Transformed into a Penguin: My Evolution Penguin System
Chapter 145: Their Last Road Closed Behind Her
Silver tore free from the nearest moon groove like a hooked blade.
It cut through the cloth over Aylin’s palm and pulled toward the mother. Aylin’s arm followed until her shoulder struck the stone lip.
Across the road, Kedra’s fingers bent backward.
"Let go," Valea said as the silver bit deeper.
Neither woman moved until the next pull bent them inward.
The last moon had shrunk to a white line behind the mother’s tail. Far-rookery calls still passed through it, thin now, but alive. The leading adult called for her from the other side.
Mother, father, and chick answered from Ninebell.
Silver tightened around Aylin’s bleeding hand.
Kedra tried to peel one finger from her own edge. The line jumped deeper into Aylin’s cloth, and Aylin shoved the hand down again before it could cut across her wrist.
"It wants both edges until it closes," Aylin said.
"Then both edges stop wanting it," Kedra answered.
They looked at each other across the light.
Earlier roads had tried to make one shape from them. This one had survived because they remained separate. Neither crossed the middle now.
Kedra turned her body away from the road.
Aylin turned her bleeding hand away and did the same.
At the chick’s call from under the mother’s brood fold, both women rolled outward.
Silver snapped free of both outer edges at once.
Aylin’s palm tore away from the cloth. Valea caught her around the ribs before her head struck the floor. On the opposite side, Kedra landed against Hest with her sound hand clenched shut.
The loose edges whipped toward the returned family.
Jiang threw his working flipper over his face. The failed one stayed trapped under him. Pava pulled the warm hide across the mother’s back, not to hold her, but to take the first cut.
Moonlight sliced the hide from edge to edge.
No blood appeared beneath it.
Brinn released Elen’s brace before it could spring beneath the mother.
Green glass sprang from the feeding lip. Her cracked mask shattered under the prong, and the remaining pieces skittered across Ninebell while the brace fell harmlessly beside the mother’s foot.
The last white line closed around her tail.
Wind touched the room once. It carried salt, old feathers, and the leading adult’s final call.
She answered with the ending she had chosen in Ninebell.
Her voice crossed no farther than the stone behind her.
Darkness replaced the far rookery.
No moon remained in the groove. No webbed cups waited under the dust. The feeding reach became a broken notch held by ordinary green glass, too narrow for the mother to return through and too damaged to carry her voice back.
She pressed her brood fold lower around the chick.
The male lay along her outer flank. His beak rested against her feathers, but his legs stayed folded behind him. Reunion had not returned the strength he spent keeping their chick alive.
Jiang waited for the father to rise anyway.
Nothing in his exhausted body changed.
Pava crawled to Aylin first. She wrapped the torn palm without asking the road for permission, then pointed at Kedra.
"Open your hand," Pava told Kedra.
"It is open enough," Kedra said.
"That is a fist pretending to cooperate."
"It disagrees with you."
Hest supported Kedra’s wrist while Pava worked one pale finger loose at a time. No joint was broken. The skin across her palm had been burned white by the cold line, and two fingertips did not answer Pava’s touch.
"You keep those," Pava said. "Whether they listen to you tomorrow is a separate argument."
Aylin sat against Valea with her wrapped hand held above her heart. "Her bedside manner has improved."
"Blood loss has damaged your judgment."
Quiet settled where the far colony had been.
Into that quiet came three knocks from below.
Brinn stopped gathering the pieces of her mask.
The first knock dragged against stone. The second struck through green glass. The third came late and weak, followed by a scrape along the buried carrier rubble.
Tir’s injured hand had made the dragging knock.
Elen’s glass had made the sharper strike.
Both alive beneath a road no human body could use.
Brinn put one broken mask piece against the floor. Her hand hovered above it while the mother bent over a chick she had crossed worlds to reach.
For an instant, Brinn wanted the silver back.
Not the far rookery. Not its moons. Only a road with enough room for one shoulder and one foolish choice.
Stone offered Brinn no such road.
She struck the mask piece once for Tir, slid it once for Elen, and added the changed ending they had used after the Bellmaw died.
An answer came through the rubble.
Brinn closed her hand around the glass. "Still there."
No one told her that sound was enough.
Jiang pushed himself toward the reunited penguins.
His good foot slipped on the torn hide. The backward claw caught, and he dragged it free before it could twist again. Every shove loosened the shoulder wrap against his bleeding breast.
The mother watched him approach.
Her beak opened in a warning Jiang recognized.
Jiang stopped outside its reach.
Beside her, the male tried to pull his folded legs under him. His breast lifted from the floor and dropped. The effort opened a cold gap along the mother’s outer flank, exposing brood feathers to Ninebell air.
Jiang looked at the gap, then at her beak.
He lowered himself where she could see.
With his sound flank, Jiang nudged the warm hide toward the male. The father caught its edge in his beak. Jiang pushed again, and together they folded the hide against the adult’s open side without lifting his body.
The chick clicked under the mother’s breast.
Jiang backed away until her beak could not reach him.
The mother struck the floor where his head had been.
Pava sighed. "Gratitude remains complicated."
Jiang did not try again. He settled along the torn hide’s edge, near enough to share warmth if invited but far enough to leave the choice visible.
Cold found the wet gaps in his feathers.
He had carried the chick only briefly, yet the empty place above his foot still felt wrong. The mother had every reason to keep him away. He had been the road’s mistake, an injured stranger with a backward claw and blood on his beak.
The male called from beside her.
His answer was weaker than before. Jiang replied with the low note the adult had accepted beneath Tideglass, then lowered his head.
The mother listened without closing the distance.
She checked the chick first. Her beak disappeared beneath the fold and emerged only after a small call answered her touch.
Next she checked her mate. He met her beak without lifting from the hide.
Jiang remained where she had left him.
The female rose just enough to move one foot while keeping the chick covered. Her first step carried the brood fold closer to the male. Her second dragged the warm hide toward Jiang.
She stopped with a narrow strip of cold floor between them.
No silver crossed the strip between them.
Jiang could have closed the distance. He waited.
The mother lowered her breast.
Her flank touched his without moonlight between them.
At first, only the ends of wet feathers met. Then she settled more of her weight against Jiang’s sound side and kept it there through one breath, another, and the chick’s next call.
Warmth came from her body alone.

No strength returned to Jiang’s failed flipper. His numb leg remained numb, his shoulder continued bleeding, and the cold still reached every damaged feather. The notice gave him nothing he had not been freely offered.
The male rested against the mother’s other flank.
For the first time in Ninebell, the chick answered from between both parents.
The female gave a new family call.
It held her mate’s broken pause, the chick’s quick middle note, and a rough ending Jiang had never heard beneath either moon. No fixed return could have carried it. Their last road was gone.
Bronze answered from inside the wall.
The first copy was exact.
Everyone in Ninebell went still.
The mother lifted her head and changed the ending.
Buried Gredudande repeated the opening. When it reached her ending, its bronze voice broke, searched across two wrong notes, and changed after her.
Brinn stared at the wall.
"That was not recorded," Brinn said.
