These Familiars Are Strange
Chapter 302: Invasion (21)
"Hmm, it seems like they’re holding up better than I thought."
Captain Fang watched the fight between the Abyss Demons and the Abyss Guards.
It didn’t actually seem like he was disappointed by this. ℯℯ𝑙.
After all, it would have been too suspicious if they fell that easily. He had been the one that had arranged everything, so he needed to still at least act like a proper captain.
It wasn’t as if the plan was finished yet. Before the final moment, there were things that could always go wrong.
But in this case, it didn’t seem like things were going against the plan.
Especially when there was a gap that was created in the defensive line of the Abyss Guards. It didn’t seem like they were able to hold on under the fierce attack of the Abyss Demons.
Not that this was strange considering that the main force of the Abyss Guards had been sent away.
"It seems like we have no choice but to get involved as well."
The other captains looked like they were struggling over whether to provide support or to keep watching.
It wasn’t as if they were afraid of fighting, there was a reason why they had become captains in the first place. In the Abyss Guards, it was all about strength that would allow one to rise up in rank.
As long as one killed enough Abyss Demons, they would be able to reach the rank of captain.
So it wasn’t as if any of these captains didn’t know how to fight.
The problem was that they didn’t want to leave the exit portal unguarded by going forward to fight. If there was something that happened because they chose to charge forward to fight, then they really wouldn’t be able to explain it.
Not to mention that if the Abyss Demons were to break into the outside world...
But if they didn’t do anything now, it didn’t seem like they would have a chance to do anything. It really seemed like it was only a matter of time before the Abyss Demons were able to break through the defenses of the Abyss Guards.
This was the first time that they had ever seen the Abyss Demons this determined.
For most of the captains, they couldn’t help feeling that there was something that was very off about all of this.
After all, there had to be a reason that the Abyss Demons were acting this way to begin with.
"I’ll go." Captain Fang said all of a sudden.
The other captains were caught off guard when they heard this before shaking their heads to reject this.
Captain Fang calmly said, "I’m the best person to handle this, aren’t I?"
But once again, the other captains shook their heads again.
It wasn’t that they didn’t agree with him since they knew what his familiar was and what power it had. If they were to send him, then it was very likely that he would have been able to take care of the Abyss Demons.
The problem was that Captain Fang’s familiar didn’t have the stamina to keep going.
It could even be said that Captain Fang’s familiar should be treated as a trump card if there was something powerful that suddenly appeared. Which was why they didn’t want to send him out this early or they would certainly regret it.
It wasn’t as if he couldn’t recover, it was just that there was no knowing what would show up.
So in the end, two of the captains said with sighs, "Let me go instead."
After they both said this, they looked at each other as if they were competing.
After all, they were both choosing to sacrifice themselves and the other was getting in the way.
Seeing this, the other three captains went forward to mediate since this wasn’t the time for them to be fighting with each other.
Though Captain Fang had been the first to volunteer, it wasn’t as if he was actually planning on going. He was doing all of this as nothing more than a play to inspire the other captains to act.
What he needed the most right now was to get them out of the way just in case anything unexpected happened.
Even if things seemed to be going according to plan, he needed to weaken them as much as possible. That would just make it much easier for his plan to go accordingly.
It was made even better when there was another breach behind them.
The Abyss Demons had punched another hole in the defensive lines, which meant that there were two different places that needed help.
When the captains saw this, they immediately stopped arguing and sent the two captains that had volunteered out. Since there were two of them and two different spots that needed help, it was only natural that they would split up to deal with them.
Only it didn’t seem like these places were easy to deal with.
The moment that the captains arrived, there were more Abyss Demons that suddenly surged forward. With the way that these Abyss Demons suddenly appeared, it was as if they had been waiting for them the entire time.
It seemed like the Abyss Demons had indeed been targeting the captains all along as they pushed through.
It didn’t take long for them to surround the areas that the captains appeared in and soon the others lost sight of them.
At the same time, it wasn’t as if they could send more people to help those captains since they were already short on manpower. If the remaining three captains were to go forward as well, it would mean leaving the portal unguarded and that was the last thing that they could do.
It really seemed like the situation was becoming worse and worse as more and more Abyss Demons surged forward.
They had never seen this kind of tide of Abyss Demons before.
"Just what happened that they sent these many Abyss Demons to attack us?"
