Chapter 46: Chapter 46: The End Of An Illusion

Junpai’s monologue, POV

----------

Nanami stood at the edge of the concrete boardwalk, where the tiles gave way to the sand. Her beautiful cream-colored sundress fluttered slightly in the sea breeze, but her posture remained perfectly centered, completely devoid of the frantic, defensive panic she had displayed near the Ferris wheel. She looked at me.

I couldn’t do anything to defend her, I must have looked like a dick .

She looked slightly tired from the situation at hand.

The afternoon sun sat low on the horizon, casting a flat, metallic glare across the water. The rhythmic, repetitive hiss of small waves flattening against the wet sand was the only consistent sound, a stark contrast to the chaotic white noise of the amusement park they had left behind.

"I think it’s best if I head home from here, Junpai," Nanami said, she didn’t sound in panic anymore.

Was I wrong? Did I make the wrong choice?

But she hasn’t agreed with anything Shion had pointed out or just maybe...

I flinched as if struck. I took a half-step forward, my hand instinctively rising from the pocket of my denim jacket, his fingers twitching. I had the desperate urge to protest, to beg her to stay, to demand a clearer explanation.

But I couldn’t.

No, wait don’t go. We can fix this. We can talk about it...

My mind was filled with unnecessary thoughts of us and none of how to solve the current problem, making her stay.

But deep down I didn’t want that, I could always get in touch with her but it might get difficult. I needed the exact mood to be like this if I wanted to extract the truth from Shion later.

I just have to be strong....

FUCK!!

But the words stalled, turning to ash before i could speak them.

The heavy, suffocating weight of guilt pinned my feet to the boardwalk. I looked at Shion, who stood slightly behind Oota, her disheveled hair blowing across her face, her fingers still loosely clutching her snapped sweater collar. I looked back at Nanami’s calm, unreadable expression. The audio recording echoed in my mind like a loop.

--------

"Social accommodation keeps people happy... why ruin his illusion? ..."

--------

I had been an insecure, frantic burden all morning. I had pushed his own anxieties onto a girl who was simply trying to accommodate him.

Even if the confrontation with Shion had turned ugly, i felt a sickening certainty that my own inadequacy was the root cause of the entire disaster. I couldn’t stop her. I didn’t have the right.

"I’m sorry, Junpai," Nanami added softly, her gaze lingering on my pale face for a fraction of a second. "I’m sorry for not being the perfect girlfriend you were looking for."

Why are you apologizing? It wasn’t your fault. I...did this to us.

She turned smoothly, her movements fluid and unhurried, and began walking toward the transit station stairs. She didn’t look back at Aki’s hard, defensive glare, nor did she acknowledge Oota’s conflicted, downward gaze. She simply left quietly.

I watched her form recede until she vanished past the ticket barriers. My shoulders slouched inward, my chest heaving in a shallow, silent rhythm of absolute heartbreak.

My reaction to the group wouldn’t seem that deep on the outside, making the event not much but to me I felt completely destroyed and thrown out like trash.

I’m sure the group would expect this since they might start wondering why I’m this emotional invested to her. They wouldn’t understand, that.....I’ve been into her for a very long...long time now.

An agonizing, prolonged silence settled over the remaining teenagers. We stood scattered across the entrance of the beach like chess pieces left on a forgotten board. Aki crossed his broad arms, staring out at the cargo ships on the horizon, his jaw tightly locked.

Oota remained rigid, his hands buried deep in his cargo shorts, the lingering adrenaline of the afternoon leaving him hollow and exhausted.

The mechanical click of a phone button broke the stillness.

Mataguchi stood two paces away, his eyes fixed on the digital screen of his device. He didn’t look at my slumped posture or Shion’s fragile frame.

"According to the optimized itinerary," Mataguchi announced, his voice a flat, clinical monotone that completely ignored the emotional wreckage around him,

"the evening atmospheric cooling has reached its baseline. We have precisely forty-five minutes of daylight remaining. We should move onto the sand now."

"Prez... seriously?" Aki muttered, his tone dropping into a low, incredulous rumble.

"Look at the mood right now. You think we’re in the right headspace to

just stroll on the beach?"

"I’m trying to help...The physical location is irrelevant to the processing of psychological trauma," Mataguchi replied deadpan, tucking his phone back into his black trousers.

"Remaining stationary on the concrete simply prolongs the social stagnation. Moving forward is the only logical course of action."

"Clearly you are not human" Aki added.

I should be annoyed with his input on the .after but I didn’t think of his statements as offensive because it was all truth.

And I agreed with his reasoning as well.

"He’s... he’s right, Aki," I murmured, my voice cracking slightly as i forced my gaze away from the station entrance. "Let’s just... let’s just walk. I don’t want to go home yet."

I wasn’t trying to brush it all off, infact it stacked to me as something I had to go down with.

"Oota," Shion whispered, lightly touching his sleeve, her tears slowly drying as she maintained her fragile posture. "Can we... can we just leave? I don’t want to stay here anymore."

All this could be an act, I shouldn’t also leave out that possibility.

"Yeah," Oota said softly, his jaw set as he turned his back on the Ferris wheel platform. "Let’s get out of here. The movie theater slots are waiting."

The group moved slowly across the white sand, our footsteps sinking into the dry grains, muffled by the constant, low murmur of the tide.

Inosuki purposely fell back, letting a wide, five-meter gap open between himself and the trio of Oota, Shion, and me.

He took a slow, measured breath of the salty air, his sharp eyes narrowing into a cold, diagnostic stare as he tracked the physical mechanics of the group.

I was too tired, depressed and down to pay attention to anything going on around me. I couldn’t care less about their thoughts on the matter.

The movie theater is a breaking point for now, I don’t even seem entirely interested in going anymore.

Minutes later.

We had arrived at the movie theater. It was still quite between us. Though Aki tried multiple times to form a conversation around me but it always died immediately if it gets to me.

This isn’t how it was supposed to go, I don’t feel go about myself right.

The interior of the Shinjuku Grand Cinema was vast, sterile, and smelled heavily of new carpet and synthetic butter. Because it was the grand opening weekend, the hallways were a maze of polished mirrors, neon blue LED strips, and heavy velvet curtains designed to isolate the theaters from the outside world.

What a waste. It was supposed to be both me and Nanami together in here.

Now none of this actually makes no sense to me, why even bother going here again if the original plan failed.

"Theater 4," Aki muttered, handing their digital tickets to the automated turnstile.

"Down the hall to the far left. It’s completely isolated from the main lobby. Good. I don’t want to see anyone." He added, I guess he was doing that for my sake.

You don’t have to, not like I’m going to enjoy it anyways.

I don’t even like seeing movies in the first place to beginning with or even going to the amusement park. I did those things because it was to please Nanami. So she wouldn’t be bored out of her mind about our date together.

I usually just be at the arcade or at home playing videos on tiktok like edits on chess or tactics on YouTube or rather just play a chess game to keep myself busy.

Imagine if dad sae me like this, he would just call me a failure and lock me up with that Nasa supercomputer with the chess game on and set to it’s hardest.

I can’t remember how many times I had to beat it to get this freedom.

We moved down the long, carpeted corridor. The walls were heavily soundproofed, swallowing the noise of their footsteps until the world felt strangely compressed.

Inside Theater 4, the darkness was absolute, punctured only by the colossal, shimmering silver screen displaying a static logo of the film studio. The room was mostly empty, a handful of silhouettes scattered across the upper tiers.

"Let’s sit in the middle row," Shion whispered gently, pulling Oota toward Row F. "It’s quieter there."

The seating arrangement locked into place naturally, dictated by the psychological scars of the afternoon. Shion took seat 12, with Oota immediately to her right in seat 13, acting as her physical shield. To Oota’s right sat me at seat 16 two sits away, staring blankly at the silver screen like a ghost, with Aki in seat 17.

Aki wanted to keep an eye on me for some reason, but I just pretend to ignored his existence.

Mataguchi and Inosuki took the row behind the empty row directly behind us Row H, seats 12 and 13. The group were scattered with everyone mood been spoiled and then insecure while some felt guilt.

As Oota settled into the plush leather chair, he let out a long, ragged breath. He leaned his head back, his red eyes burning from lack of sleep. The heavy, protective adrenaline that had carried him from the Ferris wheel platform was beginning to bleed away, leaving behind the raw, visceral exhaustion of the past forty-eight hours if I were estimated from his state.

I sighed loudly for Aki to hear me "whatever..." I murmured. Then took out my phone.

Opening my WhatsApp

"Come on man, it’s okay." Aki inserted trying once again to calm me down, which was what I wanted since his conversation with me will immediately cause the attention of the others.

"I can’t express my feelings out in the open. It’s just not like me" I added.

"...." He went silent for a moment before adding

"You can always do that online though"

That’s exactly what I wanted to hear. "Good idea" I immediately started texting Aki.

Little bro: Yo, you know it sort of hurt thinking about my feelings. It just so happened that I was dating a fake, get used and my best friend had a record and got victimized by her. What a way to go isn’t it

Aki immediately saw the message and didn’t know what to make out of it, obviously the message isn’t supposed to have any meaning for him but for someone else

I started forwarding it to the rest.

Aki on the other hand tried to stop me but he seem reluctant to agnore with me. So he text the other. Saying they shouldn’t pay too much attention to it, that it was just my way of vexing out my frustrations.

4:59 pm.

------

The subwoofers roared with a clean, cinematic explosion. The colors on the screen instantly saturated back into brilliant technicolor.
