The Sky Was Never Young: Vampire System Apocalypse
Chapter 44: You Are Nothing to Me: Insulting the Tyrant King
The invisible dome didn’t just shatter; it exploded in a brilliant display of sheer, unadulterated panic.
With a violent, convulsive heave, Cassius planted both palms against Fukuro’s chest and shoved the clerk away with enough force to bend a steel gate. He scrambled backward across the marble tiles like a scalded cat, his bare feet sliding through the purple sludge until his spine hit the stone pedestal of a shattered statue.
Instantly, Cassius clapped both hands over his own mouth, his eyes bulging to the size of tea saucers. The brilliant, deadly amethyst fire that usually defined his gaze was completely gone, replaced by a wide, frantic, blown-out horror.
"IDIOT------!" Cassius screamed through his fingers.
The syllable tore from his throat with the force of a sonic boom, amplified by the residual, chaotic magic humming in his chest. The word rippled outward across the plaza, bouncing off the high marble arches of the palace, echoing down the grand avenues, and reverberating through the entire upper tier of the Kingdom. It rattled windows three districts away.
Yet, in a display of true bureaucratic apathy, the kingdom simply ignored it. A merchant three feet away didn’t even look up as he aggressively bartered over the price of bruised figs. A patrol of royal guards down the street merely adjusted their helmets, entirely accustomed to random, loud explosions of magical hysteria.
Meanwhile, Fukuro remained flat on his back, utterly frozen.
The hyper-analytical, chillingly pragmatic clerk had completely ceased to function. His spectacles were completely lopsided, resting precariously on the tip of his nose. His eyes had shrunk into two tiny, microscopic black dots against a sea of blank white. A deep, violent crimson heat surged from his neck straight up to his ears, turning his entire face the exact shade of an overripe, bursting summer tomato.
Slowly, his right hand trembled upward, his index finger lightly touching his own lower lip. His brain, a neat ledger of numbers and inventory, was running a catastrophic system failure loop.
"I... I..." Fukuro whispered, his voice a tiny, mechanical squeak that barely left his throat. "I am not a virgin because of a boy?"
The profound horror of the realization settled into his bones. His first kiss- a milestone he had mathematically assumed would never happen due to his lack of interest and low salary-had just been stolen by a volatile, purple-tailed menace in a pile of crushed fruit.
"A boy..." Fukuro murmured to the sky, his eyes remaining those tiny, unblinking dots. His body was stiff as a wooden plank. "A bird... a banana bird... why me..."
Cassius snapped. The ancient, terrifying sorcerer’s pride had not just been bruised; it had been ground into a fine paste. He leaped to his feet, his green banana-stem tail whipping through the air so fast it made a whistling sound.
He stomped over to Fukuro, reached down, and grabbed the clerk by the stiff collar of his ruined, guava-smeared tunic.
With a roar of pure, comedic fury, Cassius lifted the rigid clerk entirely off the ground and began to swing him back and forth in the air like a frantic pendulum.
"Do you think this is a joke, you ink-wasting paper-pusher?!" Cassius shrieked, his voice cracking spectacularly as he shook Fukuro violently.
"My lips are sacred! They have spoken the ancient knowledge, the modern research theories that brought the world to its knees to bless my divine brain! They have tasted the unique taste coming from my roots! And now- now they have been contaminated by a common, entry-level civil servant and a cheap tropical fruit! I will scrub my face with sandpaper! I will swallow boiling lava to cleanse this indignity! Look at me when I am threatening your structural integrity!"
Fukuro didn’t look at him. He couldn’t. His head merely wobbled back and forth with the momentum of Cassius’s shaking, his limbs hanging limply like a broken ragdoll. The world around him was just a blurry smear of grey palace walls and a very angry, red-faced sorcerer.
"A bird..." Fukuro repeated, his voice entirely hollow, his senses completely detached from reality. "The vampires are bats. The sorcerer is a banana bird. The ledger is ruined. Form 4-B does not cover... unexpected physical contact..."
The thundering echoes of Cassius’s furious rant were cut short, not by a sudden burst of magic, but by the sheer, heavy presence of a voice that seemed to drop the temperature of the plaza by ten degrees.
The voice was deep, incredibly smooth, and vibrated with a terrifying, innate power that effortlessly commanded the entire courtyard. Yet, there was a shocking, casual arrogance to the tone- a slow, drawn-out amusement that felt entirely too relaxed for a ruined battlefield.
"I don’t allow gays in my kingdom..."the voice drawled, punctuated by a short, dramatic sigh of mock disappointment. "...huhh, filthy romantic stupids, haha."
The laugh was low and rich, echoing lightly off the cracked marble pillars.
The sudden interruption hit Cassius like a bucket of ice water. The absolute, comedic fury vanished from his face, replaced by a rigid, defensive stillness. His grip on Fukuro’s collar loosened just enough for the rigid, tomato-faced clerk to slide downward, his boots dragging against the stone tiles.
Fukuro’s tiny, dot-like pupils finally twitched, the mechanical fog in his brain clearing instantly as his hyper-analytical survival instincts booted back online. That voice belonged to someone with an immense, terrifying amount of authority.
Simultaneously, as if moved by the same mechanical string, both Cassius and Fukuro snapped their heads toward the source of the sound.
The crowd parted like the sea before a storm.
Emerging from the dust of the ruined square was a carriage of pure, unadulterated opulence- a heavy, low-slung royal transport carved from dark mahogany and lined with solid, polished gold filigree. It was pulled by two magnificent, snow-white stallions, their coats so pristine they seemed to catch the artificial sunlight and reflect it back into the eyes of the commoners. The horses moved with a synchronized, rhythmic power, their iron-shod hooves striking the cracked marble with heavy, authoritative thuds that felt less like transit and more like a march of conquest.
Sitting atop the velvet-cushioned throne of the vehicle was the ruthless but graceful lord of the Kingdom: Lord Vilucious.
He reclined with an entirely predatory elegance. One long leg was draped casually over the armrest, his fingers tapping a slow, lazy rhythm against the pommel of a gold-sheathed saber. His heavy, dark-furred mantle cascaded over his shoulders like a shadow, framing a face that was strikingly beautiful but entirely devoid of human mercy. His eyes, cold and sharp as winter ice, swept over the broken fruit baskets, the groaning vampire elites, and finally settled on the two disheveled figures in the center of the crater. The sheer weight of his presence was suffocating; a suffocating aura of absolute power radiated from him, forcing the nearby merchants to instinctively lower their heads and hold their breath.
Cassius’s entire body went rigid. The humiliation of the accidental kiss evaporated, instantly replaced by a deep, ancient hatred. He gripped his fists so tightly that his knuckles popped like small firecrackers, the sharp, black claws slicing into his palms. The amethyst fire in his heart flared back to life, leaking out from his eyes in dangerous, wispy trails of violet smoke. His long, green banana-stem tail went perfectly straight, vibrating with a tense, lethal energy.
Cassius opened his mouth, his fangs glistening in the sunlight. He hissed, the low, vibrating rumble of a sorcerer preparing to challenge a god, ready to spit a curse that would tear the royal carriage to splinters.
But before a single syllable could leave his lips, something entirely unexpected happened.
"Greetings to my graceful Lord! I am so blessed that I got your blessings right away!"
The voice was loud, mathematically precise, and perfectly pitched to travel across the courtyard with maximum clarity. It was a masterpiece of professional corporate submission, built entirely out of the finest administrative butter.
Cassius’s grand, dramatic monologue died in his throat. He blinked, the amethyst fire in his eyes flickering out in sheer, jarring confusion. He turned his head to curse the spineless bastard who had interrupted his moment of dark glory- and froze.
Fukuro was no longer standing.
The chill, unbothered clerk- the man who, mere moments ago, had been indifferently eating a guava while three vampire elites dove at him at the speed of sound- was now fully extended on the floor. He had thrown his entire body flat against the sticky, ruined stone tiles, his arms and legs spread out in a perfect, geometric posture of absolute, unashamed worship toward the royal vehicle. His pristine, guava-smeared tunic was face-down in the dirt, completely sacrificing his professional dignity to appease the ruler.
Cassius’s internal reaction was a localized psychological earthquake.
His eyes went entirely blank white. A thick cluster of blue, tensed anime-style stress lines popped up across his temple and forehead, throbbing violently with a volatile mix of utter shock and boiling rage. His mind ran a furious sequence of screaming questions:
This idiot?! The same absolute pragmatist who just acted like the King’s enemies were nothing but loud, expensive problems that needed to be swept away?! The one who casually insulted my legal rights?! Is now doing a full-body prostration for a bastard in a velvet chair?!
Yet, on the outside, Cassius desperately forced his mask to stay intact. He remained upright, his fists still clenched, his face a stiff, trembling picture of serious, dark-hearted anger- even as his brain cells were actively evaporating from the sheer absurdity of Fukuro’s sudden personality change.
Cassius let out a low, breathy chuckle. It wasn’t a comedic sound, but a cold, melodic rasp that carried distinct, mocking amusement. He slowly rolled his shoulders back, his green banana-stem tail settling into a calm, predatory curl behind him. He looked up at the towering royal carriage, entirely unfazed by the lord’s suffocating aura or the heavy, golden opulence meant to intimidate common men.
A sharp, elegant smirk cut across Cassius’s pale face.
"THEIR BASTARD LORD...There is not even any need to explain myself to you," Cassius said, his voice dropping into a smooth, resonant baritone that carried flawlessly across the silent courtyard. He tilted his chin up, looking at the ruler not as a subject looks at a king, but as a god looks at a passing cloud.
"You are nothing to me!"
