Transformed into a Penguin: My Evolution Penguin System

Chapter 274: Jiang Chose the Keel That Could Never Anchor Him

  • Next Chapter

The wounded wing dragged the guildhall sideways before Jiang could read the first choice.

Black flight scales rolled under him. Aylin caught his coat with one hand and the edge of Valea’s bent yoke with the other. Kessa went down on Maelin’s severance blade, driving its point between two scales to keep herself from sliding into open road.

Beyond them, the red lantern widened its shutters.

The hall’s infected wing answered.

It folded toward that light while the sound wing fought to carry the rest of the body elsewhere. The disagreement ran through the floor as a deep shudder. Released glasskites struck the inner wall. A stormmew tumbled past Kessa, recovered, and bit the nearest red strand as if spite were a form of engineering.

"That one learned from you," Aylin said.

Jiang dug both webbed feet into the scale. "It has better balance."

The three names sat across his sight like menu choices offered to someone who was not currently falling.

He fixed his attention on the first.

[ANCHOR BREAST I: HOLD ONE CONTACTED LIVING JOINT FOR ONE BREATH. ROAD RECOGNITION DEEPENS DURING USE.]

The infected joint bucked beneath him.

One breath might give Kessa time to cut. One breath might stop the wing from folding far enough to tear itself from the hall.

It would also teach this living road to recognize Jiang as the body holding it together.

The heartseed had crossed worlds looking for an empty founder wound. Jiang had no desire to introduce himself.

"Can you hold it?" Kessa asked.

Her blade had bitten only the outer scale. Every red pulse pushed the steel back out by the width of its edge.

"Yes," Jiang said. Aylin looked down sharply.

"That was the tempting answer. I am still working through why it is terrible."

"Work faster." The hall rolled again. Kessa’s dead-straight mouth twitched despite everything. Then the wounded wing pulled, and the almost-smile vanished.

Jiang forced his attention to the second choice.

[HUDDLE DRAFT I: WIDEN YOUR MOVING WAKE FOR ONE WILLING SMALLER BODY. NO CARRYING. NO SHIELD.]

For one stupid, hungry instant, the guild-road disappeared.

He saw Pale-Cheek at the rookery edge, cream mark bright against new feathers. White-Nape stood over the chick. Black-Crown watched Jiang from outside a huddle he had never been invited to join. Farther than all of them, beyond the sealed Bellmother road, two adult emperors had once answered him and were now trapped behind a path he could not reopen.

Huddle Draft would not bring any of them closer.

It might keep one chick inside his wake during a dangerous swim. It might let one smaller bird cross water that would otherwise strip it away. Someday, that choice could matter more than the hall beneath him.

Today there was no chick in his wake.

There was an entire wing being stolen.

The third name opened.

[STARCURRENT KEEL I: WHILE ALREADY MOVING, REDIRECT YOUR BODY ACROSS ONE NEARBY ROAD-CURRENT BOUNDARY. SELF ONLY.]

Jiang looked past Aylin’s boot toward the fighting wings.

Red tissue had spread around the lower flight joint until the hall’s own current could no longer escape cleanly. The sound wing drove air and road-pressure toward the rear. The infected wing bent that flow sideways, wrapping itself in a moving pocket that Kessa’s blade could touch but not enter.

Myrn climbed beyond it. Her sound wing held, while her injured wing leaked a broken wake through the split vanes. Every uneven stroke laid that wake beside the infected pocket for a heartbeat before the two currents pulled apart.

There was his crossing, and beneath it waited the price.

[ALL OPTIONS COST 3 EP. ADAPTATION WILL EXTEND THE WAKE SCAR ALONG THE LOWER KEEL.]

Cold already breathed through the old damage whenever Jiang lifted his belly from the scale. Extending it would put a strip of failed insulation along the part of his body meant to meet ice, water, and wind first.

The System was offering him a better way to move by making every still moment worse.

"Which one?" Aylin asked as the scale tipped beneath them.

Not *what are they*. Not *which should you choose*. She had learned the shape of that boundary.

"One lets me hold the joint," Jiang said. "It also lets the hall get a better taste of me."

Kessa’s hands tightened around the severance blade. "No."

"I had reached the same conclusion."

"The second?" Kessa asked.

"Could help one smaller willing body follow my wake."

Aylin understood what he had not said. Her gaze flicked toward the dark behind them, where no Bellmother path remained.

"And the third?" Kessa asked.

Jiang watched Myrn’s torn wing shed another broken current beside the red pocket.

"Gets me across. Does not bring anyone with me."

"Back?" Aylin asked, tightening her hold on high-root.

"That sounds like a later problem."

Aylin’s fingers closed around high-root until her numbed pair failed to follow. "I dislike later problems."

"You dislike my improvements."

Kessa made a sound that broke halfway between a laugh and a breath. Maelin’s words had reached all three of them. This time Kessa did not flinch away from the memory.

The red tissue surged. One living wing turned far enough for its inner vanes to scrape the hall’s lower ribs. Mothglass shrieked. A narrow scale broke free and vanished toward the lantern.

Jiang chose the keel that could never anchor him.

[STARCURRENT KEEL I ACQUIRED | EVOLUTION POINTS: 3 -> 0]

The Wake Scar lengthened without blood.

Cold passed through Jiang’s breast, followed his keel, and drove a white line beneath the feathers of his lower belly. He folded around it. His beak struck the scale. For a few breaths there was no guildhall, no lantern, and no choice he could regret properly because his body had become one long piece of winter.

Aylin lifted him against her coat.

Her warmth reached his back. Nothing reached the new line under his belly.

"Jiang." Her voice reached him through the cold.

"Still a penguin," he managed.

"Your belly is cold."

"That was included," Jiang said.

"Being included does not make it acceptable."

He tried to stand. The sound foot held. The unstable one skated over black glass until Aylin set her wrist beneath his breast.

Kessa looked from the new white break in his feathers to the infected joint. "Can it be undone?"

The System offered no refund. Jiang appreciated its commitment to poor service.

"No," Jiang said, and hated how small the word sounded.

Kessa pulled Maelin’s blade from the scale. Grief hardened her face, but it did not make the decision hers. "Then tell me where you need the cut."

Jiang aimed his beak at the red pocket’s underside. "Open it when I strike from inside."

"You cannot reach inside."

"I just bought an argument."

Myrn passed beyond the hall again. Sivra stood at the flight edge with both hands open and nothing in them. She called no turn. She gave no order.

Myrn saw Jiang watching. On her next stroke, she banked closer by her own choice.

Aylin loosened high-root. "It can pull you home. It cannot cross that current for you."

"Good," Jiang said. "Then it stays my mistake."

"That was not reassurance."

"I have no reassuring parts left."

He crawled to the downward edge of the scale.

The hall’s tilt had steepened. Open road waited below his beak, full of passing roots, bells, distant wings, and the red lantern’s hungry light. Jiang tucked the failed wing, pressed his breast low, and let the slope take him.

He slid belly-first. For once, being shaped like a badly packed barrel helped.

The edge threw him into Myrn’s broken wake.

Pressure seized his coat and spun him toward her injured wing. Jiang spread his sound flipper by instinct. Pain stopped it halfway, but the small change put his keel across the current instead of along it.

The new adaptation woke in the scar.

He felt two flows as separate surfaces against his belly: Myrn’s ragged wake beneath him and the heartseed’s captured pulse above. They touched along a narrow rolling boundary.

Jiang was already moving. He drove both feet back as if finishing a dive and turned his keel into that boundary.

The cold line flashed, and Myrn’s wake dropped away.

Jiang did not leap, fly, or vanish. The current caught the new angle of his body and flung him sideways across itself. For one violent breath, his feathers streamed in two directions. Then his breast struck the infected wing hard enough to empty his lungs.

High-root snapped behind him. Aylin paid out line rather than choosing his path. The cord passed through the boundary only after Jiang had crossed and dragged along the outer surface, useless until it found him again.

His webbed feet slapped red tissue.

It was warm, and that frightened him more than the road-dark.

The heartseed’s pulse climbed through his legs in the exact broken cadence once stolen from his lungs. Jiang spread his toes and held on while the wounded wing carried him toward the lantern.

Across the moving pocket, Kessa raised the severance blade.

"Inside," Jiang croaked, though the crossed currents nearly stole the word.

She could barely hear him through the crossed currents. She read the strike of his beak instead and drove her blade against the outer wall where he had marked it.

Mothglass entered one layer. Jiang shoved his keel against the inner fragment.

The scar gave him no second crossing. Cold flooded it, and the new sense went dull.

[STARCURRENT KEEL I LOCKED: REWARMING AND REST REQUIRED]

The inner fragment moved, but not out. It slipped away from Jiang’s pressure and ran along the wing’s living pulse toward the open founder ribs. Red fibers crossed the empty wound from side to side, knitting around absence.

Kessa struck again. Her blade missed the fleeing core and opened a path behind it.

The heartseed reached the founder wound.

For one beat, Maelin’s place remained empty.

On the next, the red tissue closed its grip around that emptiness, and the wounded wing turned fully toward the Armada.
