Chapter 589: Talk with System [1]

"Yes, I remember everything. Why are you asking?"

[Because the worshippers of the First Devil of Sacrifice were responsible for sacrificing the lives of all the villagers that night.]

The System’s mechanical voice explained.

Amon went silent. He still remembered that day clearly.

Or rather that night. The night of loss. His expression darkened as memories resurfaced.

The countless corpses of all residents.

The horrifying abomination formed from the bodies of the people who had died in Mistvale Town.

He remembered fighting it alongside Selena, Vixra, and Jareth.

He remembered desperately trying to survive.

And most importantly he remembered losing Vixra and Jareth.

Those memories had never truly left him. And now the System was telling him that everything had been orchestrated by a Devil.

"Hey."

Amon’s eyes narrowed.

"Tell me. What are these Devils? Are they beings from Hell or something?"

[No. Far years ago, there existed seven beings called as Devils. They were beings who seek to become Gods. They don’t care what methods they have to use to achieve that goal. Their methods are cruel and evil.]

The System paused for a moment.

[Devils born from unknown origin, from remnants of ancient powers or blood of some God. Or anything that you couldn’t believe.]

[The First Devil of Sacrifice was the one behind everything that happened in Mistvale.]

Amon remained silent for a long while. Scarlett had asked Vetaal about Devils. And he replied similar.

Then he slowly looked toward the golden screen.

"You knew..."

His voice was quiet.

"You knew everything. So why didn’t you tell Arnold?"

[What difference would it have made? He wasn’t strong enough to survive that situation. Nor was there anyone who would have believed a young man’s words if he claimed that a cult was hiding in the town and planning a mass sacrifice. And...]

Amon sighed.

"Shut up."

The System fell silent.

"I already know what you’re going to say."

Amon glared at the screen.

"You’re going to tell me that it wouldn’t have changed anything. That we shouldn’t make huge changes to the future. Or something along those lines."

His grip tightened around his sword.

"But that’s not what I want to know."

His voice became colder.

"Why did you send me there?"

Amon’s eyes sharpened.

"Why did you want me to go to Mistvale Town?"

The System remained silent. It was really talking every carefully and thoughtfully with him.

Amon’s expression darkened further.

"Why?"

He took a step forward. "Did you want me to die?"

"Yes, why System? Why you wanted me to send him there?"

Even Arnold became curious. He had never truly understood why the System had involved Amon so many times.

Whenever that thought crossed his mind, he had simply pushed it aside.

He had been too obsessed with becoming stronger to question it deeply.

But now he couldn’t ignore it anymore.

"Say something."

Amon narrowed his eyes.

The System finally responded.

[Sigh... I was assigned this task by someone else. The one—]

"The being who created you?"

Amon immediately interrupted.

"The real boss behind you?"

The System paused.

Then it answered.

[Yes.]

Amon’s eyes narrowed further.

[He occasionally assigns me special missions involving you, Amon. I am also instructed to ensure that these events do not deviate too far from the predetermined course, as excessive changes could have a tremendous impact on the future.]

Amon fell silent.

His mind began piecing everything together.

’I went to Mistvale Town... And during that battle between life and death, I awakened my first ability.’

Death’s Shadow. His expression slowly changed. Then another memory surfaced.

Arnold had thrown him into that portal during the airship attack. He had ended up stranded on that mysterious island.

There, he had learned countless new things. He had awakened his second ability. Death’s Darkness.

He had encountered Vetaal.

A Devil, he had discovered the trapped village and helped its people escape.

Then came the battle against the Angel of Chaos.

And after that he had awakened his third ability.

Blood Manipulation. Amon’s breathing gradually became heavier.

’This... this isn’t normal.’

His eyes widened slightly. ’Does the person behind the System want me to awaken these abilities?’

He remained silent. He was thinking everything more calmly.

Arnold noticed his expression.

"Amon—"

Amon raised one hand, stopping him.

"Let me think, Arnold."

His voice was unusually serious.

"Just... let me think."

Arnold closed his mouth.

Neither he nor the System spoke again.

The forest became completely silent.

Amon lowered his gaze. He had always known that his abilities were strange.

Different, even the names themselves had always felt ominous.

Death’s Shadow. Death’s Darkness. And now blood Manipulation. He even controlled and used Vetaal powers while fighting Chaos Angel.

If that was not enough he had somehow made that purple flames of destruction his, giving them black color like Darkness and kill that angel by it.

He slowly rubbed his forehead.

’So there really is something special about my abilities.’

He sighed. ’That being didn’t want me to die.’

His eyes narrowed. ’He or she wanted me to awaken these abilities.’

But why? Amon raised his head and stared directly at the golden screen.

"Who is that person?"

His voice was calm, but there was an unmistakable edge to it.

"Who created you and assigned these missions involving me?"

For several seconds, the System didn’t respond.

[I cannot tell you about that person.]

Amon’s expression darkened. He expected such response.

But the System continued.

[However, you will eventually learn about him.]

Amon’s eyes narrowed.

[It is unavoidable.]

The System’s next words made both Amon and Arnold freeze.

[You will both meet him one day. Whether your wish or not.]

Silence.

Neither of them spoke. Even Arnold, who had been listening quietly until now, was visibly taken aback.

Amon’s heart began beating faster.

Thump.

Thump.

Thump.

For some reason, an inexplicable sense of unease settled over him.

Whoever this person was they had been watching him.

Perhaps for much longer than he had ever realized. Maybe that person was behind Amon’s reincarnation in this world.
