Chapter 237: The Armada Had Cut a Living Bell Into a Hound

  • Next Chapter

Dark fluid rose through the brood well with a pale back inside it.

Jiang smelled his own coat oil before the wakehound broke the surface. The scent had entered with the severed counterweight cord and clung to the animal’s six gills.

Its blind face turned toward him.

Its circular mouth opened.

Bellwyrm moved before anyone else.

Bellwyrm stepped over the chick and put its unburned forelimb across the front of the family cradle. Its ruined jaw hung above the dead male’s feet. The female climbed onto the curved saddle wall behind it, ready to strike over Bellwyrm rather than trust the barrier.

Nobody had commanded either one.

Pale flesh lunged from the well.

One broad fin caught the rim. The other folded under its body where it had struck the Bellmother during the fall. Pale skin dragged over copper-black iron, leaving a wet smear behind.

Its harness hit the nearest empty cradle.

Its split ring dropped into the forked fitting and locked there.

Its mouth closed short of Jiang. Water and hot breath struck his breast. He stumbled backward on his sound foot while the straightened leg folded beneath him.

Hest caught Jiang’s tail before the next lunge.

"I apologize for the location," he said, hauling. "The alternatives were teeth."

"Apology accepted. Your hand remains condemned."

The hunter struck the fitting again. Old iron held. Living wall behind it did not.

White sockets along the harness opened. One trail barb drove into a swelling dry sac and spread four points beneath the surface.

A punctured sac emptied dark fluid across the floor.

Jiang smelled himself in it.

Fear told him to climb above the wet rail and let the trapped animal break its own neck. The chick was behind him. His partner shielded the small body, while the male who had bought them this chamber lay beneath both.

Jiang wanted the mouth fixed on him.

He stepped into the dark spill.

Coat oil lifted from his feet. Six gills opened toward him, and the wakehound forgot every other body in the chamber.

Fluid reached the under-oiled feathers at his tail. Instead of beading away, it entered the coat and found skin around the widened flank leak. The chamber was blood-warm, yet each contraction pulled cold air through the wet gap.

Jiang had chosen to be the scent in front of the hunter. He could not make that choice halfway.

The choice made Jiang’s stomach turn. It also kept the hunter facing away from the family.

Trapped against iron, the hunter turned so hard that its folded fin bent farther. Its mouth followed the oil around the cradle, ignoring Hest, Valea, Bellwyrm, and the blood-soaked male between them.

"It still wants him," Valea said.

"Then I remain delighted that he is difficult to eat."

Jiang moved along the dry outer rail.

Step by step, it tracked Jiang until the split ring stopped it. Each time he crossed wet tissue, the gills flared and the body pulled. When he stepped onto dry metal, the blind head wandered between stale traces.

Its tracking had survived the fall.

Its throat had not survived whoever made the harness.

Strain brought the broken call back. A low note tried to rise behind the six gills. A white collar tightened. The sound flattened into water and pain before it could change.

Bellwyrm’s forelimb pressed harder across the cradle.

Beneath its mother’s breast, the chick answered.

Pulling ceased at the cradle ring.

Its head turned toward the small note. The collar pulled again, though no line led from it and no handler stood nearby. A strip of white metal slid aside beneath the strain.

Copper-black iron showed underneath.

Hest went quiet enough to frighten Jiang.

Valea saw his face. "What is it?"

"An old brood yoke," Hest said.

"That cradle fitting already told us it belonged here."

"The fitting holds harnesses. That ring held a throat before the white plate covered it."

Hest took one step closer to the well. The wakehound did not turn from Jiang’s dry rail.

Dark metal curved beneath its jaw and ran behind the gills. Small worn holes lined both sides. Empty holes, made for the gripping limbs that living-bell brood used to hold a cradle or one another.

Nothing grew from the wakehound there.

Only round scars remained beneath the white casing.

Jiang had watched free brood change grips when a root compressed. He had seen broad mouths carry injured juveniles and finned tails break a dangerous current. Every useful part had made a choice.

The armada shell kept the wakehound’s gills, fins, and scent hunger. White sockets occupied the places where gripping limbs should have held another living body. A collar crushed every call that tried to become an answer.

Anger arrived before pity and did not leave when pity joined it.

The animal still wanted Jiang in its mouth. Someone had made sure wanting anything else hurt.

Valea’s injured arm hung close to her body. Her other hand closed around an old saddle pin pulled from the empty cradle.

"The armada could have stolen the yoke," she said.

"Stolen would be the kinder answer," Hest said.

"Or bought it from someone who knew these cradles."

Hest looked at the white casing. "That is the answer I fear."

"Or taken the animal after someone else cut it."

Hest looked at the scar rows. "Also yes. I dislike every answer we can prove."

They had evidence of a Red Aeries handhold beneath armada white. They did not have the hand that passed it over.

Jiang looked at the dead emperor.

Part of him wanted Hest to drive the saddle pin through the hunter’s throat and call the matter finished. The male had died with its harness in his beak. His partner was still wearing the blood that choice had thrown across her.

Killing the wakehound would satisfy anger for less than a heartbeat. It would leave the collar, barbs, and old yoke locked inside the Bellmother, while the creature’s body filled the only well.

Jiang hated that the harder answer was also the useful one.

His partner left the family cradle.

She moved low around Bellwyrm’s unburned forelimb, put herself between the wakehound and the chick, and called the dead male’s last changing sequence.

A note struggled inside the hunter’s throat.

White metal choked the note.

His partner struck the collar.

Her beak rang against the plate. The wakehound convulsed and swept its sound fin across the floor. It caught her breast and threw her toward the brood well.

Jiang reached her first.

He planted his sound foot against the rail and caught the feathers below her neck with his beak. Her weight pulled his injured shoulder open. Bellwyrm lowered its ruined jaw beneath her without closing it, giving the female a wet surface to strike instead of the well.

She climbed over both of them and returned to her chick.

The chick buried its head against the dead male’s neck. His partner checked it, checked the body, and only then looked back at the wakehound. No recognition softened her. Whatever the animal had been, it remained the danger in front of her living chick.

Jiang understood that answer too.

No gratitude passed between animal, penguin, and man. The wakehound had almost reached the family. They had prevented it.

Hest used the moment to wedge his boot against the forked fitting.

"If I lift the ring, can it reach us?"

"Yes," Jiang and Valea said together.

Hest removed his boot with care.

The wakehound drove its body backward.

Another white socket struck living wall. Its barb entered beside the first and opened under a blood-warm channel.

A heartbeat forced fluid around all four points.

A dark ribbon sprayed across the old cradles.

Their family cradle stood above the first wash. Another pulse filled the grooves beneath it.

Valea put the saddle pin under the loose white plate. "The old yoke is carrying the armada shell. If we separate them, we may get the barbs out with the shell."

"While its mouth practices on Jiang?"

"Killing it leaves every point under load. The Bellmother will keep beating against them."

"A dead hunter pulls less while it sinks."

"A dead body in that fitting blocks the well."

"We have established that this place dislikes dead bodies."

The female called from the family cradle.

This time the wakehound answered before the collar closed.

Its sound was thin and wrong, but it changed after her note instead of repeating it. One piece rose. Another broke. The last arrived as a shudder through the old cradle rail.

Valea’s anger left her face. Dread replaced it.

"It heard her," she said.

"It answered differently," Jiang said. "Hearing is all we know."

The distinction mattered. A copied call would have repeated the female’s grief. This damaged note failed in its own places.

Bellwyrm lowered its body until its breast covered the chick’s side of the carrier.

Around them, the enormous living animal contracted.

Dry sacs flattened. Copper rails sank into the floor. The seam back to the pulse road closed so tightly that even its black line disappeared.

Dark fluid climbed over Jiang’s sound foot.

Every white barb in the wakehound’s harness lit at once.

Through all six gills, the animal smelled him and pulled against the old brood yoke.

Behind it, the Bellmother’s blood rose toward the dead emperor’s cradle.
