The Scumbags Guide to Enslaving Demon's
Chapter 194: Waking Quarry
It wanted an army that wouldn’t question it.
The Waking Quarry lay southeast of Lanternfall, dug into a range of dark hills.
Stone lifts ran along the sides of the quarry, swaying and dangling in the wind. Camps with cloth roofs sat beneath the lifts, each one marked with a contractor’s symbol. A fine dust from the stonework hung over the whole quarry, covering everything from the tents to the carts to the workers themselves, until the entire place looked as though it had been carved out of the same rock. At the bottom of the pit lay a slab of black stone, glowing a faint red-white.
The sovereign echo’s path had reached the stone before they arrived.
A foreman greeted them at the top gate. He was a grown man with dust covering his face and a brass contract tag pinned to his work shirt.
"I’m Oris," he said. "The crews at the bottom haven’t answered the call bell, and our quarry equipment is operating by itself."
"Do you want us to take over the pit?" Austin Veyron asked.
Oris turned to look at the workers gathered behind him. "No. I want you to help get our crews out of the bottom and let us open our contract books. We have people trapped down there."
"Then show us the real routes," Tessa said.
Oris led them to a board near the lift where the quarry’s safety protocols were posted. It listed shift times, water rations, and stone weights, along with every exit out of the quarry. But beneath all of the work schedules, someone had added red writing.
LABOR BELONGS TO THE STONE THAT NEEDS IT.
"The echo is using the contracts as a source claim," Ceryn said.
Nyra held her heart shard against the quarry rail. "Its body anchor is in the heart of the pit. It’s using the labor line to awaken the stone."
Austin Veyron stared down into the pit.
Living stone would give him power. It was denser than the rock around it, and if he devoured it, he could take in enough mass to overpower any echo body the moment it formed.
The idea appealed to him. He would never be moved again. Not by a sword, not by someone claiming his body. He would never collapse. He would be the foundation for everything around him.
Then he imagined the slab inside his chest, and he knew that a foundation never got to decide what stood on top of it.
Veyra stepped forward.
"Name it."
"I want to devour the quarry heart."
"And what would it make?"
"Stone within myself."
Sable’s crown shard cut through the dust. "And a source that will never be anything other than your power."
The quarry bell rang.
Stone constructs rose from the bottom of the pit.
They were shaped like miners carved from rock, with pickaxes growing from their arms and a red strip of contract words running across each of their chests. Every step they took shook the ground as they climbed toward the top of the pit, where the workers were trapped.
WORK UNTIL THE QUARRY IS FULL.
Daria’s hunters took their positions along the quarry rim. They didn’t take charge of the work crews. They only called out which escape paths were open.
"West path is clear!" one of them shouted.
"Lift chain is blocked!" another called.
Oris instructed his workers beside the safety board. "Two people per rope line. Don’t turn around to grab any of your equipment. Once you reach the top gate, count every person who made it out."
The workers started moving out of the quarry.
The stone constructs lunged at them.
Rin’s arrows pierced the red strip on the first construct’s chest, but the words began to re-form almost at once. Orena hit the second construct with her spear, bracing against the rail to push it back from the workers. Veyra sliced off one construct’s arm before it could hit the lift cable, and she grimaced at the pain in her injured shoulder.
Austin Veyron saw the phrase that owned the constructs.
LABOR BELONGS TO THE STONE THAT NEEDS IT.
The quarry wasn’t only saying the workers had to work. It was saying the stone could own the workers because it needed them. If the stone needed something, it could own it, and never have to ask.
"Target," Austin Veyron said. "The labor-belongs-to-the-stone clause. Not the workers. Not the quarry heart. Not the constructs’ stone."
"Witnessed," Veyra said.
"Witnessed," Sable said.
Austin Veyron drove the white root chain into the contract strip on the nearest construct’s chest.
DEVOUR opened. The clause tasted like a time clock fused to someone’s ribs.
LABOR BELONGS TO THE STONE THAT NEEDS IT.
He consumed belongs.
The construct stopped in its tracks.
Its pickaxe arm lowered, and the red strip on its chest faded. Across the bottom of the pit, the other constructs stopped too. Their claim lines disappeared, and they stood still, no longer trying to attack the workers.
Oris watched his workers escape up the west path.
"The stone is still awake," he said.
"But it doesn’t own any of the workers," Tessa said. "Now tell us what the workers at the bottom need."
Oris read the board to them. "There are six of them trapped in the east cut. The quarry heart broke our escape tunnel."
Nyra’s heart shard glowed toward the bottom of the pit. "The echo is down there."
They took the west path down while the workers above continued their escape. The bottom of the pit was warm, and the air was heavy with moisture. Red-white lines ran through the walls, pulsing with a steady beat.
Six workers stood trapped in the east cut, closed in by stone. Oris called out to them, and each of them answered.
"Our escape tunnel is broken!" one worker shouted. "Every time we try to break through, the stone moves!"
Orena placed her hand on the wall of stone. "If we try to break through, it’ll cave in."
Ceryn pointed at a diagram on the wall. "There’s a vent in the wall. If we can open it, the stone will shift to the side."
"Does anyone know how to open that vent?" Austin Veyron asked.
"I do," the worker behind the wall answered. "I can show you, but you’ll need to get a line through to me."
Rin shot an arrow with a rope tied to it through a gap in the wall, and the worker grabbed the rope on the other side. Together, the two groups worked to open the vent from both sides of the wall. No one went in alone, and no one acted as if the trapped workers were just cargo to be carried out. The workers guided the others through each step of opening the vent, and everyone was soon sweating through their clothes.
The wall of stone shifted to the side.
The six workers climbed out, dust coating their faces. Oris counted them one more time to make sure they had all made it.
The quarry heart chamber lay ahead of them.
The slab of black stone had cracked, and red-white light was pouring from the crack. The sovereign echo stood in the chamber, its body made of dark stone plates with joints of black root. It was taller than before, broader than a doorway, and its face was now made of stone, like a mask.
"You freed the workers," it said. "But once you leave, there will be no one strong enough to supply what the frontier needs."
Austin Veyron stared at the echo’s body. It had been made from the stone surrounding the quarry, and on some of the plates he could still see the marks where workers had cut the rock from the walls. It had consumed other people’s work to make itself stronger.
"When we leave, there will be workers who can choose what they work on," he said.
The echo placed its hand on the quarry heart.
Stone moved beneath its feet.
A new Deep Table path opened, leading to a bowl-shaped stretch of rock carved with rings of circles.
THE STONEWAKE BASIN.
The echo hadn’t finished creating its full body, but it was strong enough to fight them.
It punched the wall, and rocks fell all around them. Veyra pushed Oris and the workers into the escape tunnel. Sable stabbed her crown shard into the red lines running through the stone. Nyra spread her blue-black boundary around the quarry heart so it couldn’t claim the people who had worked it.
Austin Veyron looked at the body-anchor phrase on the echo’s chest.
THE EARTH FORMS THE HAND THAT COMMANDS IT.
"Target," he said. "The earth-forms-the-hand-that-commands-it clause. Not the quarry. Not the workers. Not the echo’s raw stone body."
"Witnessed," Veyra said.
"Witnessed," Sable said.
Austin Veyron drove his root chain into the echo’s body.
DEVOUR opened. The claim tasted like a mountain squeezing every small thing around it.
THE EARTH FORMS THE HAND THAT COMMANDS IT.
He consumed commands.
The echo’s body cracked.
Red-white light leaked out of it, but it didn’t collapse. The echo let go of the quarry heart, and the black stone stopped claiming the workers’ contract tags.
It stepped back onto the new path it had created to the Stonewake Basin.
"The Stonewake will not need their permission," it said.
Then the echo disappeared into the path.
The quarry heart cracked once more.
The chamber began to cave in around them, dust falling from the ceiling.
Oris led his workers to the escape tunnel, making sure every one of them made it out. The quarry was destroyed, but no claim lines held its workers anymore.
Austin Veyron stared at the path to the Stonewake on the map.
The echo had found a source of living earth.
Next time, it wouldn’t need a body made from the dead.
