With the construction of the Decaying Throne complete, Gu Su raised his hand and called out, "Alice, the Watchtower is finished. You can go take your post."
The words had barely left his lips when a figure responded. Alice floated gracefully toward the Decaying Throne atop the northern wall.
Upon reaching the edge of the wall, she turned slightly and landed steadily upon the throne, a construct of intertwined vines, roots, and bones.
In the next moment, an eerie scene unfolded.
Alice’s body slowly began to merge with the Decaying Throne, as if the two were meant to be one. Her gaze swept past the wall, focusing on the unknown territory beyond the Graveyard Demon. Her expression was one of intense, vigilant concentration; she had fully assumed her duties as Lookout.
A moment later, Alice’s voice, carried on an imperceptible current of air, reached Gu Su’s ears with perfect clarity.
"My lord, I require two subordinates to act as Light Holders.
Also, once the Watchtower is active, it will consume one point of Yin Qi per hour. I just wanted to make you aware, my lord."
As Alice spoke, Gu Su caught something out of the corner of his eye. A small toy doll had materialized out of thin air in the corner of the tent. The doll’s movements and tone perfectly mimicked Alice’s words, down to the last syllable. Even the respectful tone of her voice was replicated flawlessly.
This sudden development made Gu Su raise an eyebrow. His gaze fell upon the tiny toy doll as he asked, "What is this all about?"
"Why is this little thing here, and how can it repeat what Alice is saying?"
However, no one answered his question. With a sigh of resignation, Gu Su raised his hand to summon the Graveyard Demon’s system panel, determined to figure out the doll’s origin.
After a brief inspection, Gu Su understood everything.
The tiny toy doll was, in fact, an evolution of the Destructive Military Band he had previously incorporated into the Graveyard Demon’s upgrade process.
Previously, the Destructive Military Band hadn’t been very useful. It could only produce a cacophony of random noises and play strange, unintelligible music, making it little more than a novelty.
At best, it was a tool for disturbing someone’s sleep at night.
But ever since it had been added to the upgrade process, the Graveyard Demon had completely devoured and absorbed the Destructive Military Band. It shed its original form, evolving into the small toy doll it was now—an exclusive, private communication line for the entire Graveyard Demon.
With this toy doll, Gu Su could contact anyone in any corner of the Graveyard Demon at any time. From Alice atop the wall to the Undead subordinates on the surface or deep underground, he could now have instantaneous Communication.
One might ask: if he had the White Crows for delivering messages, why bother with this toy doll?
The reasoning was actually quite simple; it was like the difference between a telephone and a letter in the real world.
One was instantaneous and efficient; the other, time-consuming and laborious.
One was for internal communications within the Graveyard Demon, while the other was for communicating with the outside.
Furthermore, unless given a specific order by Gu Su, the White Crows’ core mission was to explore unknown regions and gather external intelligence. Gu Su had only been using them to carry messages because he lacked proper Messengers.
This little toy doll, on the other hand, was far more practical. Any subordinate within the Graveyard Demon could use it without needing a special Summoning, and it enabled real-time conversation. It was convenient and efficient for both issuing orders and relaying information—far more useful than sending messages via White Crow.
Having figured out the whole story, Gu Su stopped dwelling on it. He looked back at the toy doll and asked in a deep voice, "Alice, will two subordinates to act as Light Holders be enough for now?"
Alice’s voice came through at once. "That will have to do for now, my lord.
According to standard procedure, four people are required.
Two to act as Light Holders, one to serve as a Deputy Lookout, and another as an Alternate Lookout. This ensures someone is monitoring the outside from the Watchtower twenty-four hours a day, without any lapses in coverage."
"Alright, I understand."
Gu Su nodded, his tone crisp. "I’ll send one Ghost and one Skeleton up to act as Light Holders for now. Once the Graveyard Demon has more Ghosts, I’ll replace the Skeleton with another Ghost for you. That should be more secure."
After speaking, Gu Su started to turn to leave the tent and summon them himself. But as he lifted his foot, he remembered the toy doll beside him. He stopped and simply gave the order to the tiny doll, "Have one Ghost and one Skeleton report to the top of the wall immediately to assist Alice as Light Holders."
The words had barely left his lips when Gu Su clearly heard a voice from outside the tent—identical to his own—repeating his command verbatim. The message broadcast to every corner of the Graveyard Demon.
’Well, I’ll be. This thing not only works as a private line but also as the Graveyard Demon’s internal broadcast system. That’s going to save me a lot of trouble.’
Gu Su mused to himself, a flash of approval in his eyes.
However, Gu Su didn’t have time to study the doll’s other functions right now. He knew there were more important matters to attend to in the newly cleared basement.
Constructing the three farm buildings was his top priority.
Without a moment’s delay, Gu Su issued a new command through the toy doll.
At his command, a steady stream of building materials from the Graveyard Demon’s stockpile was sent down into the empty basement.
The materials consisted mostly of basic Stone and Wood, enough to build the main structures. However, there were some special requirements as well.
For example, fertilizer was needed to cultivate mushrooms, and food was required to raise the poisonous insects and the Five Poison Chickens.
Fortunately, Gu Su was in the habit of collecting everything.
He had transported back the entire pool of sludge from his last encounter with the Wild Swamp Wolves.
This sludge could serve as a temporary fertilizer.
His Undead subordinates had killed plenty of small animals while on watch. Their undigested flesh, along with vines and leaves from the walls, could all be used as food.
All told, scraping together the necessary materials was proving to be quite simple.
Thus, with sufficient materials gathered, Gu Su began to operate the interface for the basement.
Aside from the research institute already occupied by the Corpse Witches, Gu Su left them ample room for expansion.
The eight-hundred-plus-square-meter underground space was rigidly divided into four sections.
The Corpse Witches’ research institute, Laboratory, and other facilities were moved directly to the area by the basement entrance. This would facilitate their comings and goings and also simplify their management of the basement.
Deeper inside, the Mushroom Cave was built along the basement’s outer walls, forming a large ring.
The Five Poison Chicken Coop was constructed in the very center of the basement, serving as the core of the entire ecosystem.
The Poisonous Insect Cave was situated between the other two structures, tucked into whatever space was available.
As all this was set in motion, a DING suddenly sounded in Gu Su’s ear.
