The other side of Reincarnation
Part one hundred sixty — What Everyone Gained
Kai explained everything to her properly once she'd steadied—who he was, what this world actually was, and the truth about her own reincarnation.
She believed him readily, the surname Kobayashi itself carrying a strange, immediate weight she couldn't fully explain. Some deep instinct seemed to recognize kinship in it, even without understanding why.
He introduced her to the rest of the household over the following days—Eris, Elaine, Enzo, Nero, Seli—each of them absorbing the news of Horizoncrest's newest addition with their own particular flavor of bemused acceptance by now.
"Another one," Elaine said mildly.
"I've genuinely stopped being surprised," Enzo added.
Ivy, for her part, received exactly what she'd hoped for.
Kai, true to his word, granted her the evolution she'd quietly been working toward, elevating her from a demon merely participating in Demon Lord ascension into a fully awakened Demon Lord in her own right.
"Thank you, Lord Kai," she said, formal despite her obvious satisfaction.
"You earned it," Kai told her. "Restraining Chloe alone, and bringing her back safely—that's the kind of thing this family actually deserves to be rewarded for."
Eris, watching Chloe settle in close to Kai's side over the following days—closer, considerably, than simple gratitude usually required—felt something small and uncomfortable stir in her own chest that she didn't fully examine yet.
She's clinging to him. I know why, logically—the naming, the redirected hunger, whatever bond that actually created between them. Doesn't make it feel any less strange to watch.
She said nothing about it, though, choosing instead to simply observe, patient, the same way she'd learned to be patient about most things over the years since Kai had first found her half-dead in a clearing.
One more piece of this family, growing in a direction none of us fully expected. Guess that's just how things work around here by now.
The pattern, Kai noticed, held true again.
Every name he gave made the recipient stronger, and every recipient's growth fed back into his own—a genuine cycle of mutual strengthening that showed no sign of slowing, regardless of how many people he'd already named.
The more I give, the more I gain. That's not something I planned. It's just how Null seems to actually work.
"An accurate observation," Null-Subconsciousness confirmed, unprompted. "The mechanism benefits both parties equally, in proportion to what's granted."
Chloe, still adjusting to a lucidity she hadn't experienced in a decade and a half, watched the whole household with wide, quietly amazed eyes.
These were people who'd built something genuinely warm out of loss and strangeness—exactly the way she was slowly beginning to understand her own new place among them might actually look, given time.
Fifteen years of dying and coming back with nothing left of myself each time, she thought, watching Kai work through some minor dispute between Nero and Seli with patient, easy authority.
And now, finally, something that actually feels like it might be worth staying alive for properly.
She stayed close to him for the rest of that evening, quiet and content in a way that felt, to her, like the first genuinely peaceful hour she'd known in longer than she could clearly remember.
Kai spent four months inside the underground facility, largely uninterrupted, working through the complex, layered process of purifying and stabilizing Genesis energy at a scale nobody had ever attempted before.
Every failed batch teaches me something. Every stabilization that collapses tells me exactly which variable I got wrong. This is just numbers and patience, same as running an old-world trading account. I can do this.
Chloe stayed with him the entire time, quietly managing meals and settling into a domestic rhythm that suited her considerably better than the fifteen years of mindless violence that had come before it.
Ace remained too, alternating between offering genuinely useful observations about the facility's ambient mana flow and lodging complaints about the quality of underground cooking compared to Horizoncrest's surface kitchens.
You could help more and complain less, Kai told him, more than once.
I am helping, Ace replied, entirely unbothered. Morale requires honest feedback. I am providing honest feedback.
Elaine had built a proper living space into the facility itself early on—nothing elaborate, just somewhere to actually sleep and bathe without leaving the project unattended for long stretches.
Chloe took to cooking there with quiet, devoted attention, always making certain Kai actually ate rather than simply working through mealtimes entirely.
Outside, the rest of the household kept Horizoncrest's growing web of obligations properly running.
Eris and Enzo remained in Myrath, keeping the kingdom's more ambitious nobles from testing young Sieg's authority too aggressively.
Ashford and Horizoncrest settled into a genuine, steady trade rhythm.
Tearmoon's own scholars arrived in small groups, eager to study the agricultural techniques that had already transformed several kingdoms' understanding of what was possible with the right knowledge properly shared.
Ivy briefed Kai personally on the full shape of the Tearmoon alliance once she'd returned, and he'd absorbed it with the same distracted, half-present attention he gave most things that didn't directly touch the project consuming his days.
Nero, Ivy, and Elaine, alongside Vance, handled Horizoncrest's day-to-day governance together—a rotation that had settled into something surprisingly stable, given how strange the household's own composition remained.
Far away, in the Kingdom of Teorema, an entirely different kind of meeting was unfolding.
「Demon Lords do not have the right to rule over this world,」 Valt Horax declared, for what was clearly not the first time that particular council had heard the sentiment. 「I will personally end this newly risen threat myself.」
His confidence carried the particular weight of a man who genuinely believed his ultimate attack, Judgment, made him functionally unbeatable.
And, to be fair, it had never once failed him before.
「You've heard what he did to Ashford,」 he continued. 「To Myrath entirely. If we don't act, he'll come for us next.」
He wasn't fully in his right mind, saying it. Something underneath his own certainty had gone quietly, invisibly wrong.
His son—Jiro, once known as Kenji, reincarnated into this world without any memory of the man he'd been before—sat nearby, helping his younger sister braid her hair, smiling privately to himself the entire time.
Domination.
Greed.
Both working exactly as intended.
He already hated demon lords before I ever touched him. I just gave that hatred somewhere useful to go.
Through his father, through the same unresisted influence, Jiro's own Unique Skill had spread quietly to the king, to the nobles, to nearly everyone whose decisions actually mattered in Teorema's court.
A ruler pulling strings from the shadows. I like the sound of that considerably more than I ever liked being Kenji.
Teorema sat close enough to Horizoncrest's own borders that whatever happened next was never going to stay a distant problem for long.
Meanwhile, considerably farther away, the Holy Church of Aethelis convened a joint council between its Frost and Dawn branches, both empires' clergy gathered to discuss the same growing threat.
「According to our network,」 one reader announced, working through a lengthy report, 「this new demon lord commands a group calling themselves the Kobayashi family. He's founded a nation on the exact site where the Chaos Dragon once sealed the primordial demon known as No.8—and rumor suggests he's the one who broke that seal personally. He has an Elder Dragon serving him. The Calamity Wolf, believed extinct until now. A newly evolved demon lord. A human and a high elf whose true identities remain unconfirmed.」
「And you're certain he has an actual demon lord as a subordinate?」 one of the higher priests pressed, disbelieving.
「Certain,」 the reader confirmed. 「Formerly sin-emarked. Given the name Ivy. Evolved to demon lord status through his own naming ability.」
The room erupted immediately—demand after demand that something be done, that this threat be disposed of before it grew any further.
A new messenger entered mid-uproar, another report in hand.
「The primordial demon known as No.8 has been named――」
His head separated from his shoulders before he finished the sentence.
Silence—absolute—swallowed the room.
A second person reached for the fallen scroll, began reading the name aloud—
And lost his own head the same instant.
「Our god,」 the communication liaison finally managed, shaken, 「has just informed me that name cannot be spoken by anyone below its own level of power.」
The chamber dissolved into confusion, priests and holy knights alike scrambling into defensive formation against a threat none of them could properly locate.
Far away, in a throne room considerably beyond mortal reach, Nao Shimizu raised her head from wherever her attention had been resting and smiled.
「Kai Kobayashi,」 she said, quiet, almost fond.
Vorath and Skorne stood at her sides.
「Now that he's allied with Nyxara, and Nero,」 Skorne said, 「and gained an Elder Dragon and a vampire besides—how do we proceed?」
「For now,」 Nao said, 「we sit. And enjoy the show.」
「If you say so,」 Vorath said, and left it at that.
