The Smiling Death

Chapter 590: Danger waiting for him

"O-Okay..." Amon finally spoke, his expression still tense. "Now tell me... why did you want to reveal yourself to me?"

The golden screen flickered faintly.

[I had no choice.]

Amon frowned.

[Because of you, one of the Devils returned to the world far earlier than it was supposed to.]

Amon’s eyes widened slightly. He immediately knew who the System was referring to.

’Vetaal. Or, more accurately... Cruoris.’

That was his true name.

"Damn it!"

Amon clenched his teeth.

"Didn’t your creator or whoever assigned these missions to you, want this to happen?"

His voice became increasingly frustrated. He was being pulled in web of something very dangerous without knowing.

"Then what’s the problem? If they wanted me to go there, then surely they knew I might end up freeing him!"

The System remained silent for a moment before answering.

[Although I was created by that being, I cannot communicate with them whenever I wish.]

Amon’s expression became serious.

[Only they can initiate communication with me. And they never told me what they ultimately wanted you to accomplish in that place.]

The golden screen flickered.

[However, one thing is certain. You accomplished what they wanted you to accomplish.]

Amon narrowed his eyes.

[But freeing the Blood Devil was not part of it.]

The atmosphere suddenly became heavier.

[That was something they never predicted.]

Amon went silent. His previous anger had almost completely disappeared. In its place was something far more unsettling. It was uncertainty.

’This is getting more troublesome by the second...’

Amon lowered his gaze.

’Did... freeing Cruoris really have been a mistake?’

His fists tightened.

’But what other choice did we have?’

They were trapped in that place just like Cruoris. If hadn’t done it they would have never escaped that place alive.

Amon slowly rubbed his forehead.

"Okay..." This time it was Arnold who sighed. "Then someone better explain something to me."

He looked directly at the golden screen.

"Who exactly is this Blood Devil? Is he the being you were talking about earlier—the Devil Amon accidentally freed?"

[Yes.]

While Amon closed his eyes for a moment.

"Of course..."

He dragged a hand down his face.

"Then what do you want from me now?" His voice became colder. "Why did you want to communicate with me in the first place?"

He stared at the System suspiciously.

"Are you trying to use me again?"

[It is because we need your help...]

The System paused.

[...and you need ours.]

Amon scoffed.

"I don’t believe a word of that crap."

[Are you sure about that?]

The System’s simple question made Amon fall silent.

He didn’t answer immediately. As much as he hated the idea of being manipulated by the System again, he couldn’t simply walk away.

The System clearly possessed information he didn’t. Information about powerful beings. Information about events he had never even heard of.

And perhaps information about what was waiting for him in the future.

Amon finally spoke.

"How much do you know about the future?"

[I do not know the future.]

"Damn it!"

Amon’s patience snapped.

"What the hell do you mean you don’t know the future?!"

Arnold also frowned.

"Wait..."

He looked toward the golden screen.

"Then what about the missions you gave me based on knowledge of future events?"

[Listen carefully.]

The System’s mechanical voice remained calm.

[I do not possess knowledge of the future in the way you two believe.]

The screen flickered.

[What I possess is locked information.]

Amon’s expression became slightly more serious.

[Even I cannot freely access it. Certain information is only unlocked when specific conditions are met or when the appropriate time arrives. Only then can I access that information and determine whether Arnold needs to be informed. That’s how I am set to work.]

Arnold sighed. "So basically... even you don’t know everything."

[Correct.]

Amon folded his arms. "Still hard to believe."

He couldn’t help but remain suspicious. There were simply too many unanswered questions.

The System fell silent for several seconds. Then its screen flickered again.

[However...]

Both Amon and Arnold looked at it.

[Right now, I do not possess any specific information about what is going to happen.]

Amon raised an eyebrow.

"Then what do you have?"

[One warning.]

The atmosphere suddenly changed. Amon’s expression became serious. Arnold also straightened.

The System continued.

[Amon, something dangerous is going to happen near the end of your second semester of your second year at the academy.]

Amon’s pupils contracted.

[At present, I do not have any further information regarding the event. I do not know exactly what will happen, who will be involved, or how severe the situation will become.]

The golden screen remained suspended in the air.

[That is why I want you to work together with Arnold before that time comes.]

Amon remained silent.

[You must be prepared before the situation occurs. Otherwise, things may spiral beyond our ability to control.]

Amon’s expression gradually darkened.

[And I chose to reveal this information to you because you will be deeply involved in whatever happens. I might get more information about this in future. I will inform you then. Right now this is the only thing I got.]

Silence.

The forest seemed to grow unnaturally quiet.

Amon stared at the golden screen without saying a word.

His mind was racing. ’The end of my second semester... of my second year?’

He had barely finished his first year. There was still so much time before then.

Yet somehow, knowing that something dangerous was already waiting for him in the future made the distance feel meaningless.

Amon slowly lowered his head. He wanted to curse. He wanted to scream. He wanted to ask a hundred more questions.

But for the moment, nothing came out.

’Why the hell is my life always like this...?’

He let out a long, exhausted sigh.

"Of course..."

He rubbed his forehead.

"Why would I ever get to have a peaceful academy life?"

Arnold glanced at him.

Amon remained staring at the System. He had thought learning the truth would finally give him answers. Instead it had only created even more questions.

And now, somewhere in the future, something was waiting for him. Something dangerous. Something even the System couldn’t fully explain.

Amon sighed again.

’Damn my fucking luck.’
