The Sky Was Never Young: Vampire System Apocalypse
Chapter 81: Silent Suffocation: The Sovereign’s Freeze
Deep in the suffocating blackness of the cellar, the mechanical facade of the perfect tactician finally shattered.
Cassius squeezed his eyes shut, his entire frame beginning to tremble violently against the cold stone floor. The heavy iron chains rattled sharply:
clink, clack- as a sudden, ragged gasp escaped his throat.
Calm down, his intellect demanded, a cold, desperate whisper inside his own mind.
’Calculate. Filter it out. You are a scientist here in the tunnel-visioned. You’re dream was to be a top analyst.’
But the system didn’t want an analyst right now. The spark needed fuel, and the fuel was raw, unadulterated human trauma.
Like a dam bursting, the memories he had meticulously locked away came roaring back, tearing through his mental defenses. He wasn’t just remembering facts; he was re-living them.
He saw the sky from the small ventilator of the cellar... the twisted, ash-choked horizon of an apocalypse that had ripped his world away before he had ever truly gotten to live. The sky was never young, he thought, his chest heaving as the weight of an entire dead era pressed down on his lungs.
Then, the image of Alissa pierced straight through his soul.
Alissa...
Her name bled into his thoughts like an open wound.
She was the love of his life. His first love. She was a pure, gentle soul who had never done anything wrong in her entire existence.
She had no idea what horrifying fate would await her in this cruel, dying world. Yet, even in her absolute final moments, when everything was collapsing around them, she had stubbornly, selflessly tried to protect him.
"She was innocent," Cassius choked out internally, a fierce, burning agony twisting his gut. His hands started to tremble as he kept both his palms on his head while tears started to fall out of his eyes as he thought:
She was never wrong. She gave everything just to keep me safe...
He put both his palms on his eyes and murmured voicelessly, ...and look at what you did to her, Vilucious. Look at what you allowed to happen to her!
Right behind his face came the horrifying images of his parents. One day they were normal, loving people, and then, in a terrifying blink of an eye, the apocalypse transformed them.
They were turned into bloodthirsty, grotesque monsters. He hadn’t known how it happened. He hadn’t known when the corruption had taken hold. He was just left staring at the unrecognizable husks of the people who raised him.
And then, the ultimate humiliation. The true cruelty of Vilucious.
Cassius remembered the cold clink of the heavy iron chains wrapping around his own limbs, forcing him into a slave’s existence. It was in that very state of absolute bondage that Vilucious had dragged them out.
The tyrant hadn’t just kept his monstrous parents locked away... he had used Cassius’s own infected mother and father as a sick, twisted bait.
Vilucious had paraded them in front of Cassius’s chained frame, dangling their wretched lives just to break him, just to extract information and force the slave to expose his secret of human memory.
"A toy," Cassius snarled internally, a tear of pure, agonizing frustration slipping down his cheek. The memories of injustice, pure agonizing sadness- hurting his pace as he thought at last:
He treated my family like bait. He turned my love into ash. He looks at my entire life and sees nothing but disposable livestock.
The sheer injustice of it- the accumulated, bleeding trauma of everything he had lost... boiled over into his blood. He wasn’t a robot. He was a man whose soul had been systematically ripped to shreds by the sovereign ruling from above.
Thump-thump! THUMP-THUMP!
His heart hammered like a war drum. The suppressed vampire veins in his neck bulged violently against the warding runes of the chains. The purple glow of the cuffs flickered and hissed, struggling to contain the absolute explosion of his emotional breakdown.
"Shatter," Cassius breathed, his voice cracking in the dark, his eyes snapping open to reveal a brilliant, terrifying predatory crimson that illuminated the damp stone around him.
"Shatter from the inside out, you miserable parasite."
The emotional breakdown was complete. The transmission was live.
-------
Far above the damp, vibrating stone of the castle cell, the oppressive silence of the royal bedchamber remained entirely unbroken. The contrast was absolute.
While the depths of the palace pulsed with a slave’s hidden fury, the sovereign’s private sanctuary was a haven of still, violet-hued twilight.
Outside the towering gold-trimmed doors, elite guards stood like statues. Inside, Lord Vilucious snored heavily, his massive frame buried deep within the plush layers of his royal bed. The dark sapphire silk of his robe pooled around him like stagnant water.
In his alcohol-induced slumber, his mind drifted through fragmented, chaotic dreams of conquest. He envisioned his kingdom expanding, his enemies broken beneath his armored heel, and his absolute authority unchallenged across the apocalyptic wasteland.
A slow, arrogant smile tugged at the corner of his lips in the dark.
"They are all nothing but stepping stones," a hazy, half-formed thought echoed lazily in his sleeping mind. "Kerwon... the court... the livestock... all born to serve my system."
Then, the warmth of the dream violently shattered.
An abrupt, deeply unnatural sensation flared right at the back of his throat. It felt as if a fistful of liquid ice had suddenly materialized inside his mouth.
The sudden, suffocating discomfort stabbed straight through the heavy haze of the potent blood-wine.
Thump.
His eyes snapped wide open. He blinked rapidly, staring up at the high, vaulted stone arches above his bed, his heart beginning to hammer against his ribs.
What is this...? Vilucious thought, a sudden spike of annoyance piercing his groggy mind. He swallowed hard, trying to clear the strange, metallic taste coating his tongue.
Did the wine turn? My throat feels... heavy. Constricted.
The discomfort escalated into a sharp, blinding panic within seconds. It felt as if thousands of microscopic, freezing needles were burrowing into his gums and wrapping tightly around the base of his tongue.
He could feel something physical, something alive, expanding exponentially inside his oral cavity.
Instinct overrode his royal dignity. He needed to call out. He needed to summon his guards to tear the room apart. He needed Kerwon to bring a healer.
Vilucious parted his lips, drawing in a sharp breath to unleash a commanding roar that would echo through the entire palace.
"Guards! In here, immediately..."
Absolutely no sound came out.
