The other side of Reincarnation

Part one hundred sixty-four — Coming Up for Air

  • Next Chapter

Kai finished his last meal in the underground facility and, for the first time in months, actually stepped back outside into open sunlight.

Right. That exists.

I remember that.

Horizoncrest welcomed him back like a man returning from a long journey rather than someone who'd simply been underground the whole time.

People waved. Others called out greetings.

The town itself was considerably more developed than he remembered leaving it.

New rows of housing stretched into land that had, until recently, still been sealed behind the dimensional barrier. Proper roads had been built, and there was even a market square he genuinely didn't recognize.

They kept building this whole time.

Without me having to hold their hands through any of it.

The elf elder and his wife greeted him warmly, clearly relieved to see him properly again.

Their daughter, now handling a significant share of Horizoncrest's trade negotiations herself, gave him a brief, proud update before returning to her own work.

Good.

This is exactly what I wanted.

Building something that doesn't collapse the second I stop personally holding it up.

With Nero still off collecting materials, and everyone else scattered across their own responsibilities, Kai found himself, possibly for the first time in years, genuinely and completely bored.

Himari's busy.

Chloe's busy.

Everyone's busy.

I've got nothing to actually do but wait.

He returned to the facility with no real plan beyond restlessness and told Null-Subconsciousness, almost idly, that he wanted to create something capable of projecting memories directly.

A way to actually revisit his own past life properly, rather than relying on whatever fragments surfaced unpredictably.

"Understood," it said, and walked him through the process.

The result, once finished, was a crystal linked directly to his own mind.

Testing it properly, Kai watched fragments of his old life play out in front of him like a television screen.

 Chemistry and physics lessons.

 Business administration lectures.

Hours spent hunched over trading account analysis.

Uh...

What happens if I flip this formula upside down?

That single, idle thought turned into something he genuinely hadn't planned for.

He spent the following days — genuinely losing proper count, given his species no longer required sleep at all — pulling apart every piece of old-world chemistry and engineering knowledge he still carried.

He mapped it against the magical materials this world actually had available, testing combinations that had no business working and somehow, repeatedly, did.

Dragonsteel.

Voidstone.

Astral Crystal.

If I can properly formalize the production process for each of these, Horizoncrest doesn't just have to rely on natural resources anymore.

We can actually manufacture what we need.

He worked through material after material.

Refining Dragonfire Furnace techniques for Dragonsteel.

Developing Void Compression Formations for stabilizing Voidstone safely.

Growing Astral Crystals inside proper refinement chambers rather than hunting for naturally occurring deposits.

And potions.

Alchemy's basically just chemistry with better ingredients.

By the time he actually stopped, the facility Elaine had built for him looked like a disaster zone.

 Scorch marks covered the walls.

Shattered containment vessels littered the floor.

Spellwork residue coated nearly every surface.

Kai stepped outside, covered in smoke, his hair singed at the edges.

 He found Ivy first.

"Gather everyone available," he said. "I've got some things to show you."

She studied him for a long moment, taking in his general state of disarray.

 "Are you alright, Lord Kai?"

"Never better," he said, grinning despite the smoke.

"Genuinely, I think I just accidentally revolutionized this entire kingdom's production capacity out of pure boredom."
