra’s cut hinge carried the force into the hall. Living black glass shuddered from the flight wall to the empty founder wound.

The wounded wing opened by its own reflex.

The motion expelled the heartseed. It passed Kessa in a flood of red water, struck the outer scale, and tumbled into guild-road with its white roots clawing at nothing.

Aylin hauled high-root, and Jiang left the founder wound tail-first. His beak struck the cut once, his bad leg twice, and then Kessa hooked her free hand into the torn coat behind his shoulders.

Together, she and Aylin pulled him onto black glass.

No System message welcomed him. Nothing rewarded the heartseed’s destruction. Starcurrent Keel remained locked. The cold line under Jiang’s belly stayed open, and Maelin remained dead.

Ahead, the Armada lantern drew its fallen heart back on loose white roots.

Its shutters closed around the damaged seed. The red light did not break or dim. It banked away from the surviving guildhall and joined a moving cluster farther inside the confluence.

Kessa watched it go. "We did not kill it," she said.

"We kept what it wanted," Aylin replied.

The founder ribs remained open behind them.

No clear root reached for Kessa. No inherited mark appeared on her skin. The hall’s wings beat out of time, corrected, and beat again without a body standing in Maelin’s place.

Maelin’s hall flew with its heart still empty.

Then a black orchard crossed their path.

It grew along the spine of a road-beast shaped like a whale assembled from dark bone and green sinew. Marrow-white branches bent under clear fruit. Suspended houses swung between the trunks while armored figures ran along living bridges.

One branch struck the guildhall’s outer scale.

It did not pierce. Black bark opened into hooked fingers and held the two moving bodies close enough for a woman to cross.

She came down the branch in a long coat stitched with pale leaf ribs. One side of her head was shaved beneath a sweep of iron-gray hair. A hooked pruning spear rode across her back, and black sap covered both gloves.

The stormmew launched from Kessa’s shoulder at her face.

The woman caught it around the body without closing its wings. The stormmew bit her thumb through the glove.

"Good," she said. "You kept the ones that object."

Kessa raised Maelin’s blade. "Put it down."

The stranger set the bird on the outer scale. It bit her again before returning to Kessa.

"Raska Morn," she said. "Bone Orchard Guild. I am not boarding to claim your hall."

"Then leave it." Kessa kept Maelin’s blade raised.

Raska looked past Kessa to the open founder wound, the red water, and Jiang shivering against Aylin’s boot.

"I would," she said, "if your fight had not rung through every dead root in my orchard."

Behind her, clear fruit opened across the black branches.

Each one reflected a different road in the confluence.

In dozens of those reflections, red heartseeds were already moving.
