Chapter 146: Ninebell Heard Its Own Bells Lie
Bronze tried the mother’s new ending a second time.
Every note was right. Nothing between them was.
Jiang felt the difference through the mother’s flank before he understood what he had heard. Two fine tremors crossed inside her breast whenever she called. They met in a quick, steady beat that belonged to the body touching him.
Inside the wall, one tremor changed. Its partner hurried after it.
For an instant, the copied voice shivered between two mothers.
With a snap of her neck, the female drove her beak into the wall.
Bronze dented. A black-green drop welled from the mark and ran toward the broken feeding notch.
Beneath her brood fold, the chick answered.
Then the wall answered her.
Jiang wanted the real family call to remain inside the three bodies he could touch. Fear tightened his empty belly when the stone gave it back.
Between the two calls, the male tried to rise. His breast rose clear of the hide, both folded legs strained, and his body fell against the mother’s free side. She rocked over the chick before finding her balance again.
Jiang shoved his sound shoulder under the male’s neck. Loose binding bit into his own breast, but the adult’s beak stopped short of the stone.
"Do not let the floor hear another full call," Brinn said.
She knelt with a shard of green mask pressed beneath one palm. Tir’s dragging knock came through it. Elen answered with the sharper touch of glass, then changed the last strike.
Another dragging knock sounded behind Pava.
Brinn did not waste a glance.
Again, the copy came from the opposite wall. It had Tir’s damaged rhythm, including the pause his injured hand forced between the second and third knocks.
"That one is not him," Brinn said.
She scratched the mask shard across the floor, struck once with her knuckle, and finished by tapping the glass against her own tooth. From below, an answer repeated the first two movements and replaced the tooth tap with Elen’s forked ending.
Only the scratch came from the wall.
Then bronze rang above them.
Valea’s head snapped toward the ceiling. "Westbell heard a living traveler under a closed road."
"There are four living travelers under several closed roads," Pava said. "Tell it to be more particular."
"Bells are famous for accepting criticism."
Another strike cut off Valea’s answer.
Bronze opened a seam around the family. It followed the vanished webbed cups, found no moonlight to carry, and bit into the ordinary hide instead. Under them, the hide pulled toward the wall.
Beneath the chick, the mother spread her feet. She could not step without lifting the small body with them, and the floor was trying to steal the surface under all three birds.
Pava caught the hide’s loose corner. Her other hand stayed outside the mother’s reach.
"We move what they chose to stand on," she said. "We do not move them."
Aylin took the corner beside her with the sound hand. Fresh wrapping around her other palm had already spotted red.
Kedra reached the opposite edge. Her white-burned fingers closed late, two of them folding only after she looked at them. Hest put one of his broken iron bars through the cloth and gave her wrist a thicker grip.
"That hand is on loan," Pava told her.
"On loan from whom?"
"Tomorrow. It has begun sending complaints."
Watching the humans gather around her, the mother opened her beak. Jiang felt the first voice wake inside the flank pressed to his.
He pushed closer before she could call.
Not to silence her. He lowered his own head to the hide and scraped his beak once across the weave.
Beside him, the male answered with the same small movement. His cracked breath stayed inside his body.
She looked down at both of them.
She lifted the foot beneath the chick only after Jiang braced the male. Hide moved under her other foot. Aylin and Pava drew their side. Kedra leaned back with Hest taking the pull through the iron bar.
Behind them, the bronze seam followed.
Again the bronze seam cut behind the mother’s tail. Valea jammed her road knife into it and turned the blade until the metal path bent away from the moving hide.
"Move them again," Valea said.
Carefully, the mother shifted her joined feet. Beneath her fold, the chick rode the movement and complained without losing the warm pocket.
Jiang dragged his numb leg. The backward claw snagged torn cloth. He pulled once, failed, and felt the hide begin to leave the foot behind.
Above him, the mother stopped.
Everyone holding the cloth stopped with her.
Jiang worried the claw free with his beak. Pain opened the crack at its tip, putting fresh blood on the hide. The female waited until his foot lay flat, then moved the chick again.
No road chose for her. No human hand touched her feathers.
They reached the raised edge of Pava’s windbreak before Glass answered Bronze.
Clear tubes along the chamber roof filled with mist.
The mother’s unspent call left her as white breath. A second strand came from the male. A smaller puff rose through her brood feathers when the chick called.
All three streams bent toward the same healer tube.
Pava released the hide and struck the glass joint with her wrapped shears.
The tube split. Three breaths fell as fog over the living bodies that had made them.
"Mine catches a final breath," Pava said. "It does not collect a family because Bronze misplaced them."
Iron answered from farther uphill.
Bolts withdrew inside the chamber doors. Hest drove both broken bar lengths through the handles before the panels could swing toward the family.
Something struck the other side.
The doors opened the width of Hest’s boot. Hot musk and rain entered through the gap, followed by one hooked claw larger than Jiang’s head.
Hest stamped the claw back. "Iron has found us a rescue."
"Does the rescue know that?" Aylin asked.
The claw hooked the lower bar and pulled.
"Its manners suggest considerable uncertainty."
Rootwood rang beneath the floor.
Varn came through the low arch with a short chain over his bare forearm. The missing sleeve had left dried cuts and fresh chain marks from wrist to elbow. He stepped over Brinn without disturbing the mask shard and drove a source hook into the bronze seam.
The hook sank farther than the thickness of the floor.
"Stop standing on my ceiling," he said toward the thing below.
Black-green water tightened around the hook.
Varn pulled once. The chain answered with a deep weight moving west beneath the city.
He changed his grip and pulled twice in quick succession.
The weight below copied the first pull.
The answering weight paused below.
Then the weight copied both pulls.
Varn let the chain go slack before the answering strain could take his arm.
"It is learning the work," he said.
"After it happens," Jiang thought.
The words had nowhere to go. His Link was gone, and every active gift remained silent. Instead, he lowered the sound side of his jaw to the floor.
Bronze carried the mother’s call beneath his jaw. The opening was exact. One half of the changed ending arrived first, and the second slid after it like a bad foot catching up on ice.
Jiang pulled his beak from the stone.
The father had heard it too. He lay weak against the mother’s flank, yet his beak followed the false beat through the floor. When the bronze repeated, he tapped the hide before the second half arrived.
The mother answered his tap with one of her own.
The chick pecked the underside of her brood fold at neither expected moment.
The bronze lost all three.
For one breath, Ninebell went quiet.
Then every surviving bell tried to find the missing call at once.
Valea’s road knife twisted in her hand. The seam beneath Varn’s hook widened and pulled a strip of faraway cobbles through the floor. Rainwater burst between them.
Hest’s doors slammed inward. The hooked creature on the other side came with them.
Broken healer tubes inhaled from the streets beyond the chamber. People shouted as their own breath fogged toward Glass.
Roots punched through stone under Varn’s boots, carrying cellar earth and pale blind insects into the light.
Bone Hunter gave no outline of what followed any of it.
Across Ninebell, hinges turned the wrong way.
Every guild door opened inward.
