THE GREAT ALCHEMIST’S FURNACE
Zhao Ming took a deep breath.
"Next time, I’ll succeed." 𝒻𝑟ℯℯ
The child smiled.
"Maybe you will, maybe you won’t. Who knows?"
On the other side of the hall, Yun Che observed patiently and, this time, did not begin immediately.
First, he slowly analyzed the ingredients one by one. Only afterward did he examine the image of the patient. His problem was different.
It was not enough to produce an effective pill. He needed to produce a pill suitable for that specific condition.
Yun Che selected the ingredients and began the purification without using the System, conserving some Lust Points.
The first stage proceeded perfectly. The second did as well. He then began the fusion.
For several seconds, everything remained stable until the problem appeared.
The restorative essence was coming into conflict with the stabilizing energy. Yun Che reduced the flame, but the reaction continued.
He changed the spiritual circulation, and the mixture stabilized for a moment before losing its balance again.
Crack.
A crack appeared in the core. Yun Che immediately stopped the process.
Failure.
Guo Han looked at him without realizing it, his gaze moving from the furnace to the masked man.
"You made the same kind of mistake."
Yun Che looked at him.
Guo Han continued:
"In the first refinement, you tried to compensate for a reaction after it had already begun. You did something similar now. You tried to control the incompatibility after the two essences had already begun conflicting."
Yun Che remained silent for a moment before replying:
"Your analytical ability is quite good."
Guo Han calmly replied:
"Analysis is part of alchemy. If I can’t recognize where another alchemist is making a mistake, I have no right to believe that I completely understand what I’m doing."
Yun Che did not respond, and Guo Han returned to his own furnace. Something had changed in his gaze.
Now he knew that the masked man was not perfect. That made the man even more interesting.
Su Meilin noticed it as well. She watched Yun Che and sighed despite the mask, then looked at the furnace, her expression thoughtful.
"The interesting part isn’t that he failed. After all, the rules allowed two failures before he was eliminated."
Chen Ruyue asked:
"Then what is?"
Su Meilin replied:
"It’s what he does now."
Chen Ruyue looked at Yun Che again.
"Do you think he can do it?"
Su Meilin remained silent for several seconds.
"Yes. Just like before, he was only testing the furnace and the process. Now he has demonstrated his abilities."
Yun Che closed his eyes behind the mask.
System, you can consume Lust Points.
The interface appeared.
[Lust Points to be considered.]
[Beginning analysis.]
[Analyzing failure.]
[Problem identified.]
[The restorative essence is being absorbed before the meridians stabilize.]
Yun Che remained motionless as he watched the System’s analysis continue.
[Recommended adjustment.]
[Add the stabilizer before the main fusion.]
[Reduce temperature by 8%.]
[Change the order of the ingredients.]
[Control spiritual energy in short pulses.]
Yun Che opened his eyes, fully illuminated by the System’s guidance. He simply needed to follow a recipe generated by the System.
He began again, purifying the first ingredient, followed by the stabilizer. The flame remained low, and the process took longer.
When the essence began to form, Yun Che introduced small amounts of spiritual energy.
One.
Two.
Three.
The mixture remained stable. He added the restorative essence only afterward. As a result, the reaction began, but this time, there was no explosion.
The spiritual core slowly condensed, and a thin layer of blue energy enveloped the pill.
Lian Yue watched attentively, her eyes becoming more serious.
"Another perfect pill?"
Chen Ruyue asked:
"What do you mean?"
Lian Yue replied:
"He realized that the problem wasn’t only the formula. He’s treating the process as if he were monitoring the condition of the patient himself."
Chen Ruyue watched more closely.
"That’s true."
Guo Han also looked over.
"He’s not simply following a sequence."
His voice became more serious.
"He’s adapting the process."
Su Meilin remained silent, watching every movement, the way Yun Che controlled the flame.
The amount of spiritual energy, the small intervals between each stage everything was extremely precise.
When the pill took shape, Yun Che slowly reduced the flame, and the stabilization began.
After several seconds, he removed the result. A perfectly formed pill rested in his hand.
The child approached, took the pill, and examined it carefully. She made no attempt to provoke him.
She simply smiled.
"Now that’s more like it."
Yun Che remained silent as the child returned the pill.
"You’ve finally begun to understand what I’m trying to teach."
Yun Che asked:
"What exactly do you want us to understand?"
The child looked at all the participants.
"That alchemy isn’t simply putting ingredients into a furnace, controlling a flame, and waiting for a pill to appear."
She raised the pill.
"A formula can be perfect and still produce a poor result."
She looked at Lian Yue.
"Because the cultivator may be in a different condition."
She looked at Chen Ruyue.
"The ingredients may possess properties different from what you expect."
She looked at Guo Han.
"The order may be correct, but the control may be wrong."
She looked at Zhao Ming.
"And a fast execution does not mean a perfect execution."
Finally, her eyes returned to Yun Che.
"Alchemy means understanding what is before you and producing exactly what the situation requires."
The hall fell silent.
Yun Che looked deeply at the child.
"That’s the difference between someone who knows how to make pills and someone who truly understands alchemy."
Puff.
One of the lights disappeared, and at the same time, everyone looked upward. A beautiful Medusa girl had failed.
Her body was immediately enveloped by a spiritual formation, yet she still tried to speak:
"Wait! I can still continue. I just need one more attempt!"
The child looked at her.
"You have failed three times in this test. The rules are clear."
The Medusa clenched her teeth.
"I made it this far. You can’t simply expel me because of three failures."
The child replied:
"Take responsibility for your failures. Don’t blame others for your failure."
She pointed toward the extinguished light.
"You failed."
The Medusa fell silent.
"I’m not judging your courage. Nor your origin. Nor how long you managed to remain here."
The child paused.
"I’m judging whether your ability is sufficient for the next floor."
The formation completely enveloped the Medusa’s body, and in the next instant, she disappeared.
Another light flickered and went out.
Then another.
And another.
The expulsions began occurring one after another.
Several Medusas were the first to fall in significant numbers, not because the mausoleum favored humans, but because the judgment recognized neither race, territory, nor status.
Only ability.
Some less-prepared human cultivators also began losing their lights.
The hall gradually became emptier. Luo Xin raised his eyes, his expression becoming serious. He finally understood the true extent of this test.
It was not enough to make it far. One had to continue being deemed worthy on every new floor.
The child slowly walked among the remaining participants. Her face was still childlike, yet her eyes were different.
They were no longer observing the participants merely as toys. She was searching for something.
Perhaps someone, or an answer. Guo Han looked at Yun Che. Zhao Ming did as well, while Chen Ruyue continued observing his hands.
Su Meilin remained silent, trying to understand where that impossible-to-ignore precision came from.
Lian Yue simply committed everything she had seen to memory. The masked man had deliberately failed twice.
That only deepened the mystery. Meanwhile, Yun Che remained before the furnace, and behind the white mask, his eyes were calm.
The System had given him answers, but he was beginning to realize that answers alone would not be enough.
Every failure taught him something.
Every execution made his hands more precise.
The child stopped in the center of the hall, looked at the remaining lights, and her playful smile returned to her face.
"Continue."
The doors to the next floor began to open as hot wind swept through the hall.
"I want to discover something about my future inheritors."
No one answered as she smiled.
"I want to discover who among you will still be standing when we reach the true heart of the mausoleum."
The doors opened completely, and the presence emanating from the child’s body sent a shiver through everyone.
