the Villainess they took for granted
Chapter 190: V2- - 9: The opening ball II
(Adrian pov)
Adrian knew Marian was there.
He had known before he entered the ballroom.
Her arrival had been noted by the Imperial household the moment her carriage passed through the palace gates. He had been informed of it without needing to ask.
He simply had not looked for her.
There was no reason to.
Not yet.
He took his place at the head of the ballroom, the familiar weight of the Imperial position settling around him as naturally as it had over the past year.
The musicians waited.
The guests waited.
The officials waited.
Adrian looked across the assembled crowd.
He could feel the expectation in the room.
Every family wanted something from tonight.
Every mother was watching him.
Every debutante was wondering whether she would catch his attention.
He had expected it.
He had prepared for it.
None of it interested him particularly.
His gaze remained forward.
He did not look toward Marian.
Not because he didn’t want to.
Because he did.
And that was precisely why he wouldn’t.
He had spent too long learning restraint to abandon it now.
The doors opened again.
The first debutante was announced.
A young lady from one of the Empire’s oldest houses stepped forward.
She approached with the careful confidence of someone who had spent months preparing for this moment.
She curtsied.
"Your Majesty."
Adrian inclined his head.
"Lady—"
He addressed her by name, offered the appropriate courtesy, and dismissed her with a few polite words.
She returned to her family.
The next name was announced.
Then another.
Adrian watched each woman with the attention expected of an Emperor.
He listened.
He remembered their names.
He asked the occasional question when courtesy required it.
Nothing more.
From the outside, he appeared perfectly engaged.
Calm.
Attentive.
Impartial.
Exactly as he should be.
Inside, however, his awareness remained elsewhere.
He knew where Marian was.
He didn’t need to look.
He could almost feel the weight of her presence somewhere beyond the immediate circle of guests.
She was watching.
Perhaps.
Or perhaps she wasn’t.
Adrian found himself wondering which.
The thought almost amused him.
Marian had never been particularly good at pretending indifference when something genuinely interested her.
But eighteen months was a long time.
Perhaps she had changed.
Perhaps he had underestimated how much.
Another debutante approached.
Adrian turned his attention toward her.
"Your Majesty."
"Lady—"
The presentation continued.
One after another.
The young women came forward.
Beautiful.
Well-bred.
Accomplished.
Each represented a family that would be very pleased to see its daughter become Empress.
Adrian understood the significance of every introduction.
He understood the alliances being offered.
The fortunes.
The political advantages.
The expectations.
He could have chosen any of them.
And yet his mind kept returning to one woman who wasn’t standing before him at all.
Marian.
He had spent eighteen months waiting.
Not idly.
Not helplessly.
Waiting.
There had been no need to hurry her grief.
No need to summon her back.
No need to remind her of him.
Now she was here.
That was enough.
For the moment.
Adrian’s expression remained unchanged as another debutante curtsied before him.
"Your Majesty."
He looked at her.
And gave her the same measured courtesy he had given the others.
He would not let Marian see him searching for her.
He would not let her know that her presence had unsettled him.
He would not let Marian see him searching for her.
He would not let her know that her presence had unsettled him.
He had no reason to reveal that yet.
She had returned to the capital after eighteen months away.
She had entered the Season.
There was only one reason Marian would do both.
She was looking for a husband.
Adrian had expected it.
In fact, he had been counting on it.
He had known that eventually she would have to think about her future.
And now she was here.
Exactly where he had wanted her to be.
But what she would do once she began looking was another matter.
Perhaps she would compare the men presented to her.
Perhaps she would consider their families, their positions, their fortunes.
Perhaps she would look for something else entirely.
Adrian didn’t know.
He could only presume.
But whatever she was looking for, he intended to make certain that she found him.
He had no intention of standing aside while Marian searched the capital for another man.
There would be no second Cassian.
No other man would be allowed to take the place Adrian had wanted for himself.
He had already made certain of that.
Now Marian was here.
She was free.
And Adrian was the Emperor.
He had everything he needed.
He only had to see what she would do.
Another debutante approached.
Adrian turned his attention toward her.
"Your Majesty."
He inclined his head.
"Lady—"
The presentation continued.
One after another, the young women came forward.
Adrian received them with the composure expected of him.
He listened.
He remembered their names.
He asked questions when courtesy required it.
He gave nothing away.
The court watched every gesture.
Every smile.
Every glance.
They were all waiting to discover which woman might eventually become Empress.
Adrian allowed them to speculate.
He had no need to announce his intentions.
His decision would come when he wanted it to.
For now, there was something far more interesting to observe.
Marian.
He still did not look toward her.
Not yet.
He wanted to know whether she would watch him.
Whether she would pay attention to the women being presented.
Whether she would remain indifferent.
Whether she would begin to understand what it meant to see him surrounded by women who would gladly become his wife.
He did not know what she would feel.
That was what he wanted to find out.
Because Marian had returned.
And whatever reason she had for entering the Season, she was now standing in a room where the Emperor himself was being offered a parade of potential brides.
Adrian continued receiving them.
Calm.
Controlled.
Composed.
He did not need to hurry.
He had already waited eighteen months.
And now Marian was here.
She was looking.
That was enough.
The rest would unfold in its own time.
Adrian’s gaze remained forward as another debutante curtsied before him.
He received her with the same measured courtesy as the others.
Whatever Marian had come to the Season seeking, Adrian intended to make sure she eventually understood what stood before her.
Him.
