Transformed into a Penguin: My Evolution Penguin System
Chapter 238: The Chick Ate Beside Its Father’s Body
Hunger made the chick ask its dead father for food.
It pressed its beak beneath his, called once, and waited in the place where an answer had always arrived.
Its father’s head rested against the carrier hide.
Dark fluid climbed another groove beneath him.
His mate nudged his beak upward. When nothing came, she tried again with enough force to move the whole head. The chick called into the opened space.
Jiang looked away before anyone else.
"The water will reach that cradle on the next rise," Valea said.
His partner struck the saddle wall without turning from her mate.
Hest had already found the higher cradle. It hung above Bellwyrm’s back where three old pulse rails met, dry enough that pale shed fibers still moved when the chamber breathed.
"We move him now," Hest said.
"We move all three," Jiang corrected.
A second call ended even sooner.
Its voice ended early. The small body had begun to shiver beneath its loose gray coat, although the chamber air remained warm.
Hunger had joined grief without waiting for either adult to finish.
Jiang still carried two clean fish in his body. He had guarded them through the white tooth, the family reunion, and the broodlift because post-molt hunger could turn one bad hour into weakness he could not recover from.
One belonged to the chick now.
His partner saw him work his throat.
She stepped off the male and blocked Jiang before he reached the cradle.
Her warning call was for Jiang alone. This was her chick beside her mate. Food carried from one adult body to another was never just meat in a rookery.
Jiang stopped beyond her reach.
"I am not asking for his place," he said.
The sentence sounded weak even to him. A place in a rookery was made from feeding, warming, answering, guarding, and returning. Jiang had already done some of those things. The male had died doing the rest.
Words could deny a claim while the body in front of her looked like one.
Human words meant little to the behavior holding her there. He lowered his breast, turned his beak away from the chick, and brought the fish only as far as his own mouth.
Silver showed between the black edges of his beak. The fish remained whole, clean, and small enough for the chick to take.
His partner inspected the fish.
She smelled Jiang next. Her beak passed over the wet flank leak, the under-oiled tail, and the throat that had carried the fish. Then she went back to the small body.
Once more, the chick asked its father.
Its mother touched the male’s beak and opened their shared call with a low note.
Only stillness came back to her.
She made a space beside the dead male’s breast.
Jiang entered only that space.
He kept his feet outside the dead male’s feathers. His partner watched each step. The room she allowed was barely enough for Jiang’s beak and the chick’s head, which made the boundary clearer than any human permission speech could have managed.
Hunger made the chick fast. Its beak caught the fish’s head, lost it, and caught again. Jiang held still while the small throat worked. His own appetite reacted to the smell with humiliating speed.
He kept his beak open until the tail disappeared.
Shivering continued, but the chick’s feet steadied against the hide.
It turned toward the male again after swallowing. The small beak touched his throat, then returned to the place where the fish had been. Feeding had solved hunger for the hour. It had not confused one adult scent for another.
Jiang felt relief loosen something under his ribs. Grief tightened it again before he could mistake the feeling for victory.
His partner pressed her breast around it and left Jiang outside the warmth.
That was the right answer. Relief still hurt.
Behind them, the wakehound tore at the old brood yoke.
A broken call scraped through the collar. Fluid around Jiang’s feet flashed white, and the trapped animal turned from the chick toward his scent.
Hest lifted the saddle pin.
"It cannot bite him if it no longer has a working throat."
Valea put herself between the pin and the well. "Drive that through the collar and the body will pull down. Watch the barbs."
"I have watched them flood the room."
"Then watch what they are attached to."
Hest moved the pin toward the wakehound without striking.
At the pin’s approach, the animal recoiled. Its harness pulled against both embedded barbs. One four-pointed head shifted under the dry sac, and a strip of Bellmother tissue peeled with it.
Dark fluid poured faster.
Hest stopped before the tissue tore farther.
Valea did not celebrate being right. She took the pin from his hand and laid it across two copper rails where neither hunter nor pulse could send it loose.
"Kill it after the shell is free," she said.
"You have improved my plan by moving the dangerous part earlier."
"I have moved the part that is tearing our floor."
Jiang climbed out of the family cradle. "You can resume being equally right after we get them above the water."
Bellwyrm had reached the same conclusion for its own reasons.
Dark fluid touched the burned edge of its lower jaw. The long creature jerked back, struck the family cradle with one shoulder, and nearly tipped the dead male into the well.
The female caught her mate’s neck. Jiang received the tumbling chick along his chest. Hest and Valea took opposite carrier handles.
Bellwyrm drove its sound forelimb beneath the lower rail.
The creature lifted until the family cradle came away from the flooded groove. Its burned forelimb stayed against the dry wall, shaking without taking weight.
"Use the higher cradle," Valea said.
Hest looked up. "I had hoped we were lifting this one for the pleasure of it."
No straight climb joined the old pulse rails. They rose around the wall in separate curves, meeting only when the Bellmother expanded. Hest could guide one carrier handle. Valea could guide the other. Neither could lift while Bellwyrm held the entire lower side.
Jiang put the chick back beneath its mother’s breast.
His partner watched him leave. She did not stop him this time.
He crossed the wet floor toward the upper rail and hated every step of it. White light followed the oil around his feet. The wakehound followed the light.
At the first pulse rib, Jiang climbed onto his belly and wedged his beak beneath an old copper catch. He could not lift the carrier. He could release the higher cradle when the rails met.
The next heartbeat expanded the chamber.
All three copper curves touched.
Jiang bit the catch and pulled. Rust cut his tongue. The upper cradle dropped along its short rail until Bellwyrm’s shoulder struck its underside.
"Take the weight while the rails meet!" Valea said.
Hest hauled his handle. Valea pushed with her sound arm and kept the bleeding one against her ribs. Bellwyrm raised its forelimb. The female shoved from inside the carrier while staying over mate and chick.
Carrier and family crossed into the higher cradle.
His partner refused to settle until she had tested the new bed herself. She pushed past Hest, walked the curved wall, smelled the dry fibers, and checked every gap where dark fluid might climb. Only then did she lower her mate and draw the chick beside him.
Her choice made the higher cradle a resting place. The old rails alone had offered only equipment.
Dark fluid washed over the lower one.
Pale body lunged after Jiang’s trail. Its split ring held, but one white plate tore farther from the old yoke. Beneath it, a copper release tongue appeared and vanished under the next wave.
Valea caught the brief copper flash.
"The shell can come off from below," she said.
"Below is becoming a generous description," Hest replied.
Around them, the chamber contracted. Fluid reached Bellwyrm’s breast and the base of the higher cradle.
Jiang looked at his partner.
She stood above the dead male with the fed chick beneath her. Water reflected white barb light across her breast. She followed Jiang’s gaze to the release tongue under the hunter.
Her call came low and furious.
He gave his own note and waited.
Fed now, the chick answered with more strength than before.
His partner stepped onto the outer edge of the cradle. She did not invite Jiang into the family. She put her body between him and the chick while leaving the way to the flooded rail open.
The remaining clean fish sat heavy inside Jiang. His widened flank was already wet, his tail had lost its oil seal, and none of the active abilities that once made impossible water survivable had recovered.
He wanted another plan.
The release tongue lay beneath the hunter, and the water had reached the dead male’s new cradle. Wanting did not create a second penguin who could reach it.
Jiang entered the dark fluid.
It passed through the gap in his flank coat and soaked the bare patch near his tail. Warmth vanished beneath the pressure of the Bellmother’s next beat.
No active ability returned to save him.
He filled his lungs, pushed from the rail with his sound foot, and dived toward the wakehound’s white harness.
