The Villain's Second Life
Chapter 40: The Choice of the Golden Witness
The black tower began to collapse.
Stone broke away from its upper levels and fell into the courtyard. The academy shook beneath Ethan Vale’s feet, while black cracks spread across the walls like veins.
At the top of the tower stood Seraphina Crow.
Her silver blade rested against her chest.
Behind her, a massive golden eye opened inside the darkness.
The Observer had anchored itself to the academy through her.
The students were still gathered in the courtyard.
Some were injured.
Some were crying.
All of them were watching Ethan.
The Sword Fragment burned in his hand.
The choice was obvious.
Cut Seraphina away from the academy.
Save the students.
Let her die.
The Observer spoke through the tower.
**Cut her.**
Seraphina’s black eyes remained fixed on Ethan.
"I am ready."
Ethan stared at her.
"You want me to kill you."
"I want you to stop the connection."
"That is not what I asked."
Seraphina’s expression did not change.
"The connection is fused to my soul. If you cut it, I will not survive."
Noah Blake stepped beside Ethan.
"Then we find another way."
Seraphina looked toward him.
"There is no other way."
"There is always another way."
"That is something people say before making things worse."
Noah pointed toward the tower.
"You are the one who erased Ethan’s memories. You should know that better than anyone."
Seraphina’s expression softened.
"I know."
The golden eye behind her widened.
Black light flowed through the tower.
The students began screaming.
Some of them fell to their knees as the Observer reached into their Mana Cores.
Professor Aurelia Voss raised her staff.
"Ethan, we are running out of time!"
Ethan looked at the students.
The black symbols over their hearts had returned.
The Observer was using the academy as a giant seal.
Seraphina was its anchor.
If Ethan cut her connection, the seal would collapse.
But if he did nothing, the Observer would take control of every student inside the academy.
The Sword Fragment whispered inside him.
**The price must be chosen.**
Ethan had heard those words before.
He had once believed that meant someone had to die.
But the fragments had taught him otherwise.
A price did not always need to be blood.
Sometimes it was authority.
Sometimes it was memory.
Sometimes it was the right to decide for others.
Ethan looked at Seraphina.
"What did you promise the Observer?"
Seraphina’s eyes narrowed.
"I promised nothing."
"Then why is it using you?"
"Because I allowed it to enter."
"That is not an answer."
"It wanted access to the academy. I gave it access."
"Why?"
The tower shook violently.
Seraphina looked down at the students.
"To protect them."
Ethan almost laughed.
"Everyone says that."
"And everyone is sometimes telling the truth."
The golden eye moved behind her.
A voice filled the academy.
**She opened the way willingly.**
Ethan raised his sword.
"Why?"
**Because she understood the danger.**
Seraphina looked at the eye.
"Do not speak for me."
**You asked for a vision of the world beyond the Door.**
The students grew quiet.
Ethan looked at her.
"You wanted to see what was beyond reality."
"I wanted to understand it."
"And you thought the Observer would show you?"
"I thought it would answer my questions."
"It used you."
"Yes."
"You knew?"
"I knew too late."
The black light around her intensified.
Seraphina’s body shook.
The silver blade in her hand began to glow.
"I thought I could control the connection."
"You were wrong."
"Yes."
"Just like Cassian."
Seraphina’s eyes closed briefly.
"Yes."
The tower cracked again.
A large section collapsed behind her.
Seraphina stepped toward the edge.
"Ethan, cut me now."
"No."
"If you wait, the Observer will enter the students."
"I know."
"Then why are you hesitating?"
"Because you are not the only one connected to it."
Ethan activated the Witness.
The world around him changed.
He saw the academy as it truly was.
Black threads ran through the floors, the towers, the classrooms, and the students.
But one thread extended beyond Seraphina.
It passed through the academy walls.
Across the city.
Toward Greymoor’s oldest foundation.
The academy had not been built on ordinary land.
It had been constructed above an ancient fragment.
A fragment that had remained dormant beneath the school for centuries.
The Observer was not using Seraphina as its only anchor.
It was using the academy itself.
Seraphina was only the visible connection.
Ethan followed the thread with his eyes.
It descended beneath the central courtyard.
Into the old sealed classroom.
The place where the first Origin Class had begun.
The place where Ethan had first encountered the Observer.
Ethan’s expression changed.
The academy was not a prison.
It was a key.
And Seraphina had not opened it.
She had only awakened it.
"Seraphina," Ethan said.
"What?"
"The connection does not end with you."
"I know."
"You knew?"
"I suspected."
"Why did you not tell me?"
"Because you would have tried to destroy the academy."
"I still might."
"You will not."
"Why?"
"Because you finally understand what it is."
Ethan looked toward the center of the courtyard.
Beneath the stones, the Third Fragment pulsed.
Knowledge.
The academy had been built around it.
Not to protect it.
To study it.
The Third Fragment was the oldest fragment remaining outside Ethan’s soul.
It had been connected to the academy for generations.
The Observer was using Knowledge as a lens.
Through it, the entity could see every spell, memory, and Mana Core within Greymoor.
Ethan turned to Professor Voss.
"Can you evacuate the students?"
"Not while the academy is sealed."
"Can you break the seal?"
"Not without destroying the central foundation."
"What would that do?"
"It would kill the Third Fragment."
Ethan looked toward the tower.
The black light spread across the courtyard.
The Observer was already reaching the Third Fragment.
If it took Knowledge, it would understand the structure of every fragment.
It would know how to destroy the shared lock.
The Sword Fragment formed fully in Ethan’s hand.
He looked at Seraphina.
"I am not going to cut you."
Her expression became tense.
"Then you will let the students die."
"I am going to cut the academy."
Seraphina stared at him.
"That will destroy the Third Fragment."
"Yes."
"It will erase thousands of years of magical knowledge."
"Yes."
"It may destroy the academy."
"Yes."
"You are willing to sacrifice all of that?"
"No."
Ethan looked toward the courtyard.
"I am willing to let it choose its own future."
The Identity Fragment responded.
The students began to move.
The black symbols over their hearts flickered.
Ethan’s voice carried through the courtyard.
"Everyone, listen to me!"
The students turned.
"The academy is connected to an ancient fragment. The Observer is using it to control the structure of this place."
A student shouted:
"What do you want us to do?"
"Choose whether to leave."
The black symbols brightened.
Ethan continued:
"The academy may collapse when the connection is cut. Some of you may lose access to your current spells. The magical foundation may be destroyed."
Fear spread through the students.
"But if you remain, the Observer may use you as vessels."
Seraphina looked down at him.
"You are asking children to choose between death and losing their magic."
"I am telling them the truth."
"You are placing the burden on them."
"No."
Ethan raised the sword.
"I am refusing to decide their lives for them."
The students looked at one another.
A young boy near the fountain stepped forward.
"If we leave, can we survive?"
"Yes."
"If we stay?"
"You may fight."
"Can we help?"
"Possibly."
The boy looked toward the other students.
Then toward the tower.
"I choose to stay."
A girl beside him stepped forward.
"So do I."
More students joined them.
Some moved toward the academy gates.
Others remained in the courtyard.
No one was forced.
No one was commanded.
The black symbols over their hearts began to fade.
The Observer reacted.
The golden eye behind Seraphina widened.
**Choice is irrelevant.**
Ethan looked upward.
"It is the only thing you cannot control."
**You are teaching them to resist their origin.**
"They are not your origin."
**They are connected to the fragments.**
"Connection is not ownership."
Ethan raised the black sword toward the tower.
The Sword Fragment began absorbing the students’ choices.
Not their magic.
Their consent.
Those who chose to remain gave a small portion of their Mana Core willingly.
Those who chose to leave were protected by the Identity Fragment.
The academy’s black seal cracked.
Seraphina looked at Ethan.
"You are using the Sword to divide the connection."
"Yes."
"Between the students and the academy."
"Between the students and the Observer."
"And me?"
Ethan looked at her.
"The connection through you will remain."
Seraphina’s eyes widened.
"What?"
"You are not the anchor."
"I am."
"You are the gatekeeper."
"What is the difference?"
"The anchor is used. The gatekeeper chooses whether the gate opens."
The silver blade in Seraphina’s hand began to shine.
The black light surrounding her weakened.
The Observer’s voice became violent.
**Do not believe him.**
Seraphina looked toward the golden eye.
"You lied to me."
**You asked to see beyond the world.**
"You never said the world would become the vessel."
**You did not ask.**
Seraphina’s face hardened.
Ethan raised the sword.
"Seraphina, close the gate."
"I cannot."
"You can."
"The connection has entered my soul."
"Then use it."
"If I resist, it will tear me apart."
Ethan stepped toward the tower.
"Then resist."
The Observer unleashed a wave of black energy.
The tower shook.
Students were thrown across the courtyard.
Elena raised an ice barrier.
Adrian reinforced it with golden magic.
Noah ran between the students, helping the injured reach the gates.
Professor Voss began casting a crimson spell around the central foundation.
Ethan climbed the broken tower stairs.
Every step brought him closer to Seraphina.
Black light attacked him from every direction.
The Crown protected his mind.
The Witness revealed the false paths.
Knowledge mapped the tower.
The Sword cut the attacking spells.
The Identity Fragment kept the academy from recognizing him as an enemy.
Ethan reached the top.
Seraphina stood only a few steps away.
The golden eye filled the space behind her.
The black light had almost consumed her.
"You should leave," she said.
"You said that before."
"This time I mean it."
"I do not."
The Observer spoke through her.
**She will die if you continue.**
Ethan looked at Seraphina.
"Is that true?"
"Yes."
"Can you survive if the connection is closed?"
"No."
The answer was quiet.
For a moment, Ethan remembered the first time he had met her.
She had stood before the First Door with a silver blade in her hands.
She had promised to kill him if he became a danger to the world.
She had erased his memories because he had asked her to.
She had hidden the truth.
She had lied.
She had protected him.
All of those things could be true at the same time.
Ethan lowered his sword.
Seraphina’s expression changed.
"What are you doing?"
"Choosing a different price."
The Sword Fragment pulsed.
Ethan placed his hand over the golden mark on Seraphina’s chest.
The Observer forced its presence toward him.
**You cannot take what belongs to me.**
Ethan pulled.
The black connection between Seraphina and the Observer moved into his palm.
Pain tore through his body.
The fragments inside him screamed.
The Observer tried to enter Ethan’s soul.
The Identity Fragment resisted.
Ethan’s memories began to fracture.
He saw the laboratory.
Darius.
Evelyn.
Veyron.
Seraphina.
The academy.
Noah.
Elena.
All of them blurred together.
The Observer whispered:
**You are a vessel.**
Ethan gritted his teeth.
"No."
**You were created to carry us.**
"I was created for a purpose."
**You belong to the First Sovereign.**
"I do not belong to anyone."
The connection reached his heart.
The First Sovereign’s mark answered from behind the First Door.
The Observer attempted to merge with both.
Ethan understood its plan.
It wanted to use him as a bridge between the First Sovereign and the world.
His body.
His fragments.
His identity.
All of them were necessary.
Ethan raised his free hand.
The Identity Fragment created a boundary around his soul.
The Sword entered the connection.
The Ninth Fragment appeared as a black circle.
The shared lock activated.
The Observer was no longer connected only to Seraphina.
It was connected to Ethan.
And through Ethan, to everyone who had chosen the shared seal.
Ethan pulled the connection wider.
The Observer screamed.
Seraphina fell to her knees.
Ethan held the black thread between them.
"Seraphina."
She looked up.
"Close the gate."
"I cannot."
"You can."
"It will destroy you."
"It will not."
"That is a lie."
"It is a choice."
Ethan gave her the silver blade.
Seraphina stared at it.
The blade had been used to erase his memory.
It had been used to protect the world.
Now it rested in her hand again.
"What do you want me to do?"
"Cut the connection."
"Between you and the Observer?"
"No."
Ethan looked at the black tower.
"Between the academy and the First Door."
Seraphina understood.
The academy was still the key.
If she used the silver blade to cut the ancient foundation, the Third Fragment would be destroyed.
But the students would be freed.
The Observer would lose its lens.
The academy might survive.
Seraphina rose.
The black light around her began to fade.
"You are asking me to destroy the place I spent centuries protecting."
"I am asking you to protect the people inside it."
She looked toward the courtyard.
Students were fleeing through the gates.
Others stood beneath the barriers, helping their classmates.
Seraphina raised the silver blade.
The Observer tried to stop her.
Black chains wrapped around her arms.
Ethan held the connection.
The Sword Fragment cut through the chains.
Seraphina stepped toward the central tower.
The golden eye screamed.
**You are nothing without me.**
Seraphina looked at it.
"I was nothing when I believed you."
She raised the blade.
"I was afraid when I followed you."
The silver light grew brighter.
"But I am not afraid now."
Seraphina drove the blade into the tower.
The entire academy went silent.
The Third Fragment awakened beneath the ground.
A wave of knowledge passed through the towers.
Every spell ever studied at Greymoor.
Every book in the library.
Every memory held by the academy.
All of it became light.
The light rose through the tower and entered the students.
Knowledge was not destroyed.
It was released.
The Third Fragment broke apart.
The connection to the First Door snapped.
The Observer was thrown out of the academy.
The golden eye behind Seraphina shattered.
Black light exploded across the sky.
Ethan felt the connection leave his soul.
Seraphina collapsed.
Ethan caught her.
The tower began to fall.
The academy’s walls cracked.
The black light disappeared.
The remaining students ran toward the courtyard gates.
Ethan carried Seraphina down the broken stairs.
Elena reached him.
"Is she alive?"
Ethan looked at Seraphina.
Her breathing was faint.
"Yes."
Seraphina opened her eyes.
The black circles around her pupils were gone.
Her golden eyes were clear again.
She looked at Ethan.
"Did we save the academy?"
Ethan glanced around.
The towers were damaged.
The central dome had collapsed.
The library was half-destroyed.
But the students were alive.
"The academy survived."
Seraphina gave a weak smile.
"Then I suppose I did too."
Ethan lowered her carefully.
The silver blade had disappeared.
The Third Fragment no longer existed as a single crystal.
Its knowledge now lived within everyone who had chosen to remain connected to it.
The academy had lost its ancient power.
But it had gained something else.
Freedom.
A shadow appeared at the far end of the courtyard.
Veyron.
He stood beneath the broken archway, watching Seraphina.
"You cut the academy away from the Door," he said.
Seraphina looked at him.
"I did."
"You destroyed the Third Fragment."
"I released it."
"You weakened the seal."
"I freed the students."
Veyron’s gaze moved toward Ethan.
"You keep choosing people over power."
Ethan stood.
"Yes."
Veyron smiled faintly.
"Then you will lose everything."
Before Ethan could answer, Veyron raised his hand.
A black mark appeared beneath the academy.
The ground split open.
The students screamed.
From below the ruins rose a massive violet crystal.
Not the Third Fragment.
Something else.
The crystal pulsed with the same rhythm as the First Sovereign’s heart.
Veyron’s expression changed.
"This was not part of the academy."
Ethan looked at him.
"Then what is it?"
Veyron stared at the crystal.
"The First Sovereign’s hidden core."
The crystal opened.
A child’s face appeared inside it.
The same face Ethan had seen beyond the First Door.
The face of the First Sovereign.
It looked directly at Ethan.
Then it smiled.
**You saved the gatekeeper.**
The academy began to collapse again.
**Now save yourself.**
The crystal shattered.
A violet hand reached out from inside it.
And behind that hand, something began climbing into the world.
