Chapter 90: Chapter 90 Danielle dirty works
Eugene limped toward his lodge with Marcus’s help, his body still aching from the earlier confrontation. He had wanted to check on Noah, to see if the beautiful omega was alright after everything that had happened. But he refrained, knowing how sad Noah had been earlier. It was better to give him some space, some time to himself. The poor thing was overwhelmed, trapped in deep denial about the drastic changes occurring in his life. He seemed to be losing his mind, and Eugene understood that feeling intimately.
He had been in a similar position when he first received his powers. Eugene had desperately wanted something impressive—blood affinity, beast affinity, or even moonlight affinity, which was rare but mostly bestowed upon omegas for some inexplicable reason. Or dragon affinity, the most prestigious of all. He had starved himself, pushed himself to the brink, hoping for one of those. But instead, the universe had given him the ability to control time.
The disappointment had been crushing. For someone like him, how was time affinity supposed to help? It felt useless, worthless, and he had despised himself for it. He had disregarded his gift entirely, refusing to acknowledge it until his butler—the one person who had always believed in him—intervened. The man had kept in touch even from their kingdom, guiding him through that dark phase of self-hatred. With his help, Eugene had become a powerful time affinity user. Yet even now, he couldn’t fully appreciate his powers. In battle, he would be useless. Against someone like the devil son—a threat they were all facing—how could he stop such a powerful being with just time? It was almost absurd, completely ridiculous.
"I’m trying to text Damian and Killian," Marcus said, his phone in hand as he moved about the room. "But it seems like they’ve gone off for the night. I wanted to fill them in on how we’re going to handle tomorrow."
Marcus was arranging the table, setting out food he had prepared. At least he wanted to eat something before sleeping, his movements brisk and purposeful.
Eugene watched him from the sitting room, his gaze fixed on the window as his thoughts churned. "Why are you eating now?" he asked, his voice flat. "You know it’s not healthy this late."
Marcus shrugged, his expression unbothered. "As funny as this sounds, I haven’t told anyone else this, but food distracts me from my thoughts. And I’m hungry." He settled down, bringing a slice of toast to his mouth. "I want to see Ashton so badly right now, just to get these bad thoughts off my head. I’m always worried he’s in danger."
"Eating?" Marcus offered, holding out the toast.
Eugene shook his head. "He’s sleeping. I can feel his energy from here—so calm and soft."
Marcus rolled his eyes, scoffing. "You’re lying. Unless you marked him, we both know you can’t feel his emotions that deeply." His expression grew serious as he set down the bread. "And what if we’re the reason he’s in danger? What if we moonlight alphas are the bane of his existence? Have you ever thought of it like that?"
The words made sense, but Eugene didn’t want to think about it that way. He was selfish—yes, he admitted it. He wanted Noah absolutely, completely, and he wasn’t going to hide it anymore. That bullshit of keeping his feelings secret had to end. He wasn’t suppressing anything any longer. If they were going to destroy each other, then it would be better to do it with Ashton than with someone like Slyvia.
Thinking about how he had once been dying for Slyvia made him cringe. Ewww. What had he been thinking? How would his life have turned out if he had ended up with her? It would have been hell, absolutely miserable.
"Well, it seems like I’m the one still bothered by all this," Marcus said, gesturing with his bread. "Because clearly, you don’t give a fuck."
Eugene shrugged, his voice dismissive. "Why would I, when Ash is here? If I could run away with him, I would. I wouldn’t care if the whole of Quintorian crumbled—fuck that shit, man."
He looked back outside, surprised to find the grounds completely cleared of students. The only light still burning came from the administrative office, where Mrs. Danielle was undoubtedly still working, her head buried in preparations for the emperor’s arrival. She was a league away from madness already, and it seemed like they were just a step away from driving her into it completely. The school mess was hard enough to clean up, but now word had come that the emperor would be arriving earlier than intended because of some duties he had to attend to in a neighboring kingdom.
"She’s definitely getting fired," Marcus commented, stuffing more bread into his mouth. "No matter what efforts she puts in, the emperor will eat her alive."
He chewed hard, then washed it down with a gulp of juice, sighing in relief as he savored the taste of everything on the table.
"That’s her concern," Eugene replied. "And it was going to come sooner or later anyway. Something tells me this school isn’t going to stand forever. The secrets hidden here will soon go public."
Only the alphas truly knew the dirty things that had been done on these grounds—the bodies they had been forced to get rid of, the students who had been sacrificed to maintain the facade. Danielle always spun lies about expulsions and suspensions, stories of students who left and never came back. But she couldn’t fool them. They had seen it all: how she helped bury those poor omegas, using them as offerings to feed the monsters that lurked in the shadows. It happened again and again, until the cemetery was overflowing with their remains.
And now, with what had happened in the cafeteria, someone was clearly here to take revenge. It wasn’t going to be small. Danielle was never innocent, and though she had tried her best, very soon she would be dealt with.
"Going to sleep," Eugene announced, rising from his seat. "Make sure you clear that table right away. I don’t want to see any rats or roaches around."
He brushed an invisible speck of dirt from his chest, tucking a stray hair behind his ear before disappearing into the dark passage at the end of the room.
Now alone, Marcus stared at the plates, his thoughts drifting to the new threat. Harold had informed them of something else: Lysander Valmont was planning to mark Noah at the ceremony the next day. Among all the other things they were dealing with, this news struck him the deepest. It consumed his thoughts, filling him with a cold, burning rage.
"Dad’s," Marcus muttered, clenching the bread in his fist. "I can’t help but think if this is the struggle you all faced in your love stories. Why can’t we just live in peace with our lovers? The world is certainly not fair for people like us."
He tightened his grip on the bread, then his expression hardened. Never. Marcus would rather die than watch Noah get marked by that demon from hell. Over his dead body.
