Chapter 218: The Armada Cut the Living Call from the Water

  • Next Chapter

White fire entered the call arch and closed around the female emperor’s voice.

Her low beginning narrowed beneath Jiang. The unfinished space where the injured male should have answered became a clean hard note, held too long by stone that did not need to breathe.

Then the family vanished from the road.

Below him, the armada diver turned its short hook inside the arch.

Curved teeth opened from the shaft and bit across separate water grooves. One carried the rising current. Another had carried sound through the bridge skin. White fire pulled both into the same cut.

Jiang pressed his beak to the dry floor crack.

Below him, the diver fixed a second brace around the hook. More white-armored bodies climbed behind it, using the line they had built from parapet to arch.

A completed call came out of the stone.

A female call began low, reached the second note without interruption, and stopped. Its male answer carried a rough middle. Three chick sounds followed.

Water rushed through the cut.

Soon the sequence played again.

Same beginning. Same uninterrupted second note. Same rough answer. Same chick sounds, each separated by the same empty space.

Nothing in the copy carried a body adjusting to water. No breath shortened the female’s second note. The male’s rough middle never scraped lower, and the chick did not move closer to either adult. Even the current failed to bend the sounds; the diver’s hook had fixed them to one piece of bridge skin.

Jiang watched white bubbles leave the armor below. Each breath disturbed the water around the diver while the stolen voices remained untouched. Living throats and moving current had been separated from the call.

Jiang wanted to strike the floor until the false call broke. His split beak reminded him what stone would win.

"They caught one exchange," he called up the breath spine. "Now it repeats."

Aylin’s voice reached him along the dry seam. "Can you still hear the living one?"

"No living voice remains."

She did not tell him it would return.

Vessa lay at the entrance with one arm inside as far as her shoulder allowed. "The hook is pinching the call groove into the current groove. They can climb the sound toward us."

"Can you cut the arch?" Aylin asked.

"From here, I can drop half the road."

"That was not my question."

"It is the answer I have."

White fire spread from the diver’s hook into the dry shutter hinge. Heat reached Jiang’s beak through the stone.

He backed farther along the breath spine.

Ahead, the seam narrowed before opening over a round shaft. A black shell weight hung below it, suspended above the drowned road on a braided root line. Beside Jiang’s sound foot, a flat retaining wedge held the line inside a stone jaw.

"There is a crown weight ahead," he said.

Vessa stopped moving at the entrance.

"Describe the retaining jaw."

"Black stone. Flat shell wedge. Root line running down."

"That closes the emergency gate under you. If the old hinge still exists."

"And if it does not?"

"The weight keeps falling."

Jiang looked through the shaft.

Below the shaft lay the drowned bridge. One white-armored diver had crossed the call arch. Others remained on the Cairnspire side of it. Separate guild swimmers moved among the ribs, too close to drop anything without warning.

Folded into the bridge crown beneath the hanging weight, the emergency gate waited. Its shell plates overlapped like closed fins. If they fell straight, the wall would land between the first diver and the climbers behind. If the bent hinge threw them sideways, it could close the side arch on Cairnspire’s swimmers instead.

Jiang could release stored weight. He could not choose how old metal failed.

He gave the breath spine one broken contact call.

That false family repeated beneath him without changing.

The narrow finned swimmer answered from the side arch with a tail strike against stone. Its rider followed with a cloth snap. From farther out, another guild animal struck a different rhythm with its foreclaws.

They had heard him. They had not agreed to the same route.

Jiang pecked the retaining wedge once without loosening it.

"I need the swimmers clear," he said.

Vessa shouted from the shelf, but her words could not travel through the water.

Irra solved a different part.

Ashwake had no sail to spread over the opening and no mast to carry a signal. Its crew overturned a broad feeding shell against the outer water and beat the hollow underside with blunt poles.

Pressure and noise carried the warning into the drowned road.

One guild swimmer retreated toward Cairnspire. Another went deeper through the side arch. The finned animal below Jiang refused both paths until its rider released the last length of abandoned cloth from one ankle. Then they crossed under the call arch together.

Morrowfin moved across the broad entrance.

She could not fit the bridge road. She did not try again. Instead, she opened her sound wing outside the cracked star and drove one pressure stroke across the mouth.

Morrowfin’s wake entered every flooded span.

Armada divers flattened against their hooks. Cairnspire swimmers chose stone, side arches, or open water according to their own bodies. Morrowfin’s wounded fold shuddered against her flank, and dark blood entered the current near the joint.

She closed the sound wing after one stroke.

Irra did not ask for another.

Through the shaft, Jiang saw the nearest friendly tail clear the hanging weight.

He wedged the wrapped shell tongue beneath the retaining peg.

His first push drove the tool sideways. He caught it with his beak before it fell through the shaft. His old split opened against the wrapping, and blood warmed his tongue.

Jiang reset the broad edge.

His sound foot pressed the tool. His tail braced against the seam wall. Behind him, the injured leg lay useless along the cloth, sending pain up from the hip.

He pushed until the wedge moved.

Root line groaned inside the jaw.

The shell weight dropped a handspan and stopped. Below it, an emergency gate pulled from the bridge crown but caught against one bent rib.

White fire climbed closer through the shutter hinge.

"Push it again," Vessa called.

"I was planning a rest."

"Rest after the old bridge decides whether it remembers us."

Jiang planted the sound foot higher and drove the wedge with his whole body.

At last, the retaining wedge came free.

Black shell weight fell through the shaft.

Stored mass, not Jiang, tore the emergency gate from its bent rib. A wall of overlapping shell plates dropped between the call arch and Cairnspire. It struck the drowned bridge hard enough to throw both divers and guild swimmers away from the center.

No body remained beneath it.

Across the main current, the gate seated.

White fire vanished from the air shutter.

Below Jiang, the copied family call cut off halfway through its perfect second repetition.

Behind Jiang, the breath spine broke.

Stone split behind his tail. Dry cloth dropped into the crack and caught between two ribs before reaching water. The retrieval line snapped tight around his sound ankle.

Aylin pulled him toward the shelf.

Broken floor held Jiang on the far side. Her first draw turned his ankle but could not bring his hip through the narrowing gap.

"Stop pulling now," he shouted.

She stopped before the line injured him further.

Dust filled the seam. Jiang buried his beak in the cloth until he could breathe without coughing. The new break behind him was too narrow for his body and still shrinking as shell plates settled below.

At least he remained dry.

He was also beyond Aylin’s reach.

Another strip of old feathers had peeled from Jiang’s flank during the fracture. They lay among the dust on the far side of the break. Jiang could not turn far enough to inspect the exposed skin without driving the straight leg into stone, so he pressed his sound foot against the cloth and checked whether the hip still held his weight.

It held badly, which was different from failing.

Aylin eased tension from the retrieval line until it no longer twisted the ankle. She could not see his body through the dust, but she gave one small pull and waited. Jiang answered with two, the nursery-pool signal altered because one pull now meant danger beneath them.

Neither pretended the line could bring him home through solid stone.

Every false voice had gone.

For several breaths, only the emergency gate groaned beneath him.

Then a low female voice came through the road beyond it.

The injured male interrupted early. A chick answered from close beneath one adult body and changed again before the sound faded.

Living voices remained on the far side of the divers’ gate.

Aylin touched the taut retrieval line at the shelf entrance.

"The road still reaches them," Jiang said.

"And the dry spine no longer reaches you."

Vessa looked toward a small intact feeder cradle hanging above the flooded gap.

Aylin followed her gaze.

"Tell me how that shell keeps air," she said.
