Transformed into a Penguin: My Evolution Penguin System
Chapter 217: The Penguin Crawled Above the Drowned Road
An armada diver climbed past the broken parapet before Cairnspire found its dry way down.
White armor moved beneath the shelf in pieces: a shoulder behind one rib, a hooked hand under another, pale fire running along a short line fixed to bridge stone. Upward current pressed against the diver, but each opened hook gave the next pull somewhere to begin.
Vessa struck the scorched wall beside Jiang.
Stone answered with a hollow knock.
"Breath spine," she said. "Every submerged bridge has one above the crown. It lets trapped air leave when the road fills."
She drove the borrowed hammer into the burn crack. A slab broke inward and exposed a dry black seam no wider than her head.
"That admits a hand," Aylin said.
"It admitted a worker before the star turned. Now it admits him."
Vessa pointed the hammer at Jiang.
Inside the wall, the seam descended above the drowned bridge, close enough that waterlight moved across its ceiling. Broken support ribs had crushed it into a crooked crawl. An adult human shoulder would stop at the first turn.
Jiang looked at the white hooks below.
"I dislike being the correct shape for this."
"You chose a shape with a sequel," Aylin said. "You did not choose this hole."
His family called again through the road.
Their voices reached the shelf blurred together. A low female beginning shook the loose slab. Somewhere inside the stone, the injured male interrupted, and the chick’s rasp vanished under a rush of water.
Vessa put one ear to the exposed seam. "The spine should carry that sound cleanly. An air shutter is jammed below us."
"Can opening it wash out more of the cradle?" Aylin asked.
"Leaving it shut is already doing that. The trapped air forces every surge through the broken packing. Open the slit, and some pressure rises here instead."
"You said some pressure?"
"I lost the bridge where we kept the better answer."
Aylin studied the seam, then Jiang’s shedding flank. "You stay on dry stone. If the floor wets, you stop. If the line catches, you stop. If your breathing changes, I pull."
"You make exploration sound hostile."
"I have met the explorer."
Vessa found a flat tongue of broken shell and wrapped both edges in silver cloth. It could pry without cutting the old air bladder inside the shutter.
Aylin spread another length of dry cloth through the entrance. She fixed one end around a shelf horn and laid the rest over the rough floor so Jiang’s stripped breast would not scrape stone. His retrieval loop remained on the sound ankle.
Jiang tested the cloth with his good foot.
His bad leg followed straight behind him when he entered.
He could not waddle in the crushed seam. Jiang lowered his body, pressed the sound foot against one wall, and pushed, bracing his tail so the hip could not roll. His working flipper stayed tight to his side. Opening it would catch the torn shoulder against the ceiling.
Old feathers dragged along the cloth.
At the first turn, the dark line of the Wake Scar rubbed against dry shell and began to itch. Jiang stopped until the sensation separated from the deeper hip pain.
Aylin left the retrieval line loose. "Answer me."
"The hole remains insulting."
"Good. Keep complaining to me."
He crawled deeper into the seam.
Aylin lost sight of him after the turn. The retrieval line became their only shared movement: a short draw when his good foot pushed, a pause when the hip needed rest, and a slow return of slack after each body length. She held it across her palm instead of wrapping it around her wrist.
One loosened feather came back along the cord. Another followed, dark with oil but dry. Aylin caught both before the wind could take them over the shelf.
"You are leaving pieces behind," she called.
"The important piece is still complaining."
"That remains under review."
Light entered through cracks beneath his breast. Water moved directly below, close enough to cool the stone without touching him.
Between two bridge ribs, the second Cairnspire swimmer came into view.
It was a narrow finned animal with a rider folded against its neck. Their cloth line had caught beneath a fallen slab, explaining the sideways pulls. The rider released the line rather than let it pin the animal. Both moved deeper under their own strength.
No one waited for Jiang to approve the choice.
At the shelf mouth, the line handler felt the release and let the abandoned cloth go. She did not throw a replacement after the swimmer or ask another banner to carry one. The animal and rider had chosen mobility over retrieval, and the choice left them with no easy pull home.
Below Jiang, they flattened against the drowned parapet while a white-armored shape climbed past. The finned animal held still until the diver’s guide light moved on, then crossed behind it toward a dark side arch.
Farther down, the blue-throated wyvern that had returned was gone from the road. Another guild swimmer passed through its abandoned path and struck one armada diver with a broad tail. Still hooked to the wall, the diver swung clear instead of losing the climb.
Impact traveled into the breath spine. Dry dust struck Jiang’s face, and the floor shifted beneath his sound foot. He pressed his tail into a corner until the seam stopped moving. His bad leg could not help him brace; it lay straight in the cloth track and pulled at the hip whenever stone tilted.
He waited for the diver below to move before crossing the next crack. Speed would only have rolled his exposed breast over the opening.
Jiang reached the first air shutter.
It lay flat across the spine like a black eyelid. Pale crust sealed three sides. The fourth had buckled inward, leaving a gap that exhaled cold whenever the drowned road surged.
He set the cloth-wrapped shell tongue under the buckled edge.
His first push folded the sound ankle.
Jiang pulled the foot back before the retrieval loop tightened. He moved the tool with his beak instead, catching the wrapped end behind the split rather than across it. Salt and old blood touched his tongue.
"I found the shutter," he called.
Vessa’s answer came through the seam. "Do not break the dark skin underneath."
"Your timing remains excellent."
"If you broke it, you would already know."
Jiang shifted the shell tongue sideways until its broad face lay against the crust. He braced the handle with his sound foot, pressed his tail against the opposite wall, and used his body as a wedge without bending the bad leg.
Crust cracked around one corner.
Under his tool, the shutter lifted and fell.
Water slammed the stone below him. Jiang froze with both flippers held close. A bead forced through the floor crack and stopped in the cloth beneath his beak.
He backed away from it.
One bead mattered during the transition.
Aylin felt the retreat through the line. She pulled only enough to take slack from his path, then stopped when he stopped.
Jiang waited until the bead ran away through the crack.
He returned to the shutter.
This time he worked the pale crust instead of the black lid. His beak drew the shell tongue along one side. The sound foot held the loosened flakes down so none fell into the bladder seam. When his hip shook, he lowered his breast onto the cloth until stone carried his weight.
A second crusted corner released.
Air rushed past Jiang’s face.
On its surviving hinge, the shutter rose. Cold wind moved up the breath spine and out through the opening beside Aylin and Vessa. Below, the drowned current lost part of its upward force. Pale grit stopped lifting from the nearest cradle ear.
Family calls entered the dry seam.
Without water crowding the sound, Jiang heard the female begin low and leave room before her second note. Close stone carried the injured male’s answer with the same rough middle he had used beneath the brood fold. Two short chick sounds followed; after a shift, a third came from somewhere nearer the female.
Jiang remembered all three bodies.
He remembered the male refusing to move the egg from his feet even when weakness bent his neck. He remembered the female pushing food through a reach too small for her head. The chick had been wet, blind, and furious at the cold. None of those memories gave him a distance, but the voices now carried the same unfinished attention.
He still did not know where the road had found them.
Below the open shutter, white light passed over black bridge skin.
An armada diver had reached the call-bearing arch.
One gauntleted hand opened a short hook against the stone. Its teeth sank beside the air channel Jiang had just cleared.
Below him, the diver looked up through the crack.
White fire entered the arch between them.
