The Mind-Reading Mate: Why Is the Lycan King So Obsessed With Me?
Chapter 593: How to Threaten a Goddess (1)
"I don’t know," Edmund replied quickly. "That’s why, explain it to me."
Leofric stopped pacing and stared at Edmund for a moment. The annoyed expression on his face slowly disappeared, and he let out a long sigh.
"Fine. You want an explanation? I’ll give you one," Leofric said. "But first, you need to understand something. I was never supposed to interfere with your lives."
"I was supposed to watch you. That was all," Leofric continued. "I made that deal because I was bored and thought watching a man willingly suffer through a hundred lives for the woman he loved would be interesting. I wasn’t supposed to save you, help you, warn you, or change anything that was meant to happen."
Primrose’s expression changed slightly. "Then why did you?"
Leofric looked at Edmund and sighed. "Because watching someone suffer is much easier when you’ve only watched him once or twice, but after dozens of lives, it stopped being entertaining."
Edmund remained silent as he listened to Leofric.
"I watched you lose everything again and again. Sometimes you found Primrose, sometimes you barely had the chance to know her, and sometimes your life was already miserable long before the two of you met." Leofric shook his head. "By the time we reached this life, I had already watched you suffer a hundred times. Even someone like me can eventually feel sorry for a fool."
"So that’s why you saved me from slavery," Edmund said.
"Yes," Leofric admitted without hesitation and clicked his tongue. "I wasn’t supposed to do that."
"And I definitely wasn’t supposed to let you learn magic from me," Leofric added. "That was another rule I broke."
Primrose stared at him in surprise. Until now, she had known that Leofric had helped Edmund in the past, but she had never realized that simply helping him had gone against the rules Leofric was supposed to follow.
"Then what about our previous life?" Edmund asked. "You interfered back then too, didn’t you?"
Leofric became quiet for a moment. "I did more than interfere."
Edmund and Primrose both stared at him.
Leofric rubbed his forehead before continuing, "I went to the Moon Goddess and made a bargain with her."
Primrose immediately straightened. "You did what?"
"I told her to stop pretending she was innocent," Leofric replied. "Your punishment might have come from Heaven, but she wasn’t completely free from blame. She knew what was happening to the two of you, and she still chose to do nothing."
"So I gave her a choice," Leofric continued. "She could do something about your situation, or I would."
Edmund stared at him in confusion. "What exactly did you threaten to do?"
Leofric smiled slightly. "I told her I would slowly erase the need for her existence."
The room became completely quiet until Lorelle spoke up, "You threatened a Goddess with that?"
"I wasn’t going to kill all her followers or destroy every temple she had," Leofric explained. "That would have been far too much work. I simply planned to start small."
Primrose suddenly had a bad feeling about what he meant by that.
Leofric continued calmly, "The Moon Goddess has power because werewolves and lycans worship her and believe they need her guidance, especially when it comes to finding their mates. So I thought, what would happen if they slowly stopped believing they needed her for that?"
Edmund stared at him for several seconds. "You’re insane."
Leofric looked at him in disbelief, then pointed at Primrose. "I’m insane? What about her?"
Primrose pressed her lips into a thin line and looked away.
Edmund immediately walked in front of Primrose, blocking Leofric’s view of her. "She wasn’t in her right mind at that time, and it wasn’t entirely her fault."
The frown on Leofric’s forehead deepened. At that moment, he knew that even if Primrose committed cannibalism, Edmund would probably find a way to defend her.
Therefore, he didn’t want to continue discussing it. "Right. I’m insane! I’m insane, indeed!"
After a while, Lorelle finally spoke again, "And the Moon Goddess agreed to your bargain?"
"Of course not. She ignored me," Leofric said, sounding offended even now. "She apparently thought I was only making empty threats."
Primrose slowly moved her head to the side. "So what did you do?"
Leofric gave her a look that made Edmund immediately suspicious. "I proved that I wasn’t making empty threats."
Edmund narrowed his eyes. "What did you do, Leofric?"
"Nothing terrible," Leofric replied casually. "I simply found a small village where a werewolves pack lived peacefully together. They had a few temples dedicated to the Moon Goddess, so I burned them down."
"You burned down her temples?" Edmund finally asked.
"Only a few of them," Leofric quickly corrected her. "And I made sure nobody was inside before I burned them. I wasn’t trying to kill anyone!"
"That doesn’t make it normal," Edmund said.
"I never claimed it was normal." Leofric shrugged. "I was conducting an experiment."
Lorelle’s expression became even stranger. "What kind of experiment requires you to burn down temples?"
"The kind that proves a Goddess isn’t as necessary as her followers believe." Leofric walked back toward the couch and sat down again before continuing his explanation.
"The Moon Goddess has always been important to werewolves and lycans because they believe she is the one who decides their mates. They pray to her, worship her, and trust that whoever she chooses for them must be the person they are supposed to spend their lives with."
Primrose nodded slowly. She had already learned enough about werewolf and lycan traditions to understand how important the mate bond was to them.
"So I started asking the werewolves in that village a simple question," Leofric continued. "Why did they need a Goddess to tell them who they should love?"
"I told them they could choose for themselves," Leofric said. "If they loved someone and wanted to spend their lives with that person, why should they wait for the Moon Goddess to give them permission? Why should a mate bond decide everything for them?"
"And they listened to you?" Lorelle asked.
"Not immediately," Leofric admitted. "Most of them thought I was insane at first."
Edmund gave him a flat look. "I wonder why."
