The Max Level Hero Has Returned!
Chapter 1480
As Davey leaned against the balcony and gazed out over the city, Illyna walked up beside him. She asked, “What’s on your mind?”
Gently touching a strand of hair fluttering in the night breeze, she nestled close to him. Seeing her look up made him recall just how unusually petite she was. The fact that someone so small was a powerhouse who could casually swing a longsword as large as her own body made for quite the contrast.
“Something I wasn't thinking about popped into my head, and now my head aches,” he told her.
“Did something happen?”
Davey chuckled at her worried expression. “Desiree growing inside there.”
“Hmm?”
“Do you think it’ll be a human, or a demigod?”
Considering his question, Illyna made an odd expression, then soon frowned.
“Hey! Now you've got me wondering about it too!” She playfully slapped his shoulder and whined, but it didn't last long. “What does it matter if it's human, a demigod, or even half-human?”
She seemed delighted and snuggled into his arms. Then, with a bright smile, she looked up at him. “You’re here, I’m here, and our youngest is growing inside here. That alone already makes me so incredibly happy.”
Davey made a slightly surprised expression at her blissful smile.
Clinging to him, she wrapped her arms around his neck and chuckled softly. Her happy voice told him, without a trace of falsehood, “You’re the greatest luck of my life.”
Hearing her voice, Davey could feel that she was completely satisfied with her current life. He then let out a chuckle and said, “But will it be a demigod or human though?”
“Oh, come on!!”
Once he bothered with something, sinking his teeth in, it wasn’t easy to get it out of his head.
“But what do you think happened?”
“What do you mean?”
“You know, the incident that happened at the restaurant.”
Immediately taking action whenever someone collapsed was practically an occupational habit for him.
At the restaurant, a man who looked like an employee had fallen over while carrying food.
“On the surface, he looked overworked, but when I briefly glanced at him, he didn't show any symptoms.”
She was surprised to hear that. “Huh? Then what do you think actually happened?”
“Beats me. Maybe he went through something that caused him extreme acute stress.”
Seeing Davey’s gentle smile, Illyna’s eyes narrowed. “Davey, what do you think will happen if a member of an imperial family shows up at a regular knight order?”
“What else could happen? It’d be chaos.”
“Right? I know they usually get a heads-up a few days in advance. So, what do the knights do then?”
“The squires and knights, without exception, would start with cleanup and work themselves to death, don’t you think?”
“I agree. Perhaps that’s the reason why?”
Indeed, the guests visiting the hotel weren't only those from Tionis. With Al Hajat, whose mere presence could make headlines, staying at the hotel, it would’ve had to make extensive preparations on short notice, carefully checking every last detail to take full advantage of the publicity.
“But... it does feel a little strange,” she mumbled.
“Don't worry about it,” he told her. “I’m aware it’s hard work, but we are paying the price to stay at this hotel.”
In fact, Davey pulled out his smartphone to check, and the hotel's stock price was already showing signs of skyrocketing. Putting aside the small details, they had certainly pulled off the publicity stunt flawlessly.
Just then.
WEE-WOO! WEE-WOO!
An ambulance siren blared loudly.
“That...”
“Looks like it wasn’t just simple overwork, huh?”
“Are you going to check it out?”
“Yeah, I’ll just take a quick look.”
Davey jumped down from the considerably tall building without hesitation, and Illyna looked down as he descended. Then, as if she had made up her mind about something, she smiled faintly and waved her hand.
Whoosh!!
When Davey suddenly descended to the ground, people around gasped in surprise.
“S-Sir! You just jumped down from up there?”
“No problem, don't worry,” Davey responded with a wave of his hand. “More importantly, what happened?”
“Ah. It’s nothing major, really. We apologize for the inconvenience...”
“I didn't come here to file a complaint about inconvenience,” he calmly told the employee.
Soon, the young man came into view while being carried out on a portable stretcher.
He was having a seizure, his hands and feet trembling slightly. Bloody foam was coming out of his mouth, and a strange odor spread from him.
It smelled like stale seawater.
‘Cardiac arrest?’
Davey saw a paramedic performing CPR while straddling the young man on the bed, but then blocked their path.
One of the paramedics shouted, “Sir!!! What are you doing?! This is a critical patient! Please move!!”
Despite the warning, he didn't move. He reached out to open the patient's closed eyes and checked his pupils.
“What in the world do you think you’re doing right now?!”
The fact that the paramedic was angry despite knowing that Davey possessed exceptional medical skills and was a saint showed just how seriously he took his duty. Of course, Davey wouldn't normally interfere, but he knew there were times when interventions were necessary.
“If you transport this patient like this, he will die. Stop immediately.”
“What...? Who are you to say such a thing?!” The paramedic, who had been shouting angrily at him, flinched and just stared at him once he realized who he was talking to. “Ah.”
Ignoring him, Davey immediately pulled back the sheet covering the patient, then sliced his dress shirt open with the aura gathered at his fingertips. As the moderately muscular upper body was revealed, he immediately gathered a pure white light at his fingertips and held it over various spots on the patient's chest.
The patient, who had been quiet, started having a seizure again. The paramedics, unable to move and frozen with tense expressions, seemed to decide they couldn’t delay any longer.
“Please move first! An unqualified person arbitrarily giving treatment is...”
Ignoring his words once again, Davey immediately placed his hand over the patient's chest and generated a large number of sparks at his fingertips.
BZZZT!!!
Once that happened, the patient’s seizing body instantly stilled. Everyone around looked at Davey with shocked expressions.
Outwardly, it looked like he had just electrocuted and killed the young man. Regardless, he slowly moved his index and middle fingers placed on the patient’s chest and then created sparks once more.
Then, something astonishing happened. The young man, who had been spitting bloody foam and dying just moments before, started coughing violently.
“Hmph?!”
The paramedic, who had been desperately performing CPR because the patient’s heart had stopped, stared blankly as they coughed and began to regain consciousness.
“The emergency measure’s complete,” Davey coolly declared. “He should be fine now.”
“What did you just do...”
“A simple emergency procedure.”
The paramedics were stunned for a moment, then flinched at the patient’s groan. The young man began, “W-Where am I...”
“Sir, how are you feeling?”
“Ugh. My whole body feels hot.”
“We’ll transport him immediately.”
Following a nod from the paramedic, others loaded the patient into the ambulance. The paramedic then turned to Davey.
“Well... this shouldn't happen normally, but...” He bowed his head slightly. “Thank you.”
“I briefly checked, and the patient is suffering from an extreme vitamin deficiency. Please tell the doctors it’d be good to check for that and administer treatment.”
The paramedic nodded at his words and quickly hopped on the ambulance.
Davey felt like someone was taking a picture of him amidst the chaos, but he paid it no mind. Task finished, he lightly pushed off the ground and flew back to his room.
Illyna nestled into his arms, smiling faintly. “Whose husband is so cool?”
“Why are you acting all cheesy?”
“Baby, your daddy just saved a person. Aren’t you proud?”
Davey let out a slightly awkward laugh seeing her looking happy and rubbing her belly. “Enough of that. Shall we play a game today?”
Originally, others were supposed to join them, but Perserque had stepped out, telling them to spend the day alone, so it was just Illyna and Davey together.
He pulled a portable game console from his Pocket Plane and handed a controller to her.
With sparkling eyes, she said, “Davey.”
“Yeah?”
“You suck at this.”
The game he loaded was a racing game they had both played before. In fact, they had played a total of a hundred and twenty-one matches together. His record was a hundred and twenty wins and one loss. Her record was a hundred and twenty losses and one win.
One time Davey threw a match because he felt sorry for Illyna, who was absolutely furious and slammed the controller because she couldn't win, and it caused quite the mess.
She mocked, “I don’t play games with people who suck...”
“Want to hurry up before we do some real-life racing?”
“Alright, alright. Okay then, I’ll play with you if you say ‘I know I'm a scrub, but please play one match with me.’ Say that I’m a master at this game, too!”
“I’m really gonna spank you to death.”
Davey tossed the game console aside, grabbed Illyna, and threw her onto the bed. He then tickled her relentlessly, making her burst into laughter and wriggle. He didn't let her go for a long time, tickling her until she was completely exhausted and tears streamed down her face before finally releasing her.
* * *
The hotel employee to whom Davey had given emergency treatment ultimately survived. He was later informed by the manager that it would’ve been a big problem if he had been even a little later, and that they were truly grateful to him for saving their employee.
For some reason, the incident garnered enough attention to be featured prominently in the news. It wasn’t because the Saint of Tionis saved a person. Nor was it because the young man who suffered a seizure and cardiac arrest miraculously survived. It was because of the cause of his seizure.
[A special seizure symptom that affects Awakened individuals. The sole survivor has appeared.]
The headline itself was quite simple. It seemed the young man Davey saved yesterday was an Awakened. However, the problem was that a mysterious illness causing seizures had recently begun spreading among the Awakened community.
It was a terrifying disease that caused extreme fatigue before eventually triggering seizures that killed its victims on the spot.
Given that it was a disease related to mana, and because so few people had been affected, no proper countermeasures had been developed. Yet, thanks to Davey, a sole survivor had appeared.
It was an incident Davey hadn’t heard about before, and it became a sensational piece of news once it was reported.
“Ahem, isn’t my dad great?”
[Huh? I know what he did was amazing, but why does seeing boss act like that piss me off so much?]
[LMAO look at her acting all high and mighty]
[But did he really cure the Awakened disease? They say it's incurable, and the best-case scenario is still losing your Awakened abilities. Worst case, you die on the spot.]
“The Awakened disease... isn’t that the one that killed the S-Class hunter from Ukraine recently?”
[Yup yup.]
[It was causing an uproar worldwide since even though the infection rate was low, getting it basically meant certain death. But now there's actually a survivor?]
[I’m a doctor at a hospital that works with that disease, and the treating physician said that patient would’ve died if it weren't for the Saint of Tionis.]
Evangeline wondered aloud, “What did dad do to save a patient with an incurable disease in such a short time?”
[Why are you asking us LOL]
[We just watch streams in our rooms, we don’t know that stuff!]
[GEEZ!!! STOP THE FUCKING AOE ATTACKS!!!]
“Ahem, please refrain from using harsh language. Also, Dad doesn’t really like this kind of attention,” she muttered gloomily.
[??? What doesn't he like about it?]
“He doesn’t like getting all this attention just for saving people with his medical knowledge. He says if there’s a patient in front of him, he just saves them, and he doesn’t really like making a big fuss about those kinds of things.”
In fact, Davey had already dealt with a few cases like that. It simply hadn't been made public because he didn't like making a fuss about such things.
[Still, what he did was amazing. He saved a life.]
[Honestly hella cool.]
[I was at that hotel too, and honestly, it was incredible.]
Seeing the chat praise her father, Evangeline herself felt embarrassed. “Ugh. Why am I getting all flushed...”
[LOLOL I totally get that feeling.]
[LOLS]
Evangeline shook her head, looking at the chat filled with laughter.
[Does this mean he found the cure? Does this mean we can stop Awakened individuals from dying pointlessly now?]
“Perhaps? I’m not sure. We can’t really know yet.”
It had been a simple coincidence, but the fact that Davey had saved someone with an incurable disease made for quite the story.
However.
[But did you know there are more people getting infected? It's a relief that someone who can cure it showed up now. Experts say that if things get really bad, it might cause a massive disaster among the Awakened.]
[Are you an expert or something? Why are you acting like you know everything?]
[I AM an expert. That's why I'm acting like I know everything.]
[Sorry.]
Evangeline wore a subtle expression while reading the chat. She realized again how embarrassing it was to see people keep seeing messages in the chat praising her father.
Just then, a chat message caught her attention.
[Boss. It looks like a massive outbreak of the Awakened disease happened in South Africa.]
