Chapter 195: Stonewake Basin
It would offer a world that could move for whoever woke it.
The Stonewake Basin.
It came into view past the quarry hills, a circle of dark earth enclosed by mountain cliffs. The ground inside rippled, as if something alive were moving beneath it. Every so often, a rumble rose from underneath, the sound of stone grinding against stone somewhere far below.
Many of the quarry refugees had arrived before Austin Veyron, taking the same evacuation path Oris and Daria’s hunters had used. The workers sat in clusters along the rim and watched the basin with suspicion.
No one wanted to be anywhere near the middle.
The ground there was starting to rise.
A black-white line led across the basin to a source seat, half-buried in the earth at its center. The sovereign echo stood beside it, its body held together by pieces of root and stolen claims.
"See," it said. "No bodies. No lights. No contracts. Only earth. All it needs is a hand to claim it."
The basin rippled again.
Stone figures emerged from the dirt around the source seat. They were bigger than the ones in the quarry, with human torsos of black stone and arms long enough to touch the cliff edges. A red-white line ran across each of their bodies, glowing like a route path.
They walked slowly, as if waking from a long sleep. Somehow that was more frightening than if they had charged.
THE LAND SERVES THE ONE WHO WAKES IT.
Austin Veyron could feel the source beneath him.
It was huge, more powerful than the quarry heart or the Marrow Vault. All of the frontier’s power seemed to gather in the Stonewake Basin. DEVOUR craved it so badly that his jaw clenched.
He could control the earth itself.
He could make it attack anything he wanted. He could have it guard cities by raising walls around them. No one would ever reach Grand Meridian again. Nothing would rise from the dirt without his command.
The idea felt peaceful, but Austin Veyron knew that feeling from the Ashen Stair and the Marrow Vault. Each time, it had been his hunger talking, just in a quieter voice. If a wall answered only to him, then he controlled who could pass through it.
Veyra stepped in front of him, blocking his view of the source seat.
"Name it."
"I want the basin."
"And what would it make?"
"It would let me own the ground under everyone’s feet."
"Then it would make every path a cage," Sable said. The shard of her broken crown glowed white against the dirt.
Austin Veyron understood what she meant. When Sable had worn her crown, she had owned the ground beneath her people. She had seen what it did to her, and she said it as a simple fact.
Oris stood with the quarry workers at the cliff edge.
"We have three crews trapped in the bottom cut," he said. "The basin shifted and closed in around them."
Daria pointed toward the west cliff. "My hunters can set up a rope line to help them get out."
Tessa was studying the copy of the Deep Table map. "This map shows a seam in the pressure. We could send the basin’s surge into an empty valley and release the pressure on the bottom cut."
"Would one person be able to control it?" Ceryn asked.
"No," Tessa said. "The seam has three release points, and they all have to be counted at the same time."
The stone figures began their attack.
One lunged at the quarry workers on the cliff edge. Rin shot an arrow at the route line on its body, but the line slid to another spot on the stone. Orena stuck her spear into a crack in the figure’s ankle and used the leverage to knock it over. The figure crashed to the ground and shattered, but the pieces immediately began putting themselves back together.
Veyra stopped another stone figure from reaching the rope line. She cut off one of its arms and felt the impact run straight into her wounded shoulder. The arm hit the ground and started forming into a smaller stone figure.
Nyra raised the heart shard and created a boundary around the workers’ escape path. Blue-black light surrounded them and kept the stone figures from reaching them.
Austin Veyron looked at the claim on the stone figure’s body.
THE LAND SERVES THE ONE WHO WAKES IT.
The sovereign echo wanted the land to serve it.
"Target," Austin Veyron said. "The land-serves-the-one-who-wakes-it clause. Not the earth. Not the workers. Not the basin’s pressure."
"Witnessed," Veyra said.
"Witnessed," Sable added.
Austin Veyron pressed the white root chain into the ground.
DEVOUR opened. The clause tasted like a continent bending beneath a single boot.
THE LAND SERVES THE ONE WHO WAKES IT.
He consumed serves.
The stone figures stopped moving.
Their route lines dimmed, and the shattered pieces no longer came back together. The basin was still rippling with power, but the earth no longer moved to serve the sovereign echo.
"Now we can help the workers," Tessa said.
Three teams went to the release points.
Oris led a group of quarry workers to the south release point. Daria’s hunters followed the route toward the valley to release the basin’s pressure there. Ceryn and Calder took the north pressure wheel with two quarry workers who knew how to work the machine. All three release points had to reach the same count before the pressure could be released. The north wheel was rusted stiff, and the workers had to throw their whole weight against it.
"South release is at forty," Oris called.
"We’re at thirty-eight on the west," Daria answered.
"Forty-one on the north," Ceryn said.
"Don’t release until we’re within two of each other," Tessa said.
Her voice stayed level as she tracked the numbers on her paper, as if she weren’t standing in the Stonewake Basin at all, but sitting at a table in Grand Meridian.
The sovereign echo laughed.
"You take your time counting," it said. "I will take my time waking."
It stepped onto the source seat.
The Stonewake Basin began to rise.
The middle of the basin lifted from the ground and became a huge body of earth and stone. The cliffs became its shoulders, and arms of rock formed at its sides. Dirt poured from its joints like flowing water. The sovereign echo’s black-and-white face appeared at the top of it, so large it took up most of the horizon.
The quarry workers in the bottom cut began to panic as the ground tilted beneath them.
Austin Veyron felt his hunger reach for the giant body. It was big enough to end the battle, enough to consume everything at once. He could devour it before it destroyed anyone else.
"Smaller," Veyra said through the rising cloud of dirt.
Austin Veyron looked past the giant and saw the line running into the source seat. The sovereign echo hadn’t truly claimed the land. It had claimed the idea that a body large enough didn’t need to take anyone else into account.
THE GREATEST BODY MAKES THE PATH.
"Target," Austin Veyron said. "The greatest-body path claim. Not the basin. Not the workers. Not the source seat."
"Witnessed," Veyra said.
"Witnessed," Sable replied.
Austin Veyron ran across the shifting ground toward the source seat.
The giant’s arm swung at him. Orena stabbed her spear into a seam in the rock, giving Austin Veyron something to grab as the ground lurched beneath him. Rin shot arrows at the loose stones around the sovereign echo’s face, making it turn to look at her. Nyra held a boundary around the workers in the bottom cut so they could keep escaping.
Austin Veyron slipped on loose gravel, and for a moment he felt himself falling. He caught himself, pulled himself back up, and made it to the source seat.
DEVOUR opened. The claim showed him all the people who lived beneath mountains and every route they traveled. It insisted that the greatest body should make the path, because everyone depended on it. The claim tasted like an avalanche that called itself a road.
THE GREATEST BODY MAKES THE PATH.
He consumed greatest.
The giant body began to crack.
Cliffs fell from its shoulders, and the earth that made up its arm collapsed into the valley. At the south, west, and north release points, the teams turned their controls together.
"South release is at forty!" Oris called.
"Forty on the west!" Daria answered.
"Forty on the north!" Ceryn said.
"Release!" Tessa shouted.
The basin’s pressure surged into the empty valley. The bottom cut stopped tilting, and the workers trapped there climbed up to the rope lines Daria’s hunters had set.
The sovereign echo shrank back to its original size and form.
For the first time, it looked scared.
Its stone face began to crack, and the roots holding it together began to fade.
The source seat opened beneath it, and a trunk path appeared, leading deeper into the earth. Every Deep Table map copy began to glow.
THE FIRST TABLE.
The sovereign echo seized the trunk path before anyone could close the source seat.
"You keep refusing the bodies I offer," it said. "So I will show you where every source learned to offer them."
Its black-and-white light poured down the path, and it disappeared.
The Stonewake Basin calmed, and for the first time since they had arrived, the ground stopped moving.
The source seat stayed open, the trunk path running down into the depths of the earth.
"The echo has fragments from five source seats now," Nyra said, studying the heart shard.
"The First Table is the central source," Tessa said, laying the maps out on the ground. "Every branch we’ve been following leads there."
Austin Veyron watched the quarry workers climb out of the bottom cut and onto solid ground. Oris was counting the survivors, checking his list one more time to be sure.
The earth hadn’t become his weapon.
But the sovereign echo was heading for the place where every body had first been offered.
