The Sky Was Never Young: Vampire System Apocalypse

Chapter 43: Clatter of a Knife: Lethal Charge or Accidental Kiss?

  • Next Chapter

The sudden quiet that followed the explosion was absolute, save for one highly specific sound: the wet, steady drip-drip-drip of purple slime sliding off the broken edge of a shattered oak table.

There, perched precariously atop the steaming, gelatinous heap of his own failed majesty, was Cassius.

He was crouched like a gargoyle, though significantly less dignified. His left foot was submerged up to the ankle in the viscous amethyst sludge, while his right leg was kicked out to the side to maintain balance. The oversized hemp trousers had bunched up to his knees, exposing two muscular, grime-streaked calves, and the frayed green banana-stem tail poked straight up into the air behind his lower spine.

His face was contorted into a mask of pure, unadulterated venom. He gritted his teeth, his long, predatory fangs completely exposed and glistening with a mix of saliva and dark blood. He didn’t look at the screaming vampire merchants, nor the generals tumbling through baskets of fruit. His eyes, burning with a lethal amethyst fire, locked directly onto the crowd.

Straight into the soul of Fukuro.

"You miserable, ink-stained excuse for a tailor," Cassius hissed. His voice was a low, vibrating growl that carried across the ruined square like a death sentence.

"I will strip the flesh from your bones for this indignity."

Fukuro, standing a few paces back near an overturned fruit stall, did not flinch. He didn’t even blink, but his spine grew a sudden current of fear.

In his right hand, the clerk held a large, slightly bruised guava. Moments before the crash, a wealthy vampire elite had tossed it to the ground at Fukuro’s feet, laughing at a Kingdom’s servant as if he were a stray hound in need of a scrap. But Fukuro was a man of absolute, chilling pragmatism. He didn’t care about the insults of filthy, overgrown bats who happened to wear silk doublets. To him, they weren’t human; they were just loud, expensive problems that occasionally required sweeping up. And a free fruit was a free fruit.

Slowly, deliberately, Fukuro lifted the guava to his mouth. He took a clean, loud, incredibly crisp bite.

Crunch.

His expression was completely blank as he didn’t know what Cassius was about to do with him, or what danger he was taking on himself.

The three vampire elites did not stay down.

With a chorus of hissed curses, they tore themselves from the ruined baskets. Their expensive silk liveries ripped apart as the skin on their backs split with a sickening, wet tear. Massive, leathery black wings burst outward, snapping open with a violent thwack that kicked up a gale of dust and crushed fruit.

"Blasphemous wretch!" the first elite roared, his eyes flashing a rabid, glowing bluish light.

He launched himself into the sky, his speed breaking the sound barrier with a sharp boom. He dove at Cassius like a falling meteor, his razor-sharp talons extended, cutting white wind-lines through the air as he aimed directly for the sorcerer’s throat.

Cassius didn’t even blink. His initial embarrassment had fully calcified into a towering, magnificent rage. The deep, amethyst core within his chest throbbed, sending a blinding shockwave of purple energy rippling across the open courtyard of Kingdom tiles.

"You think a few feathers make you gods?" Cassius sneered.

With a fluid, microsecond tilt of his upper body, Cassius let the first vampire streak past his ear. The absolute speed of the move left an afterimage. Before the creature could even register the miss, the second and third elites executed a synchronized pincer attack from the left and right, moving so fast they vanished from normal sight, leaving only twin streaks of red light in their wake.

They converged on him, fangs bared, a fraction of an inch from tearing him to pieces. Time seemed to slow to an absolute crawl.

"Pathetic," Cassius whispered.

He dropped his weight instantly. The two flying monsters collided in mid-air with a loud, bony CRACK of their skulls. As they reeled in a daze, Cassius threw both hands outward, his fingers curved like claws. The viscous, dark purple fluid beneath his feet violently exploded upward, responding to his absolute fury. It rose in three massive, undulating serpentine dragons of jelly, crackling with unstable, pitch-black lightning.

With a savage flick of his wrists, Cassius commanded the magic. The amethyst tendrils whipped forward like unleashed whips, wrapping around the ankles of all three flying elites simultaneously.

"Back to the dirt, where you belong!" Cassius roared.

He slammed his hands downward, his aura flaring into a massive pillar of purple light. The heavy fluid yanked the three elites out of the sky with terrifying, gravitational force, slamming them face-first into the stone tiles one after the other. SMASH. CRASH. THUD.

A massive crater spread across the marble. They lay there in a broken, groaning heap of torn silk and crumpled wings, utterly defeated in a single, cinematic stroke.

Fukuro stood completely numb. The half-eaten guava hung limply in his hand. For the first time, the chill, unbothered clerk was in absolute awe. His mind couldn’t process the sheer speed, the raw violence, and the terrifying aura of the dangerous weapon standing before him. He was frozen in a state of total, silent shock.

Cassius, breathing heavily as the purple aura slowly faded from his skin, looked over the battlefield. His eyes locked onto a fancy, silver-handled meat-cutting knife lying on the ground- a lavish utensil left behind from the elites’ breakfast.

"Now," Cassius growled, his fangs still exposed as he snatched the blade off the stone, the metal gleaming dangerously in the sunlight. "For the tailor."

He bolted straight toward Fukuro, his bare feet slapping the stone with predatory speed, the knife raised to finish the clerk. Fukuro could only watch, paralyzed as death sprinted toward him in high-definition terror.

The human clerk’s hyper-analytical mind, usually so quick to calculate numbers and log inventory, completely stalled under the sheer weight of the threat. In his vision, the entire chaotic courtyard bled into a blurry, insignificant smear, leaving only the advancing sorcerer in razor-sharp focus. Fukuro could see every terrifying detail with agonizing clarity: the jagged, dark purple veins pulsing wildly beneath Cassius’s pale skin, and the terrifying abyss of his eyes. The whites had been completely swallowed by a creeping, pitch-black void, emitting faint, wispy tendrils of shadow that bled into the air behind him like smoke. The tiny, wet glint of sunlight catching the serrated edge of the silver blade flashed dangerously.

Every instinct told Fukuro to dive, to run, to scream- but his muscles refused the command, locked in a state of absolute, numb shock as the shadow-eyed weapon closed the distance in a fraction of a heartbeat.

But the universe had other plans.

One of the knocked-out elites, bleeding and desperate in the crater, clawed at the stone behind Cassius. Wanting a petty revenge, the vampire grabbed a stray banana from a crushed basket and hurled it blindly through the air with the last of his strength.

The yellow fruit sailed high in a perfect arc, spinning lazily under the artificial sun, before dropping right onto the polished stone- precisely where Cassius was about to plant his bare foot.

Cassius’s heel came down squarely on the banana skin.

The legendary sorcerer’s leg shot forward into a violent, frictionless slide. The grand, lethal momentum evaporated instantly. With a frantic gasp, Cassius’s arms windmilled wildly through the air, the fancy meat knife flying out of his hand and clattering away. He skidded across the smooth marble like a runaway sled, hurtling directly into Fukuro’s personal space.

Fukuro, still numb from shock, couldn’t even react to dodge.

Cassius collided with him chest-to-chest. The impact knocked the wind out of them both, sending them tumbling forward onto the ground in a tangle of limbs and scratchy hemp cloth. As they hit the floor, their faces slammed together with pinpoint, catastrophic accuracy.

The plaza fell completely silent, save for the soft, distinct sound of their lips pressing firmly against one another.

For three agonizing seconds, the ancient, terrifying sorcerer and the unbothered, ink-stained clerk lay perfectly still on the palace floor, locked in a flawless, accidental kiss.

The roaring wind of the battle, the crackle of purple lightning, and the screams of the feasting vampires did not matter anymore. Around them, the plaza returned to its frantic, self-absorbed rhythm. The tunnel-visioned elites scrambled to brush the dirt from their silk liveries, and the vendors continued to bark prices over the din. No one looked back at the crater.

But for Cassius and Fukuro, the entire world vanished.

A heavy, suffocating dome of absolute silence slammed down over the two of them. The ambient noise of the daytime feast became nothing more than a distant, muted hum, entirely locked out of their consciousness. Neither of them moved. Fukuro’s eyes were still wide behind his thick spectacles, staring blankly into Cassius’s stunned, amethyst irises. Cassius’s hands were frozen mid-air, his fingers hooked like useless claws, his mind completely short-circuiting.

In their shared vacuum of pure, unadulterated shock, the only thing that existed was the soft, distinct pressure of their lips pressed firmly together.

Then, cutting straight through the breathless stillness of their private void, came a sharp, rhythmic sound from a few paces away.

Clink.

The silver-handled meat-cutting knife, which had been thrown high into the air during Cassius’s ungraceful slide, finally returned to earth. It struck the polished marble floor blade-first.

Clatter-clatter-clatter-clink.

The fancy utensil bounced twice, spun lazily on its side, and slid across the smooth stone with a long, metallic hiss before coming to a complete rest. The ring of the steel echoed with agonizing clarity inside the silence of their minds- a tiny, mocking punctuation mark at the absolute end of a legendary disaster.
