The Villain's Second Life
Chapter 39: The Academy Under Black Light
The black tower exploded.
A wave of darkness spread across Greymoor Academy.
The outer walls cracked.
The floating bridges collapsed.
The protective barriers shattered one after another, releasing showers of golden sparks over the city.
Students screamed as the academy’s towers tilted beneath them.
Ethan Vale stood in the ruined throne room of the Royal Palace, staring at the distant destruction.
Seraphina Crow remained on the highest tower.
Her golden eyes had turned completely black.
Behind her stood Veyron.
Impossible.
He had been taken by the Observer.
Then he had appeared inside the palace battle.
Cassian had died severing the connection.
And now Veyron stood beside Seraphina at Greymoor Academy as if none of it had happened.
Noah Blake looked through the broken window.
"Didn’t Veyron disappear?"
"Yes," Ethan said.
"Was he not pulled toward the First Door?"
"Yes."
"Did Cassian’s sacrifice not cut the Observer’s connection?"
"Yes."
Noah stared at him.
"Then why is Veyron standing on the academy tower?"
Ethan watched the dark silhouette.
"Because that may not be Veyron."
A second explosion struck the academy.
The eastern tower split from the middle and collapsed into the courtyard.
Professor Aurelia Voss turned toward Ethan.
"The students are still inside."
"I know."
"The academy’s emergency barriers are failing."
"I know."
"Then we need to move."
Princess Lyra was lying on a couch near the shattered throne. The White Flame had returned beneath her skin, but its glow was faint.
Elena Frost sat beside her, holding one of the princess’s hands.
Lyra’s breathing was steady.
She had survived.
But the connection to the Observer had left pale cracks of light across her arms.
Ethan approached her.
"Can you stand?"
Lyra opened her eyes.
"Yes."
"That was not the question."
She tried to rise.
Elena helped her.
Lyra’s knees shook, but she remained upright.
"The academy," she said.
"We are going."
"My brother is there."
Ethan looked at her.
"You have a brother?"
"Prince Alaric."
"The Royal Council never mentioned him."
"They have not mentioned many things."
Lyra looked toward the distant academy.
"He was sent there two years ago under a false name. The court believed it would protect him from those who wanted to use the royal bloodline."
Ethan studied the black light covering the academy towers.
"Then he may be one of the reasons it was attacked."
Lyra’s expression tightened.
"Help me reach him."
Ethan nodded.
The remaining airship hovered above the palace courtyard.
Its hull was damaged, one engine was missing, and the main crystal flickered between blue and black.
Noah looked at it.
"Are we sure that thing can fly?"
"No," Professor Voss replied.
"Then why are we getting on it?"
"Because the alternative is staying here while the academy collapses."
"That is a terrible alternative."
Ethan stepped aboard.
Elena helped Lyra onto the deck.
Adrian Cross followed, carrying a damaged golden spear.
Rowan remained behind with the soldiers and the wounded.
His Mana Core was still unstable, and he could not risk another long journey.
Before Ethan entered the airship, Rowan grabbed his arm.
"Bring them back."
Ethan looked toward the academy.
"I will."
Rowan’s grip tightened.
"Not only the princess."
Ethan understood.
"The students."
"And anyone else who can be saved."
Ethan nodded.
"I will."
The airship rose.
Greymoor Academy grew larger in the distance.
The closer they came, the clearer the damage became.
The academy’s central dome was covered in black veins.
The library tower had been pierced by a column of dark light.
The training grounds were surrounded by a circular barrier.
Inside it, hundreds of students were trapped.
Some fought shadows emerging from the ground.
Others tried to reach the gates.
The black light prevented them from leaving.
The academy itself had become a prison.
Professor Voss stared at the barrier.
"That is not ordinary corruption."
"No," Ethan said.
"It is an identity seal."
"What does that mean?"
"The academy is being forced to recognize one authority."
Ethan looked at the black tower.
"Whose?"
The answer came through the communication crystal.
Seraphina’s voice.
"Mine."
The crystal turned black.
Her voice echoed across the airship.
"Welcome back, Ethan."
Ethan stepped toward the crystal.
"What have you done?"
"I protected the academy."
"You destroyed the towers."
"I removed the parts that could be used against it."
"You trapped the students."
"To prevent them from being taken."
"By whom?"
"The same force that is using you."
Ethan’s eyes narrowed.
"You sound different."
Seraphina laughed softly.
"I sound honest."
The black crystal flickered.
For a second, her face appeared.
Her eyes were still golden.
But a thin black circle surrounded each pupil.
The mark of the Observer.
Ethan watched her carefully.
"Where is Veyron?"
"Behind me."
"Is he alive?"
"Define alive."
Noah leaned toward the crystal.
"That is never a good answer."
Seraphina’s eyes shifted toward him.
"You brought the comic relief."
"He is more useful than you are."
Noah looked at Ethan.
"Was that a compliment?"
"Do not become proud."
The academy barrier expanded.
Black light struck the airship.
Professor Voss shouted:
"Brace!"
The vessel tilted violently.
Elena raised both hands.
Ice spread across the hull, reinforcing the damaged frame.
Adrian slammed his golden spear into the deck.
A golden line formed beneath the ship.
Noah grabbed the railing with both hands.
Lyra fell against Elena.
Ethan stepped toward the front.
The Crown Fragment stirred.
The barrier around the academy was built from recognition.
It was not trying to destroy the ship.
It was trying to define it as an enemy.
Ethan raised his hand.
The Identity Fragment answered.
He did not command the barrier.
He challenged its definition.
"We are not an attack."
The barrier darkened.
Ethan continued:
"We are not the Observer."
The black light trembled.
"We are not the enemy."
The barrier cracked.
Seraphina’s voice returned through the crystal.
"You cannot enter by denying what you are."
"Then open the gate."
"I cannot."
"Why?"
"Because the academy no longer recognizes me as its master."
Ethan looked at the black veins across the towers.
"Then who does it recognize?"
Seraphina remained silent.
The communication crystal showed one final image.
A figure standing in the central courtyard.
A young man wearing the Greymoor Academy uniform.
He had black hair.
Violet eyes.
A familiar face.
But Ethan knew him.
The other Ethan.
The Identity Fragment’s former shape.
The false king.
No.
This version was different.
He wore no crown.
No armor.
No red light.
He stood calmly in the center of the academy, surrounded by black symbols.
The students were gathered behind him.
The figure looked up toward the airship.
Then he smiled.
Seraphina’s voice became quiet.
"The academy recognizes him."
Ethan felt the Seventh Fragment inside his soul react.
The figure was not a copy.
He was the part of Ethan that had remained inside the Identity Fragment after it merged with him.
The version of Ethan who had chosen to keep his past separate.
The part that had not been absorbed.
The part that believed Ethan Vale and Azeroth Veyr could not coexist.
Ethan stared at the figure.
"What is his name?"
Seraphina answered:
"Ethan Veyr."
The name struck harder than any spell.
The figure below lifted one hand.
The academy barrier opened.
Not for the airship.
For Ethan.
A path formed through the black light.
Professor Voss looked at him.
"It is inviting you in."
"I know."
"It may be a trap."
"I know."
Noah looked toward the opening.
"Could it be a trap that we do not enter?"
"No."
"Then why did I ask?"
Ethan stepped off the airship.
A black platform formed beneath his feet.
He descended through the barrier.
Elena followed.
Adrian, Noah, Professor Voss, and Lyra came behind them.
The moment they crossed the academy boundary, the world changed.
The airship disappeared above them.
The city vanished.
They were inside Greymoor Academy, but it no longer looked like the place Ethan knew.
The courtyard had become a black forest.
The towers were made of twisted stone.
The paths moved beneath their feet.
Classroom doors opened and closed by themselves.
The academy had become a living memory.
Professor Voss raised her staff.
It sputtered.
"The structure has been rewritten."
"By Ethan Veyr."
"By the Identity Fragment," Ethan corrected.
"That distinction may not matter."
"It matters to me."
A shadow moved through the black trees.
Then another.
Students appeared between the branches.
They were not attacking.
They stood frozen, their faces expressionless.
Each one had a black symbol over the heart.
Elena approached the nearest student.
"Are they alive?"
"Yes," Ethan said.
"Why are they frozen?"
"They are being preserved."
"By whom?"
A voice answered from the trees.
"By me."
Ethan turned.
Ethan Veyr stepped into the courtyard.
He looked exactly like Ethan.
But he carried himself differently.
His shoulders were straight.
His face was calm.
His eyes held no uncertainty.
The black uniform he wore was perfect, untouched by the destruction around him.
Behind him stood a tall figure in white armor.
The original vessel.
Its golden eye burned beneath its smooth mask.
Ethan’s gaze moved past the false version of himself.
"Where is Seraphina?"
Ethan Veyr smiled.
"She is preparing the final seal."
"And Veyron?"
"Preparing the second."
Ethan raised his sword.
The blade appeared with eight colors of light.
Ethan Veyr looked at it.
"You have gathered the fragments."
"I have."
"And you still believe they belong to you."
"They do not belong to anyone."
"That is the lie you tell yourself."
Ethan Veyr raised his hand.
The black symbols over the students’ hearts began glowing.
"They belong to the world."
The symbols linked together.
A web of black light formed across the courtyard.
"The world is unstable because the fragments are divided between too many wills."
Ethan looked at the students.
"You are using them as anchors."
"I am protecting them."
"You trapped them."
"I prevented them from being used by the Observer."
"By forcing them to carry your seal."
"They are safe."
Ethan stepped forward.
The web of black light tightened.
A student cried out.
Elena raised her sword.
"Release them."
Ethan Veyr looked at her.
"You are Elena Frost."
"Yes."
"The bloodline vessel."
"I am not a vessel."
"You have said that before."
The black symbols around the students pulsed.
Elena’s silver scar appeared.
The Sixth Fragment responded.
A thread of black ice extended from her chest toward Ethan Veyr.
Ethan cut it before it reached him.
The Sword Fragment flared.
Ethan Veyr smiled.
"You still protect people by cutting connections."
"I cut chains."
"You cut everything."
The original vessel moved.
It crossed the courtyard instantly.
Its hand struck Ethan’s chest.
The impact threw him through a stone wall.
He crashed into an empty classroom.
Desks shattered around him.
The golden eye of the vessel appeared through the broken wall.
Ethan rose.
The fragments inside him reacted.
The Crown attempted to command the vessel.
The command failed.
Knowledge revealed that the vessel’s body was connected to the academy itself.
The more the academy recognized it, the stronger it became.
Ethan Veyr stood behind it.
"You cannot defeat the First Vessel here."
"Then I will separate it from the academy."
"You cannot."
Ethan stepped forward.
The vessel attacked.
Its hand became a blade of white light.
Ethan blocked with the black sword.
The impact shook the classroom.
Elena entered from the broken wall and froze the vessel’s arm.
Adrian struck the frozen limb.
It shattered.
The limb reformed immediately.
Professor Voss cast a crimson spell across the ceiling.
The spell collapsed when the academy changed the room’s geometry.
Noah threw his knife.
The blade struck the golden eye.
The vessel stopped.
Ethan moved.
He did not attack the vessel.
He cut the black symbol beneath its feet.
The connection to the academy cracked.
The vessel staggered.
Ethan Veyr raised his hand.
The classroom walls closed around Ethan.
Black stone sealed him inside.
Elena struck the wall with her sword.
"It is not breaking!"
Ethan touched the stone.
The wall recognized him as an intruder.
The academy was obeying Ethan Veyr.
The Identity Fragment inside Ethan responded.
Ethan had entered the academy as a visitor.
Ethan Veyr was recognized as its master.
The only way to break the seal was to challenge the academy’s definition.
Ethan placed his hand against the wall.
"I am Ethan Vale."
The stone remained.
"I am Azeroth Veyr."
The wall shook.
"I am not separate from either."
The black stone cracked.
Ethan Veyr’s voice echoed through the academy.
"You do not belong here."
Ethan pushed harder.
"I created this place."
"You abandoned it."
"I returned."
"You died."
"I came back."
"You are not the same."
"No."
The wall began collapsing.
"I am more than I was."
The stone shattered.
Ethan stepped into the corridor.
The academy trembled.
Every classroom door opened.
Every black symbol lit.
Ethan Veyr’s calm expression finally changed.
"You cannot merge us."
"I am not trying to merge us."
"Then what do you want?"
Ethan walked toward him.
"To understand why you remained separate."
Ethan Veyr raised both hands.
The academy erupted.
Black chains shot from the floor and walls.
They wrapped around Ethan’s arms, legs, and throat.
The Original Vessel attacked again.
Ethan blocked, but the chains restricted his movement.
Ethan Veyr stood behind them.
"I remained separate because you were weak."
"I survived."
"You hesitated."
"I chose."
"You allowed others to influence you."
"I trusted them."
"You gave up the throne."
"I gave up the right to rule."
"You became dependent on people who would die without you."
Ethan broke one chain.
"They can live without me."
"You do not believe that."
Ethan broke another.
"You still think you are the only one who can save the world."
Ethan looked at him.
The words struck too close.
Ethan Veyr continued:
"You changed your name, your clothes, and your friends. But you still carry the same fear."
Ethan’s expression hardened.
"What fear?"
"That if you stop controlling everything, everyone will die."
The chains tightened.
The Original Vessel raised its hand.
Ethan’s body froze.
Ethan Veyr approached him.
"You want to be Ethan Vale."
He placed a hand against Ethan’s chest.
"But Azeroth Veyr is the only reason anyone is still alive."
The Seventh Fragment opened.
A silver door appeared inside Ethan’s soul.
Behind it was the child version of himself.
The promise.
The throne.
The memories.
Ethan Veyr tried to enter.
The Identity Fragment rejected him.
Ethan Veyr stepped back.
"You cannot deny me."
"I am not denying you."
Ethan raised the black sword.
"You are the part of me that still believes fear is the only protection."
The chains cracked.
"You are the part of me that wants to control every outcome."
The vessel attacked.
Ethan turned and cut its arm.
"You are the part of me that would sacrifice the academy to save the world."
The Original Vessel staggered.
The black symbols around the students dimmed.
Ethan Veyr’s expression became furious.
"And you think you are different?"
Ethan looked at him.
"I know I am not."
The sword turned silver.
"That is why I do not trust myself alone."
Ethan reached toward the people behind him.
Elena.
Noah.
Adrian.
Professor Voss.
Lyra.
Their presence entered the Identity Fragment.
Not as power.
As proof.
Ethan Veyr stepped backward.
The academy began rejecting him.
The black symbols over the students faded.
The trees disappeared.
The classrooms returned.
The towers straightened.
Greymoor Academy began restoring itself.
Ethan Veyr grabbed the nearest student.
A black thread extended from his hand.
"Then choose," he shouted.
The student’s body rose into the air.
"Your friends or the academy."
Ethan froze.
Ethan Veyr smiled.
"Save them, and the academy collapses."
The Original Vessel moved behind the other students.
"Save the academy, and they become the new vessels."
The black tower above the academy began to crack.
Seraphina’s voice echoed through the halls.
"Ethan, do not choose."
Ethan looked toward the highest tower.
Seraphina stood there, black eyes glowing.
The figure behind her was Veyron.
But this time, Ethan sensed the difference.
The figure was not Veyron.
It was an illusion created by the Observer.
The real Veyron was elsewhere.
Seraphina raised a silver blade.
"The academy is not the battlefield."
"Then where is it?"
"Inside you."
The black symbols over the students flared.
Ethan Veyr pulled harder.
The students began to scream.
Ethan felt the Crown Fragment awaken.
The old command rose within him.
Control the academy.
Command the students.
Destroy Ethan Veyr.
The easiest solution was waiting.
Ethan raised his hand.
Then lowered it.
He looked at the students.
"Listen to me."
The students’ eyes turned toward him.
"You are not vessels."
The black threads tightened.
"You are not weapons."
The academy shook.
"You are not sacrifices."
The chains around Ethan Veyr began to crack.
"You are students."
The Identity Fragment spread across the courtyard.
"Your choices belong to you."
The black symbols dimmed.
Ethan Veyr screamed.
The Original Vessel raised both hands.
The academy tried to erase Ethan’s voice.
But the students repeated it.
One by one.
"We are not vessels."
"We are not weapons."
"We are not sacrifices."
The black web collapsed.
The students fell safely to the ground.
Ethan Veyr staggered.
The Original Vessel’s golden eye cracked.
Ethan approached his other self.
"You were right about one thing."
Ethan Veyr raised his head.
"What?"
"I am afraid."
Ethan’s sword lowered.
"I am afraid that if I stop controlling everything, people will suffer."
Ethan Veyr smiled.
"Then become stronger."
"I will."
"Take the throne."
"No."
"Use the fragments."
"I will."
"Command them."
"No."
Ethan raised his hand toward the students.
"I will give them a choice."
The Seventh Fragment opened completely.
Ethan Veyr’s body began dissolving into silver light.
"You cannot exist without me."
"I know."
"Then I will return."
"I know."
"You will need me."
"I know."
The final part of Ethan Veyr entered Ethan’s chest.
The academy went silent.
The Original Vessel collapsed.
Its golden eye faded.
The black light covering Greymoor Academy vanished.
For several seconds, Ethan stood alone in the courtyard.
Then his knees gave out.
Elena caught him.
Noah rushed toward them.
"Are you alive?"
Ethan opened his eyes.
"Yes."
"Did you absorb the other Ethan?"
"No."
"Then where did he go?"
Ethan looked at the silver light fading from his hands.
"He is still here."
Noah sighed.
"I was afraid you would say that."
A figure appeared on the highest tower.
Seraphina.
Her eyes were still black, but the darkness around them was fading.
She looked down at Ethan.
"The academy is safe."
"For now."
"The Observer has been forced out."
"Not completely."
"No."
"Where is Veyron?"
Seraphina did not answer.
Ethan stood slowly.
"Where is he?"
A second figure appeared beside her.
Veyron.
This time, the presence was real.
His body was wounded, but he was alive.
He looked toward Ethan.
"The Observer used my image to mislead you."
"Why?"
"To make you believe I was the one controlling the academy."
"Were you not?"
"No."
"Then who was?"
Veyron looked at Seraphina.
"She was."
The black marks around Seraphina’s eyes brightened.
Ethan raised his sword.
Seraphina smiled sadly.
"I had no choice."
"You always say that."
"I know."
"Then make one."
Seraphina lifted the silver blade.
Behind her, the black tower began to open.
A massive golden eye appeared inside it.
The Observer had been hiding within the academy itself.
Using Seraphina as its final anchor.
Seraphina looked at Ethan.
"If you want to save the students, you must cut me away from the academy."
Ethan understood.
The Sword Fragment formed in his hand.
The same choice as Cassian.
The same choice as Lyra.
A vessel.
A connection.
A sacrifice.
Seraphina stepped toward the edge of the tower.
"I am ready."
Ethan looked at the students.
Then at Seraphina.
Then at the golden eye behind her.
The Observer spoke through the academy:
**Cut her.**
The black tower began collapsing.
Seraphina raised the silver blade.
"Choose quickly, Ethan."
And for the first time, Ethan did not know whether Seraphina wanted him to save her...
or kill her.
